32 Seemingly Normal Things About American Schools That Confuse The Hell Out Of Non-Americans

Some of the questions were odd even to me in the UK. In most instances, in many countries, we all have various versions of similar things. Pools in some schools, water fountains in some, after school activities are common place (but not called clubs), ditto lockers. The only thing that stuck out for me was the time of day lessons started and that has pros and cons. Younger children are (usually) naturally earlier risers but there are studies that show older children benefit from later starts. I like hearing how other countries do things but I'd really like another country to take a turn. Bored Panda - why not take the focus OFF the US, just for a moment, and pick countries that are less known and maybe we can share info from them?

I still don't get this ... and the entire misconception about freedom. The absence of rules is not equal to maximized freedom, but in reality translates into the right of the stronger. If companies don't have to obey rules regarding how to treat their employees, these employees are free to be disposed of pretty quick. If you have to worry about being broke for the rest of your life because you got sick, you are not free to decide what you do. A lot of similar things come to my mind - I don't get why a company spying on me isn't any of a severe issue, but the state doing so is ... I dislike both ways (and avoid them as far as I can) ... the american definition of freedom is pretty much effed up, and this is one of the worst outcomes of it - you're not free if you have to pay a year's salary each year to go to university, you don't decide what to do then, and a lot of talent is wasted because of this - and a lot of people are made unhappy for decades to come by this shitty system...

I never understood why Americans let this and things like medical care be taken on them. Just because they fear socialism, which they often mistakenly equate with communism. Whereby "the Americans" is of course a generalization. Of course, education and medicine are also available in e.g. Europe not for nothing. But everyone supports it. That is not socialism but maximally social. Above all, it is no bit more social when you let people who want a basic education go into life with horrendous debts. Where I come from, that's called anti-social. But somehow it doesn't seem to bother anyone. I always see that every American complains about it, but nothing has changed about it for decades. Education, like medicine, should be a universal human right and not reserved for those who can afford it or who are willing to plunge into debt. And yes, that is socialism. But is it so wrong?

And you wonder why Communism is rearing its ugly head here. I could get in a lot of trouble if I wrote here what should be done to those vile scumwad CEOs who take the money and run, who get the gold mine while the rank-and-file workers - who made their obscene fortunes possible - get the shaft.

This is ridiculous. People have to line up at food banks and the guys that drove their companies out of business are paid ridiculous amounts of money. Pisses me off. And as for the last comment, boomers do not wonder why the youth are open to socialism... we all get it and a huge group of us would love to see social reform. (Sorry, I'm tired of the boomer's are stupid comments.)

these are so relatable! worked in customer services a few years and could write a book about entitled people. Had a woman throw her (stoneware) cup of coffee at me once because I refused to refund her 10 year old lamp which wasn't even bought at our store. We went on holiday for the first time with our eldest daughter. She was 11 months at the time, so the car was pretty full of babystuff. About 2 miles from our destonation car broke down (weel axel broke) and we ended up pushing the car to the holiday park. I tore my jeans doing so and we had no means to get a new pair, since our car broke down and nearest town was miles away. Awesome holiday though - got to do absolutely nothing and wearing only pyjamas for the week.

Not sure I agree here. I am a parent and I love being a parent, but I do not in anyway judge people that choose not to have children. That is nobodys choice but their own. And I hate it either way when people look down or someone elses lige choices. Mind your own business. My friendgroup is equally divided between people with and people without kids and having kids or not is actually never a topic of discussion. I can relate though to your last sentence, there are things you can't do or do less of when you have kids - like going clubbing or traveling. On the other hand I can as an adult totally legitimately spend the entire day building cushion forts or sandcastles. Gotta love that.
