Australian Traveler Went To The US & Documented American Food

People tend to say that there’s no arguing about food. Everyone has different tastes and the world offers something for everyone’s needs. But when it comes to the best food, going to the US probably wouldn’t cross everyone’s minds as the country is most commonly known for its junk food. But this Australian girl documented her food journey in the US so well, it will make anyone fall in love and maybe even melt some of the hearts of those despising junk food at least a little bit.

More info: katykatycake

After traveling for 16 hours from Queensland, Australia to San Francisco, starting her trip with an In-N-Out burger felt like just the right thing to do. Double-Double with animal sauce. Luckily, it was all worth the hassle as the Aussie commented that she “would fly 16 hours again for this burger”.

Despite having Krispy Kreme in Australia, she paid a visit to them in the US as well and did not regret it even one bit. “Gosh, they’re better here,” she said. “Selected was an original glaze, followed by a second original glaze.”

She felt it was worth throwing in a pic of herself enjoying a donut just to prove how good they actually were.

Not everything was so delicious though. “McDonalds McGriddle. Only thing at American McDonalds that we don’t have back home. Probably won’t miss it either.”

“Clam chowder from Boudin. Holy smokes this was a good lunch.”

“Garlic bread from Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in little Italy SF. This was good but the pizza to follow was the best.”

“Pizza at Tony’s. Something sausage. Yes, I love pizza. Yes, the reason I went to America was to eat Pizza. Yes, this was an excellent pizza.”

“The Tony’s Margarita. Could be the best pizza I’ve ever eaten? Definitely the best Margarita.”

“Breakfast at Boudin. Nothing special but who knew Watermelon juice could be so good.”

“Fresh produce at Market somewhere in SF. Strawberries were excellent. Did not try Brussel Sprouts but I’m sure they were good too.”

“Excellent Mexican in Sausalito. Almost fell asleep into my Taco due to jet lag.”

“Crab at pier 39. Not bad but Australia has some of the best seafood I’ve tasted so the benchmark was set high on this one.”

“Gyros for lunch in Redwood City. 10/10 would recommend.”

“Gosh, America has the most exciting supermarkets I’ve ever seen. Flaming hot Cheetos are the hero in this photo. Bananas in the back for scale.”

She was also beyond excited about those cute Chinese takeaway boxes: “chinese from Uber eats. It was delicious and came in the first little Chinese takeaway boxes I’ve eaten from. More excited about this than I should have been. Also, coffee mate in the background, how am I going to live without you at the end of this trip?”

“Ok, I’ve read a lot of memes about Chipotle. Was expecting it to be good. Was not disappointed. Super tender beef. Delicious.”

“Lunch from Wholefoods. An incredible selection of delicious take-away food here. Catch up Australia, this place is too good.”

“Trader Joes. Oh lord, I’m probably going to have to relocate now I’ve discovered Trader Joes. Halloween Joe Joes are my new favorite.”

“Heard great things about Five Guys. Chocolate malt shake is the best I’ve ever had. Burger for me was insane. So much flavor.”

“Hands down, the best pie I’ve ever eaten. Golden Boy pepperoni. I’ll dream about this pizza in the future.”

“Couldn’t leave [Golden Boy] without trying the cheese. Lightweight, though I had to share my slice as I was too full.”

“Fortune cookies from Chinatown. Accidentally bought the ‘Adult’ version. That was some interesting reading.”

“First time trying biscuits and gravy. This was a roadside diner on the way to Yosemite. Couldn’t finish, I let the waitress down.”

“The same diner. Shared plates so this gets a mention too. This whipped butter is absolutely delicious.”

“First dinner in Yosemite. Pretty good pizza. Will work off the next day with a hike. Or maybe just skip hike and go eat more pizza.”

She was hoping to have some lefovers from those Yosemite pizzas to attract raccoons. Sadly, it did not work quite as planned: “No leftovers. Probably why I didn’t see a Raccoon.”

“Bears are a rare sighting apparently so I brought the bear to us.”

“Roast pork with green beans and mash. Biggest serving I’ve had yet in the USA, I ate all of it.”

“In Australia, we call this a Cinnamon Scroll. Was corrected when asked for one and told it was a Cinnamon Roll. I could have eaten 3 more of this delicious scroll/roll.”

“Every one prepared me for American coffee being the worst. Drip coffee is now life. Oh, and the Peets Pumpkin Lattes are also pretty good.”

Another example of those amazing Yosemite pizzas before it got destroyed.

“My first USA pie. Pumpkin and Cherry. I’m filling my suitcase with puréed pumpkin just so I can recreate this back home.”

“First dinner in Las Vegas. Hells Kitchen scallops. Did not see Gordon but the head chef shouts at everyone in the kitchen so it’s just like he’s there really.”

“Beef Wellington at Hell’s Kitchen. My first wellie ever. Bar set high.”

“Sticky date pudding also at Hell’s Kitchen. Holy smokes, I didn’t talk the entire time I ate this. That’s how good it was.”

“Chop Salad somewhere in Vegas. You should go. It was great. Also first corn bread tasting.”

“Buffet at Bellagio. I went just for the melted butter in a bowl. Also tried crawfish boil for the first time. So many firsts.”

“Dessert from the buffet at The Cosmopolitan Hotel Vegas. Yes, this was all for me. We were the very last ones in the buffet. The restaurant was packed up around us. I paid for unlimited drinks and desserts, I wanted my money’s worth. Left drunk and on a massive sugar high.”

“Breakfast donut from District Donut at The Cosmopolitan. Stay at this hotel. Order thiS breakfast. Don’t forget the glazed and cinnamon donuts as shown in the background.”

“Mexican from Santa Monica pier. The host was very nice, gave us the best table with a view of the sunset. A customer at another table shouted at the host and said he wanted our table. The cranky guy left hungry. Sad for him, the food and sunset were equally good.”

“Fresh lemonade with mint. Refreshing and also made me feel like a Californian sipping this on my bike while riding along Santa Monica.”

“Ruben sandwich from an Italian deli in Santa Monica. Waiting in line 20 minutes for this sandwich. Worth it.”

“Chicken in downtown LA. Why oh why does nothing in Australia come with a side of pickles?”

“Pizza in downtown LA. This was washed down with three tropical-flavored beers. Lychee, pineapple and I forget the third. I won’t easily forget the pizza though.”

“Giant donuts in Springfield at Universal studios. If ever a banana was required for scale it was here.”

“First ever Chick-fil-A. Will make it life’s mission to ensure it’s not my last. Hands down, America you win at fast food. This was an absolute highlight lunch. Those waffle fries, catch up Australia!!!”

“Pumpkin juice at Universal. Only beaten by the chilled Butterbeer. I was a proud Gryffindor standing in Diagon Alley drinking this.”

“Spaghetti Vongole at Ace hotel, down town LA. Thumbs up.”

“Could not leave the Golden State without going on on a bang.. double-double with animal sauce. I’ll miss you In-N-out burger”

I think one of the things that I do like about my country (U.S) is that you have the option to try traditional foods from other countries all around the world. There are small family owned restaurants that bring in culture directly into the food and I god damn love it. Only problem is that ingredients here create relatively REALLY good tasting food because of additives that are normally illegal in other countries and not in the U.S. It's why the obesity rate is larger here than anywhere else. Not only do we not have time to make ourselves home cooked meals, but they add additives to make you want to eat more. It's an endless cycle. Still... we got some good a** grilled cheese sandwiches and quesedillas, highly recommend if you get them from the right place.

Yeah, and every part of america has their own food from other countries, like farming communities are going to have damn good Mexican food because of workers coming from there. In Seattle, we have really good Vietnamese and Teriyaki.

I’ve traveled to the US and this post just seems to focus on typical “comfort” food and junk. I see hardly any evidence of regional dishes. This is in no way a representation of food in the US. This would be like someone traveling to where I’m from and taking pictures of Irn Bru, deep fried mars bars, and neeps and tatties. America has so many amazing food influences from different cultures from around the word. This post is nothing but a stereotype

interesting article about food culture. for my taste, it would be way too much burger & pizza (fat/salt/meat), and seeing, how food is served there in some places (cardboard/plastic), i feel like a "food-snob" with our habits over here in europe, although its very average to eat from porcelaine / simple stoneware at home or at restaurants here. if i stayed in the u.s, i opt for regional dishes with traditional / indian influences or from immigrants-culture.

And now Australians know why we Americans struggle with our weight. Fantastic food - even the fast food - and most of it reasonably priced. And all deliverable thanks to Uber Eats. No In-N-Out here on the east coast. Maybe someday. But even our small mom-and-pop restaurants are amazing.

She did go for the "stereo type" food and in no where did she say that its all you get. As a non american who would want to visit america just so i can eat how she did, i totally get it! This is all the stuff we hear and see and we wanna experience it too. I dont think she meant to trash it and she did seem to have activities planned to burn all that, plus its holiday eating! Let the girl live!

Mario Batali once said there’s no such thing as Italian food - it’s all about regions. I’m not sure how you’d define “American food” for much the same reason. There’s Louisiana Creole and Cajun, African American-influenced southern fare, the seafood stews of the east coast (clam chowder) and SF Bay area (chioppino), roast turkey, distinct pit BBQ styles of Memphis, Kansas City, Texas.… the list goes on. Not to mention the variety of dishes made from fruits and vegetables native to America (blueberries, avocados, pumpkin, cranberries, peppers, corn, potatoes, tomatoes). The idea that American cuisine consists of nothing but hot dogs and McDonalds is such a cliché, and ridiculously naive. There are certainly local spins on existing dishes (e.g., Chicago deep dish pizza), but there’s also quite a bit of unique fare that originated here you can’t get anywhere else. Only bad versions of it.

For those (fellow Americans) complaining: Think about a country that you want to visit, and the food that you know of there. Don't you want to make a beeline for those? Most Americans visiting Italy want to head straight for the pizza and pasta dishes, in France, they head for the stereotypical French dishes, visiting Japan they want the sushi. The aforementioned countries all include dozens upon dozens of local dishes that are great, but that most Americans may not have heard of. Same goes with this Australian woman: She wanted to eat from the places she's heard about in the U.S. that are not available in Australia. It also looks like she had an itinerary that was predominantly on the West Coast, hitting only the major cities/sites. As a West Coaster myself, I know that the spots where tourists tend to stay are stacked with blocks and blocks of trendy/stereotypical foods and it's just easily accessible.

They must taste better than they look, because they don't look very appetising. Australia has some of the best chefs, ingredients and authentic dining experiences in the world. Seems silly to go to America for a food trip. I do like their southern cuisine though. My theory is the further south you go, the better the food gets.....cross the border if you want the real tasty stuff.

interesting article about food culture. for my taste, it would be way too much burger & pizza (fat/salt/meat), and seeing, how food is served there in some places (cardboard/plastic), i feel like a "food-snob" with our habits over here in europe, although its very average to eat from porcelaine / simple stoneware at home or at restaurants here. if i stayed in the u.s, i opt for regional dishes with traditional / indian influences or from immigrants-culture.

Pretty much all of these foods are available in Australia, and Thailand, and Argentina...and most countries in the world nowadays. I don't see what was of value about this post. Just seems like someone's random instagram food photos.

I love going to US for food, it's like 70% the reason for my travels)) I usually start eating after the plane lands and stop at the gate on the way back)) So many things to try, I just love all the different cuisines. The only thing I wasn't impressed by was store-bought candy.

Again, this is not how most of us eat on the daily. This is a lady's vacation blog, not a typical American diet.

The clam thing in bread looked appealing, as did strawberries and seafood. The rest seems to be overloaded with fats and/or sugar. I may be wrong but that's what it looks to me.

All I can see, is food from other countries (Italian, Greek, Chinese, French, English,...) , and burgers, donuts, and pumpkin... That is hopefully not American food.
