"This land is cursed; the animals hop not run, birds run, not fly and the swans are black not white. This land is cursed and I'll have nothing more to do with it," wrote William Dampier, one of the first Europeans to ever explore the continent of Australia, back in 1688.

In case you didn't know, 26 January is the national day of Australia. And what could be a more beautiful way to celebrate the occasion than by honoring all the little things that make this country the beautiful, interesting and absolutely bizarre place that it is. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of our favorite photos shared by people on the interwebs proving that Australia isn't just another country, but a whole different world. As per usual, don't forget to leave a comment here and there and vote for your favorite pics!

As it should be, cigarettes need to be prohibitively expensive and the tax on them to treating smokers for both their addiction and the illnesses they cause.

It is lovely. However, I'm not sure why you decided picking it up was the right thing to do.

Stop touching animal eggs and put it back. Mother might reject it if it smells like human.

F a l s e, birds don’t have the greatest sense of smell, nor would they really care what the baby smells like.

There seems to be something of an optical illusion going on here, because when I stare at that photo on my iPad the egg seems to wiggle around ever so slightly. I suspect it has to do with the contrast of the textured surface. That effect might not show up on a phone if the image is smaller. (No, I haven’t been drinking 😉).

If you etch into the egg, it's a gorgeous green-blue all the way through the shell. Google carved emu eggs.

Lost count how many tourists I told not to drive after dark in the outback. Kangaroos love sitting on the warm bitumen at night. And are dumb as a thick plank.
