"This land is cursed; the animals hop not run, birds run, not fly and the swans are black not white. This land is cursed and I'll have nothing more to do with it," wrote William Dampier, one of the first Europeans to ever explore the continent of Australia, back in 1688.

In case you didn't know, 26 January is the national day of Australia. And what could be a more beautiful way to celebrate the occasion than by honoring all the little things that make this country the beautiful, interesting and absolutely bizarre place that it is. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of our favorite photos shared by people on the interwebs proving that Australia isn't just another country, but a whole different world. As per usual, don't forget to leave a comment here and there and vote for your favorite pics!

As it should be, cigarettes need to be prohibitively expensive and the tax on them to treating smokers for both their addiction and the illnesses they cause.

What a big beautiful stick insect she is! 😍 I'm a kid who grew up in rural QLD, I remember when I was six I went to Sydney to visit family and my parents took me to one the city's museums. They had a tank full of stick insects and you could hold them, I was the only kid who would hold one, all the other kids there screamed and ran away. I have a great photo of me with a huge smile on my face holding a Sticky as big as this. How all these city slickers are scared of harmless bugs like these guys is beyond me.

I think it's just the size that freaks people out. They are indeed beautiful. The kid doesn't seem too bothered - there was time for a photo!

It is scenes like this that make me never want to visit Australia without someone following me around, and making sure that creatures such as this, and gigantic spiders, stay at least ten feet away from me.

Won’t work. Sadly I think only a 50 BMG would work. So take it out and accept that it was a fun child while it lasted.

Cute, doesn't eat much, that is only half the size of one we found when we first moved to Queensland. The next morning we found a Super Sized Mozzie, big enough to take on any cane toad,

This is just a stick insect, not dangerous! I think it might be a goliath stick insect (Eurycnema goliath). They're gentle giants. There are really a lot of different types of stick insects that look very different from the typical stick insect most people know, but all of them are pretty harmless.

Lost count how many tourists I told not to drive after dark in the outback. Kangaroos love sitting on the warm bitumen at night. And are dumb as a thick plank.
