"This land is cursed; the animals hop not run, birds run, not fly and the swans are black not white. This land is cursed and I'll have nothing more to do with it," wrote William Dampier, one of the first Europeans to ever explore the continent of Australia, back in 1688.

In case you didn't know, 26 January is the national day of Australia. And what could be a more beautiful way to celebrate the occasion than by honoring all the little things that make this country the beautiful, interesting and absolutely bizarre place that it is. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of our favorite photos shared by people on the interwebs proving that Australia isn't just another country, but a whole different world. As per usual, don't forget to leave a comment here and there and vote for your favorite pics!

As it should be, cigarettes need to be prohibitively expensive and the tax on them to treating smokers for both their addiction and the illnesses they cause.

Goannas are related to monitor lizards. Not quite as big, but still mean as s**t if they want to be.

Unlikely, this one ran away soon after the photo was taken. They rarely attack and the thing you need to worry about mainly is their bite. There saliva is full of so much bad bacteria that it can be deadly.

As scary as that is, I'd rather a giant ass lizard than a spider. I mean yeah this thing could break in my house and make dinner for itself but still......rather the lizard

Lost count how many tourists I told not to drive after dark in the outback. Kangaroos love sitting on the warm bitumen at night. And are dumb as a thick plank.
