I had a monitor running at me once, think it mistook me for a tree. Fortunately, someone intervene and scared it off. I was running as fast as I could, swearing a few words as I went. Pretty scary at the time (couldn't imagine the damage the claws can do as they climb you) but funny now.

It's a goanna, and totally harmless to you if you don't try to grab it with your bare hands, then it will give you a very nasty bite which will become infected. It eats small birds, eggs, mice - whatever.

Why is it that in the follow on piece they're talking about Deaths by venemous snakes and yes there are approx 2-4 each year but Then they talk about the approx 11,000 that are killed in Asia each year. It's a Goanna. Sort of similar to an Asian Monitor Lizard. They only grow to be about 1.5 meters. Nothing. And there claws can be about 3 inches long. Fine. Cute little things. We don't do s**t lightly here in the land of Aus.

It might come as a surprise, but Australia’s deadliest animal isn't one of its many venomous creatures. Forget the spine-chilling spiders or the fearsome crocodile. According to the NCIS (National Coronial Information System), the title of Australia’s deadliest animal goes to a far more familiar creature: the horse.
In the wild and rugged landscapes of Australia, where one might expect the most danger to come from its notorious wildlife, it’s actually horses, ponies, and donkeys that pose the greatest risk. From 2001 to 2017, horses have been responsible for the highest number of animal-related deaths in Australia, with 172 fatalities, mostly due to falls.
Cows and other bovine animals also rank high on the list, with 82 reported deaths for the same period of time, mainly through accidents rather than direct attacks. Even our loyal companions, dogs, hold a surprising rank as the third leading cause of animal-related fatalities, responsible for 53 deaths. Most victims were children and elderly people.

Yes... I love my country....But it all depends on where you live as to what kinds of danger you may be in and what you may see. For instance, I come from North Queensland in the tropics where jellyfish stings and crocodiles are just something you have to be aware of in your life. I have lived in the bush of rural New South Wales and dealt with a lot of different animals including venomous Red Bellied Blacks (we regularly saw about 5-6 snakes) whom we really appreciated as they keep down populations of pest animals and are quite docile. Living in cities you may never see more than a couple of Daddy Long Legs and some geckos.... Great place...

In rural Australia ,where I live ,the rule of thumb,don't leave shoes,bags etc outside,check under toilet seats (and inside toilet roles :/) be aware of your surroundings(we have many venomous snakes on our property ,but you rarely see them.I think it's odd that the article didn't mention Redback Spiders , Wolf Spiders,Whitetail Spiders(all venomous),Fire Ants,Jumping Jack ants,Bull ants (very nasty stings form all of them) or Brown Snakes or Taipans both large, fast-moving, highly venomous snakes or even the Red Bellied Black ,venomous but quite shy and usually only bites when stepped on. Summer is the worst for ALL these. things ,except roos they are always about.We have bloody great eagles as well.Be respectful most creatures and they will leave you alone ...Except spiders ,they are big and terriying ,run away! Whoever wrote this article is an idiot - why do they keep saying "poisonous" when they mean "venomous"? They're two completely different things
When another animal (birds for example) eat a poisonous snake, they die. If the snake was quick and bit the bird then the bird dies from the venom. So when the author used both poisonous and venomous in the same sentence they are referring to both. Also educated Aussies understand the difference of both words and will use the correct word in a description.

I do really think that Australia is a YES COUNTRY .. For me is the only country that can really cohabit with animals .. They learn how to live with everything that moves .and respect their environment .That is incredible , and believe me i´m scare of spiders and another bugs .. I live in the pacific nw...it is an area with only garter snakes. I am afraid of snakes and see them often. It is my super power to hear or see them (yes hear them, on more than one occasion I have said "i hear something in the grass' and moments later i have spotted the tiny snake.)

I would love to visit Australia but the only thing that scares me about AUS are the creepy stories I have listened to on YouTube. The absolute lack of internet, long stretches of highway with no town in sight, gas stations or some locals/transplants directing you down deserted roads at night into nowhere land. The rest are fine by me, I love spiders, snakes and bats. Though I live in Texas and we have our fair share of dangerous/venomous creatures, various rattlesnake/copperhead snakes, scorpions, brown recluse spider and wild boar/hogs. I live in a tiny town and decent sized spiders come inside (esp in summer...and I'm a lil arachnophobic). At my Nan's farm there was a huge diamond python that lived in the hay shed (8ft long...not sure what that is in metres) and you'd find his skin every now and then (in the shed of around the branches of a huge pine tree. Dad used it to play a practical joke with the skin until Nan told him to get rid of it or she'd kill him lol. Not sure what happened to the snake. Ticks (paralysis) were worse than the snakes out there tho

How did I not see any of this stuff when I was there? I was in Queensland, on the coast and in the interior, and all over New South Wales. Are the scary beasties all up near Darwin or something? Is it because I was there in the winter? 2 and half months, and all I saw were a couple of roos that were ~50 yards away, an emu, and a lot of galahs.
Honestly I don't know how this happens....people must leave their houses wide open and live out in the middle of the bush to get these kinds of animals in their houses...

A lot of countries culls wildlife for farming, just have a look at the US for example, not just for farming but also for housing, mining, and other infrastructure. The US exports more live stock/animals than Australia does, in 2013 Aus exported 3,160,610, whilst the US exported 94,775,607. Also look at the countries where rainforests are being destroyed at alarming rates killing off orangutans and other vulnerable animals etc due to the palm oil industry. Add on the countries that use animals for entertainment in cruel ways like being chained up, beaten, starved etc. Look at what the US does to its own citizens too with mass shootings almost daily. Might want to do more research before you deem Australia is the second cruelest country. Could we be better, of course we can but so can almost every other country. Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

For instance, I come from North Queensland in the tropics where jellyfish stings and crocodiles are just something you have to be aware of in your life. I have lived in the bush of rural New South Wales and dealt with a lot of different animals including venomous Red Bellied Blacks (we regularly saw about 5-6 snakes) whom we really appreciated as they keep down populations of pest animals and are quite docile. Living in cities you may never see more than a couple of Daddy Long Legs and some geckos.... Great place...

Snakes are (for the most part) VENOMOUS not poisonous. If you bite it and you die, that’s poisonous. If it bites you and you die, that’s venomous.
In rural Australia ,where I live ,the rule of thumb,don't leave shoes,bags etc outside,check under toilet seats (and inside toilet roles :/) be aware of your surroundings(we have many venomous snakes on our property ,but you rarely see them.I think it's odd that the article didn't mention Redback Spiders , Wolf Spiders,Whitetail Spiders(all venomous),Fire Ants,Jumping Jack ants,Bull ants (very nasty stings form all of them) or Brown Snakes or Taipans both large, fast-moving, highly venomous snakes or even the Red Bellied Black ,venomous but quite shy and usually only bites when stepped on. Summer is the worst for ALL these. things ,except roos they are always about.We have bloody great eagles as well.Be respectful most creatures and they will leave you alone ...Except spiders ,they are big and terriying ,run away! Whoever wrote this article is an idiot - why do they keep saying "poisonous" when they mean "venomous"? They're two completely different things
When another animal (birds for example) eat a poisonous snake, they die. If the snake was quick and bit the bird then the bird dies from the venom. So when the author used both poisonous and venomous in the same sentence they are referring to both. Also educated Aussies understand the difference of both words and will use the correct word in a description.

Last year the snake was on the pool slide then another on the road to Grandparents, year before that mum thought we hung a garland on the door. It was NOT a garland. Mum HATES snakes. I do really think that Australia is a YES COUNTRY .. For me is the only country that can really cohabit with animals .. They learn how to live with everything that moves .and respect their environment .That is incredible , and believe me i´m scare of spiders and another bugs .. Australia is a really big example for so many country .. we have so much to learn with animals, and have a lot to learn with us too.. there´s a deep connection between everything that lives .. and we should give sense to that .

I live in the pacific nw...it is an area with only garter snakes. I am afraid of snakes and see them often. It is my super power to hear or see them (yes hear them, on more than one occasion I have said "i hear something in the grass' and moments later i have spotted the tiny snake.)

I would love to visit Australia but the only thing that scares me about AUS are the creepy stories I have listened to on YouTube. The absolute lack of internet, long stretches of highway with no town in sight, gas stations or some locals/transplants directing you down deserted roads at night into nowhere land. The rest are fine by me, I love spiders, snakes and bats.
