The internet is known for its power to unite people by the causes they believe in. The worst part is – some of the causes are borderline ridiculous. One of them is the infamous viral sensation “Storm Area 51 – They Can’t Stop All of Us” which was started on Facebook. The seemingly innocent event intended to be a joke spiraled out of control when 2 million people RSVP’ed and put government officials on their toes.

Ever since it was created on June 27, many of us have wondered what would happen on the designated day – the 20th of September. And the moment of truth has finally arrived! The event is happening and here are the first photos!

This Friday, alien enthusiasts gathered at the heavily guarded entrance of Area 51. The base has been surrounded by many rumors of hiding secrets related to extraterrestrial life. So people were determined to just ‘see them aliens’.

However, those who really hoped for some action will be disappointed. It seems like most of the crowd showed up just to see how the event will unfold, instead of being ready to invade the base.

“They’re just here to see what’s going on. They’re here to have fun,” said Sergeant Orlando Guerra of the Nevada Department of Public Safety Investigation Division.

We are not going to lie, the crowd is probably as odd as the aliens themselves. Covered in tin foil hats and strange attire, these people brought signs demanding the E.T. be freed from the government’s captivity. And of course, there were some who just had to try to go past the gate. However, with the base being loaded with military personnel, their sneaky attempts failed.

However, the event didn’t go without moments that are sure to go down in history. Take a peek at this guy who did a Naruto-run on live news coverage.

In case you don’t remember, it all was started as a joke by a 21-year-old Matty Roberts.

However, once the event got some surprising traction, it suddenly wasn’t funny anymore. Roberts was even contacted by the FBI. “They asked me a laundry list of questions. Basically, their main concerns were about anybody that was sending death threats that were actually credible and anybody that was actually trying to radicalize this thing. People that think it’s legitimately serious – that we’re actually going to show up and storm the base,” he told USA Today. The government issued multiple warnings against storming the base.

Here’s how people reacted
"Could have been striking for the climate instead" You ever think that maybe people can do more than one thing in their entire lives? 365 days in a year and if you're not spending every single one of them protesting in the streets you're a waste of space who doesn't care about anything, apparently.
I mean, to be fair, that climate strike is also today.
Load More Replies...I really believe that this would make a better annual festival than burning man.
Why is it always the "Get a Job" comment. What makes people think that protestors don't have ? There was plenty of notice for me to take PTO for this event, and I work at WALMART. Lots of people with jobs could easily get the time off for this. If they didn't have jobs, how would they have paid the travel expenses? These aren't locals, and they aren't all youngsters either.
They are just having fun and not hurting anyone. I have no problem with that.
No, but that does not mean that this meet up was not expensive. I am sure that the military managed to burn a load of dollars on this. Planning sessions, undercover participants (maybe even most of them), a lot of extra personnel, etc, etc, etc. Ah, but then again, the military being the holy cow of the US, I do not really suppose that this money could have been spent neither on schools, the homeless, nor the elderly.
Load More Replies...I thought it wouldn't be taken too seriously. I mean, the millitary have guns. Lots of guns. And helicopters with guns.
Screw aliens. The intergalactic HITCHHIKERS are kept in Area 42. :P
I don't understand why people are hating on them. Let them have fun. And I mean, let's be honest, aren't we all a bit curious about what Area 51 holds?
so instead of the hundreds of thousands who signed up only hundreds showed up? ROFL
? Well you are someone Mondo. Why don't you organise it?
Load More Replies...I was sorta let down. Like, I was really expecting them to raid, not stand there, but it seemed fun.
Hey, let's make it a festival next year! Food, music, alien costumes...it would be great! Stormfest.
Please explain to this South African what is Area 51? Something to do with aliens it seems?
It is a highly protected military base that has conspiracies around it claiming it contains secret aliens.
Load More Replies...It's all a internet practical joke except for the Area 51 police force!
Let these people have their fun. Maybe some of them are using vacation days or maybe they work from home. Calling these people clowns is just plain mean. Also, if there is nothing there then why is it guarded?
Well, ALL military bases are guarded. That’s no mystery, and increasing security on a “threatened “ base is hardly an “ALIENS HERE!” sign. It’s more the secrecy around this bases purpose that attracts these folks. Most bases are pretty obvious about their purpose, although you are just as likely to get a gun shoved in your face on ANY base if you try to get on base without permission.
Load More Replies...The nasty twitter comments above show that people really need to either get a hobby or consider anti-anxiety meds. Jesus...they are just having fun...NEWSFLASH...they were not really going to storm Area 51...calm down people.
I think it's great. Both sides were respectful (the participants in the "raid" and the military personal) and they both seemed to have a good laugh. People got to go out and have fun for a day or two, maybe even sight see the towns around. It looked like a nice outing where people got to know each other, too. If they're enjoying it, why does it matter? It isn't hurting anyone and the outcome definitely did not turn out as dangerous as we thought it would be. How many of us can say we got a picture in front of the Area 51 gates? I think it's pretty cool!
I don't get why some people getting angry. I think it's rather entertaining. Lmaoo
Let me join the fun. Pretend I said a joke with the punchline consisting of something being held and/or happening at an "Area" with any other 2 digit combo except 51. You may commence laughing now.
We all knew exactly how it would look the moment it was posted, I'm just surprised most managed to get bus fare together for the journey.....
Me : let's go rade Area 51!!!! Brother: why the hell am I at school let's go!!!! Me: dies of laughter
Has anybody ever seen this video? Alien exists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGgPGR1Pjyk
Haven't you heard about it? It's been all over the internet for a while now
