“I Applied Online At 5 Guys”: Restaurant Chain Drops Its Potential Employee’s Hourly Wage From $18/Hr To $14/Hr
Most of us know how problematic workplaces can be; unhealthy environment, disrespectful management and backstabbing colleagues. Though we all understand that working is something that we absolutely must do in order to sustain a comfortable life, many individuals find it exceptionally unpleasant. Folks that have spent a ton of money and dedicated their sweet years to get a degree for a thing they once loved end up being stuck in a miserable cubicle, working day and night for someone else’s profit.
Of course, all companies are different and have different cultures, yet it’s a fact that we live in a money-driven world. Fortunately, during the past few years, our society has been continuously advocating for better work conditions, resulting in many organizations changing their toxic approaches. However, many businesses still vastly care about their earnings and don’t miss an opportunity to save a buck or two.

Finding a decent job is tough enough, let alone having to deal with companies that lie about their pay

This online user took it to one of Reddit’s work-inspired communities to reveal a story about a sticky situation they recently encountered. “I applied online at 5 Guys and the listed rate was $18 an hour. At the interview, they said $15 an hour but the tips would make up for it. Now, this.” The former candidate shared a screenshot of the texts they shared with a hiring manager showing that the hourly wage of $18 that was initially listed was no longer valid as their base pay has dropped to 14 bucks an hour.
Applicant reveals how a fast-food chain continuously misinformed them about their potential wage

The person began their post by sharing a screenshot from a text conversation they had with a Five Guys hiring manager. As expected, it all started out with a harmless introduction where the manager revealed that they’d actually sent the OP an offer through the Interviewy platform. Once the author of the post reviewed their potential contract, they immediately contacted the company’s representative as the promised $15 had magically lowered to $14. The OP wondered why the pay was different to what they’d discussed, to which the manager said that their base pay is, in fact, 14 bucks an hour – however, the now ex-candidate would’ve been able to push it to $17 with the work’s bonuses.
The restaurant’s representative, kind of rhetorically, asked the author if they’d rather earn $15 than $17, while also mentioning that the manager was “misinformed” about the starting pay. A couple of minutes later they sent a text, giving an example that the chain’s Portsmouth location also has a $14 base pay but their average comes out to $19/hr. The OP then replied, saying that they simply want their 15 bucks.

The Five Guys employee then bombarded the author with a few texts basically saying that the manager is not responsible for choosing the starting rate. They mentioned that there’s actually a sign on the door and on the website stating that the pay is up to $18+ an hour, not $18 an hour. However, the worker was willing to help and even suggested setting up an interview purely to discuss the pay. The messages ended with them somewhat gaslighting the former applicant, saying that the manager had never said that the base pay is $15, she actually said that it’s between $14 and $15.
Fellow Redditors started a discussion regarding this questionable situation
The situation sparked a debate among the Reddit users; some say not to believe in the whole “the tips will make up for it” malarkey, as their 16-year-old child works at the company and the bonuses are practically non-existent, and others say that it should actually be illegal to add the potential tips to listings since they’re literally misleading the job-seeking folks.
People also recommend avoiding places that advertise themselves with an “up to” pay at any rate. Businesses deliberately add the potential bonuses to the wage to make it more appealing to the applicants, but, in reality, it’s tremendously low. Someone even suggested leaving a negative review to warn any potential employees about their lies.
A Redditor pointed out that tips aren’t wages, saying that it’s pretty unethical to withhold information about the actual pay. Someone else also said that if they are able to make $15/hr at home, with no equipment, other employers should really reconsider their approach.

Besides, a user stated that if an applicant has this type of tension with their yet-to-be-manager, they shouldn’t expect to be working in a wholesome environment. They also mentioned that if the OP does decide to accept the offer, they should at least consider a different location.

Share on FacebookWho is tipping at Five Guys? It's fast food. Expensive (dare I say, overprice) fast food. I've never tipped anywhere that should be paying their employees a decent hourly wage already.
Why tip at all? Especially a burger joint that is self service. Tip jars all over! Gas stations, Subway, pizza joints, etc. AND.. some pizza joints say...tip your driver for good service! Define good service! Paid for the pizza and delivery fee! Who are you to tell customers how to spend their money?! Went to Spaghetti Works. Take out. Cashier actually expected a tip which we didn't do!
Delivery drivers don't make minimum wage. They use their own vehicle to bring you the food you don't want to go get yourself. Wear and tear, gas, oil, insurance, registration. Tip your delivery people or go get it yourself.
Load More Replies...To be honest 14 an hour is not bad for flipping burgers, most bank tellers don't even make that much. Not saying you should lie about wages but still
What's the point if you can't survive on it.
Load More Replies...It's a freaking fast food place. Get a freaking life. You want 18.00 a hour. Un freaking believable. You young people are unreal.
Amen. Subitches wouldn't have made it back in the day!
Load More Replies...So right! We just ate at 5Guys in Pigeon Forge, had 1small plain hb, 1reg.cb, 1cb all the way, small ff & 2small drinks. I was flabbergasted when he said $43.00! I would have been just as happy & so would my wallet have been with a McDonalds. If they charge that much for their food then they can pay their employees a decent living wage!!!
work for what they pay or find something else. Why is this even a story?
Are you trying to miss the whole point of the story, or are you really that ignorant?
Load More Replies...Do not work any fast food, even upscale fast food or fast casual , where they say you'll get tips or your hourly wage includes tips. People rarely tip fast food workers even if it's warranted. Its just the idea that fast food isn't really 'service' oriented like a sitdown restaurant it. I don't necessarily agree with that, it's just the reality.
Minimum vage in denmark is 18$/hour... > 18 yo and then there is 12,5 % for payed vacation and xtra for your pension etc.
In America you either work your self to death, or you are lazy and left to die. Either way it's just a miserable capitalistic hellscape.

Tip? At a burger joint?! Customers place their order, pay and collect the food. Why tip?!?! Damm tip jars all over! Coffee shops, gas stations, etc. Screw that. Went to Spaghetti Works. Take out. Cashier actually expected a tip!! Subway, Dominos, etc. Tip jars! Not tipping. And....AND...some pizza joints say....tip your driver for good service! Who the buck are you to tell Customers how to spend their money! Paid for the pizza AND a delivery fee! Tip for what?
To be fair 14 an hour to flip burgers is not bad. Don't agree with misleading people but most bank tellers don't even make that much.
My husband got laid off and was on unemployment for 2 months. They made him apply for any job of equal pay. He applied for a security position at a school and got an interview but when he showed up the first thing the lady said was "can you not f*ck any of the kids? Even if they ask for it?". Like, wtf? It was an elementary school job. Then she told him flat out that the hourly rate they'd advertised was a lie to get people to apply. He had fun relaying that convo to his employment counselor.
I always wonder if people like the guy speaking with the interviewee know that they're just speaking straight bs. Like do they know and just deal with it cause it's their job? How can people even be happy knowing their just f*****g around with other people who are just looking for a job, it's pretty sad
If you're not willing to pay anybody $18/hr then you have no business putting the number 18 anywhere in your hiring info. I don't give a fk if it reads "up to" in front of it or not. It's dishonest. You're not paying ANYBODY $18/hr to start so you shouldn't be insinuating that you are. It's not just fast food places either that do this, but ALL kinds of jobs. All over Indeed you see the same crap claiming "up to" or a range based on experience. But then they always offer the lowest number in that range no matter what experience you have. Change the sign or the ad to read $14/hr + possible bonuses. Stop wasting people's Fking time going through the interview process under false pretenses! Especially since asking about compensation before or during the first interview is frowned upon. They know this. They know that your not going to ask about the salary in the first interview because you don't want to blow your chances of getting the job.
Meanwhile you jump through all the hoops that you're supposed to for the interview. You get your haircut, etc., you buy a suit or you get your suit cleaned, you get all dressed up. You practice the interview you go through all the stress and practice your interview technique and answers. All the nervousness that goes with it, you show up for the interview & it goes well, you get called for a second interview. Then they contact you and congratulate you and then proceed to tell you that it's $14 an hour. It's bullsht is what it is! You've gone and wasted days, weeks even, on a company waiting to hear back and then they want to pay you like your fresh out of high school.
Load More Replies...I just saw a dell taco sign that they are starting at 18 an hour. Dang “Five Guys,” that’s low!
You have to realize the trap is this: $18 or $19 is the CEILING NOT THE FLOOR. Theoretically they could set the floor at $7.25 an hour and claim "but hey you could make up to $19 an hour if pigs fly, the moon turns to blood and it starts raining actual frogs outside." Skip these cheapskates. They obviously don't really need the help.
The "up to" and the "+" combine to mean: "it could literally be any number. We're going to pay you what we want" Also, maybe record your interview. I've been bamboozled many times by managers announcing that I've broken a rule they told me about in the interview/onboarding, which they never actually did. No proof. It was their word against mine and I was discredited for being young, new, and 'mentally disabled'. Don't make the gaslighting easy
McDonald's does this. They advertise up to $21.00/hr in Traverse City Michigan. I'm at BK and I make $17/hr flat which was what I was offered back in January. The most money I've ever made.....ever.
It's interesting to see the comments from people saying they can make more working from home. If that's true, then why arent they already doing so? If your resume will get you that kind of work why on earth would you want to work in food service?
Because some young people want the social aspects of working with co-workers. I expect my daughter would rather work in a restaurant rather than knocking out one customer service call after another, every seven minutes, for hours on end.

I've worked at 2 Five Guys, back when they first opened in our area. First one was great, and I really got on well with the management. Then I moved states and eventually started at a Five Guys there and it was a horrible experience. Then as soon as the district manager came in, and I found out it was my old manager who and we got to talking about issues, I was fired by the store manager. Thankfully I won my unemployment case. It was a terrible experience.
Are they really that desperate for employees to haggle with this person? This potential employee hasn't even been hired yet and is complaining already.
Are they really that desperate? Yes. No one wants to work for them and they can't sell food and make money without people. They are about to be dead in the water.
Load More Replies...A lot of jobs do this now. I was offered a job that said up to 14-20 an hour and when I went to the interview they said 11 if I'm in store and 8 if I'm delivering. I let them get everything set up anticipating hiring me, then bailed for a job that actually paid what they said.
So. Since when is fast food as dangerous and worth 18 dollars like working in a warehouse full of hazardous materials that literally make up everything all of us use. Fast foods annoying at times but if a slacker like me can outperform basically a whole team cause everyone screws around and cries as they barely do the job in the first place. Maybe stop treating fast food like its meant to support peoples lives cause its not and if thats your highest goal you need help.
DAMMITMAN. Sounds like someone has some common sense 🤔. Best comment I've read! Amen
Load More Replies...It probably said up to $18/hr Which is an absurd amount for a burger flipper. My first job 20 years ago was $5.75/hr. Why don't people understand you get paid more by increasing your marketability with a skill. Not complaining about getting $14 an hour to flip a burger!
Hm. Wonder what the cost of living was back in 1990 or whenever you made $5.75.

I had the same problem with MENARDS. They advertised 17/hrs, they even had it posted on their front doors. I applied online. Next day they called me for an interview. The interview went very well. They than scheduled a second interview which was going pretty good, til they told me the 17/hr was for the pandemic only which was set to expire in a month than the starting wage was going to be 12/hrs. They asked if that was going to be a problem. I told them no but,no thanks. I told them they should have mentioned that at the beginning of the first interview, instead of wasting my time. I left without waiting for a response. Haven't been in a MENARDS since then
Why would I pay a tip at a fast food place anyway? I don’t give unless I’m waited on at a restaurant. Also, my local FG has a sign that says “average”starting pay is $20 an hour. Now I o ow why it’s stated in that weird way.
I have been thinking the whole tipping thing is out of control and personaliy think that scam on the customer and the server is needing to end forever and do people actually tip at fast food places.i have worked a bunch of years in the restaurant business as the cook not the server I rarely got tipped and I did have a hand in the meal they're tipping for but forget about the horrible pay the server is making and I have over my extensive years years used a tip to explain how bad the overworked UNDER PAID server did there job even then I didn't try to humiliate them and have had a few days on the way out f@#$ you very much your welcome is the usual reply but the tip is a little thank you for the meal and sevice and I don't have a clue how people can say that it is a 18$ an hour position and usually that's when I decline the offer because if they are being dishonest and if you can't trust them on the first day) you'll not be able to trust them down the path
For a kid who should be working there after school, and wknds and during summer to EARN extra money. 14$ an hr is awesome. No one should try to make a living off of a fast food job. Wanna make more I suggest get real job! Get into a trade. Don't complain about we deserve a living wage. GET A LIFE

It's not fast food. It's fast casual. And all five guy does is care about employees and the customer experience. I worked for the company. We got an hourly wage, tips and bonus checks every week. If you do your job.... Secret shoppers come 2 times a week, plus an extra monthly and quarterly visit....if we get 100 on the report the check gets split between those on that shift, amount based on stores overall sales average for the year. And the company pays for these shoppers. It's a great company, started by a small family who believes in taking care of their employees and the rest takes care of its self..... All products are fresh not frozen and come from the same distributor always...incase of any recalls... You also get a free meal every shift...so if your kid makes 15 bucks an hour....plus all the extra be greatful! I made less than 6 an hour when I was a kid
Just because you enjoy being lied to doesn't mean everyone else does.
