Teen Goes Against Anti-Vaxx Mom And Gets Vaccinated At School, Mom Has A Major Meltdown
Opposition to vaccines goes as far back as 1772 when Reverend Edmund Massey in England called them “diabolical operations” in his sermon, “The Dangerous and Sinful Practice of Inoculation.” But even now, after vaccines heavily contributed to decreasing rates of common childhood diseases and have even wiped out some diseases that were common in the past (such as smallpox, rinderpest) and have nearly eradicated malaria and polio, some people still fight against them. Recently, 14-year-old Beth from Canada posted a conversation she had with her anti-vaxx mom after getting vaccinated at school in fear of suspension.
“I’m a freshman in high school, and my mom never let get my vaccines in grade 7, which caused me to be suspended in grade 7 and 8,” they wrote. “This year, the kids who hadn’t gotten them were called down to get them, and I had missed 4 very important vaccines. I got them, and I was given a note to show my mom what I had gotten. When I told my mom, she got mad because I didn’t ask her, and she wasn’t given any heads up about it (she was given notice). She [said] that it was wrong and awful that they did that because she said that the vaccines I got cause problems and diseases, which I obviously believed for a long time as I was raised to believe that, but now being older I can see how messed up that is.”
“She went on about how she was going sue my school for giving me vaccines and she was calling the cops. When I got home she yelled at me for having them done. I calmly tried to tell her they were important to my health, which prompted her to take my phone and say I’m not allowed to make that decision for her. I didn’t want to be suspended AGAIN for not having the vaccines done.”
“Am I the a**hole for caring about my education, health and the health of others?”
“I’d describe my relationship with my mother as pretty distant,” Beth told Bored Panda. “Others have commented on my bond with my mother saying its almost like we live in two different houses, we don’t talk very often.”
“I’m not too sure if my mom was always against vaccines, in fact, I didn’t find out until the incident,” she added. “Unfortunately, I don’t think she’s ever going to change, she’s not the type of person to back down when she makes a decision.”
Luckily, Beth managed to gather information elsewhere. “I’ve formed my own opinion with vaccines just by learning in school the dangers of not getting them, and what should be common knowledge.”
Beth even uploaded a picture of the immunization notice they received
According to a 2018 study, the recent rise of anti-vaccination movements in parts of the Western world poses a dire threat to people’s health and the collective herd immunity. People of all ages have fallen victim to recent outbreaks of measles and even parents favorable to vaccination can be confused by the ongoing debate, leading them to question their choices. The best ways to combat the anti-vaxx movement are putting a strong emphasis on helping parents develop trust in health professionals and relevant authorities as well as educating them on the facts and figures, debunking the myths, and even introducing legislation that promotes vaccination, if not mandating it.
And the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), mentioned by the author of the post does exactly that. Its main mission is to strengthen the publicly funded immunization program, requiring Ontario students attending school to have up-to-date immunizations against designated diseases. If students from schools that are subject to the ISPA fail to comply with the act, the board of health will require to suspend that student.
People had a lot to say about the situation
Ok - experiment - I believe vaccinations are unneccessary, dont work and kill more children than they save
diane a, I don't know what to do, upvote yote you for trolling the trolls or not do it for fear of spreading more desinformation. Thanks! There is light in the darkness.
Load More Replies...I seriously think someone at BP has shares in the companies that make vaccines. A post, or two, or 5, but goddamn it there's literally at least a post per week.
I think it's because the anti-vax movement is so ridiculous that it deserves daily ridicule. It'd be funnier if it wasn't making innocent people (mostly children) sick... or dead.
Load More Replies...because everyone should be - herd immunity will protect your kids only if over 90%, ideally over 95% are vaccinated - your child needs to be one of them, to protect themselves and others.
Load More Replies...It seems my common sense with reasoning and examples against pro-vaxx propaganda has not been published. Does that scare you at all? I have worked in pharmaceuticals for many years and I know what I am talking about and I wish to share a different side that is more grey than anti-vaxx = h i t ler and pro-vaxx = je sus. A Pro pa ganda site this is.
Dont bring je=sus into this - or even Hitler - neither of them was that bothered about vaccinations - sure Jesus would have been in favor of saving the little children if vaccination had been available. - Or am I wrong?

Load More Replies...Aww bless, someone was so butt hurt by this article that they posted it on one of their anti-vax Facebook groups for everyone to downvote all the pro-vax comments. Don't you guys have something better to do, like making kale smoothies to ward off the cooties from us vaccinated folks?
I like how all the anti vaxx "Doctors" are not sleeping or working but instead staring at their phones and furiously making accounts to downvote reasonable and funny comments about the your stupidity. Also, I predict this comment will get ten downvotes, because you will see this and get triggered
Seriously, someone made 20ish fake accounts, just for upvoting anti-vaxers?! Geez.

I've been wondering for a while, do any of the anti vaccinations people get flu shots? I bet this comment gets lots of down votes for some bizarre reason too, even though it's another genuine question.
Probably not. I wish I could get the flu shot. I've actually got the flu right now.
Load More Replies...At least half of the populations would be wipe out by now if vaxx causes all the problems listed in your anti-vaxx handbook. Just saying.
If a parent doesn't want her child to be vaccinated, that is her choice. Who are we to push our beliefs on other people. Anti Vaxxers just want what's best for their child and you should all respect that. Upvote this if you agree.
My daughter nearly died of pneumonia as a baby because of me being late on her pneumococcal vaccination. That one vaccine I was late on could've helped us avoid the ordeal. 10 years later, I still feel horrible, but made sure all her other vaccines and boosters are on time.
Wow... I put out there that I have cancer due to HPV... and the comment (along with many others that discussed diseases and such) got 23 downvotes? So much hate on BP. However, those that did wish me well, I do thank you.
I have been HPV positive for a number of years. The vaccine is only effective if a given at a younger age. It wasnt available when I was a teenager. Why do people NOT want their kids to be immune to this? It is pretty much the only anti-cancer vaccine out there.

Didn't read the whole thing. Was this a parenting fault, or the US medical system?
I do not understand all the hatred for people who want vaccinations done. 30. 30 false profiles?
So who are behind pushing another emotional issue into a mainstream grandstand issue that should have remained a NON-ISSUE? Vaccines and abortion. If people are preoccupied with non-issues, then WTF are they letting slip by in the background? A LIVABLE PLANET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS should be way higher up on most peoples agendas.

anyone at all notice that in the course of the last month there have been three different articles that portray some high school kid wanting to get vaccinated? i did.
Some vaccines can have extremely serious side-effects - the HPV one, for example. I think it is necessary to vaccinate, but it'S not necessary to take every immunisation on the planet that was ever invented. But it's impossible to even get decent information to do some risk assessment, especially online, since the whole debate has become so bat-s**t crazy.
Doh - it is neccessary to take the vaccinations against the common childhood killer diseases and any other likely ones that can be prevented. Granted you dont need the Yellow Fever, or Typhoid ones unless you are travelling to an area where it is prevalent. The Typhoid one is pretty evil - you need to almost wear your arm in a sling for a few days after - I had it at 35, before travelling to Kenya. Least I didnt get typhoid - which can kill you.

it's not truly a bullying technique. It's to make awareness for people to get vaccinated-not for money, but for the public health, especially children and elderly. You think the pharmaceutical employees do it for money? They all have to be vaccinated as well. So, if you get sick, you don't go to the dr? they'll charge you more for all the necessary testing to find the right treatment. You don't take any medications? Medications usually have more side effects, and more often, than vaccines. You won't take antibiotics? Those don't go without risk, but you take them to save your life. The "cure" of the disease is more expensive than the shot that prevents it. Vaccines are not this not this big money maker. That's a copout, because several places give free or low cost vaccines.
Load More Replies...No vaccines are 100% safe, you would know that if you really worked on pharmaceuticals. But as everyone else who's an anti vaxxer who "works in the field" you're probably full of s**t and know your argument is invalid. My god, you people are dense
Load More Replies...There is no reason to be against vaccination. Most countries have entirely free vaccination programs, because the science is proven and tested. Though Jenner's first crude vaccination we eliminated small pox and we were on the verge of doing that with other life threatening and debilitating diseases such as polio. The hysteria and paranoia that has driven the "movement" is endangering the lives of so many. This is regression.
