Welcome to the land of the weird and the beautiful—the ancient sceptred isles, where people drink their beer by the pints, celebrate mysterious Bank Holidays that occur several times a year, and toss their trash out the first time they see a bin. Bins are holy there and the chance to do so comes very rarely, if ever.

But according to Jessica Rose, an American who’s been living in great Blighty for the past few decades, the list doesn’t end there.

Recently, Jessica listed all the “weird as hell things” Brits do in a thread that amassed 64.8K likes and went viral with people praising how spot-on it is. Let’s get ready for the quaint and quirky ride in the land of Britons.

Bored Panda reached out to the author of this viral thread, Jessica Rose, a woman in her 30s who works in the technology industry. After 10 years, Jessica still lives in Birmingham, UK and says that she really likes most things about life in the UK.

When asked what British things Jessica really likes, she said that as an American, she finds the National Health Service “mind-bogglingly amazing.”

“I also really love the public transport here. And almost everything about Birmingham. Am I allowed to mention it's the best city in the UK? I don't think there's much I dislike about living here, some things are just still weird after 10 years.”

It's called courtesy. No harm in being polite, and it brightens the drivers day to know he is appreciated. Happy drivers are less likely to hit the curb

But that doesn’t mean that Jessica doesn’t miss the American way of living. “It seems like a silly thing to miss, but as my days get really busy, I miss shops being open as late as they are in the states,” she told us.

Jessica also believes that “a lot of the misconceptions of and stereotypes about the British mistakenly group all of the UK into a homogeneous lump while the UK is really a massively diverse group of people across our 4 countries (N. Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England).”

Yeah many beaches in the north are mostly pebbles and yes......you will be mugged by seagulls for your watch, keys, wallet and finally your chips and there is nothing you can do about it and nobody can help.

This is the case with the famous English breakfast. “For example, people from outside the UK often think of the English breakfast as something singularly British, while overlooking the (far superior) Scottish fryups,” Jessica said.

The difference is in the smell and sticking to your shoes intensity. Dpg poop is extremely disgusting. Horse poop not so much.

Dog poop also carries many serious nasty diseases. Horse poop on the other hand doesn't and is good for fertiliser.

You are supposed to but there are a lot of selfish arseholes who like to think their dog mess is treasure for someone else to find.

Yeah that is bad. I was in Newcastle a few years ago when I overheard two people talking. One said she was nearly fined on the spot because her dog did a poo on the road. The officer cautioning her was on a horse. After he watched her pick up the mess he road away. She said he was only halfway down the road when his horse lifted his tail and plopped out in one go what her dog would do in a week and just rode on. Their justification is that horse poo is not as dangerous as dog poo. Whatever that means

You were downvoted for telling the truth! Horse s**t can kill many lives. Human and dogs and rabbits lives. Tetanus? Nope. Bacterias? Nope. From the people who made a one time call with a horse. I hope.

The horse craps on the road. Dogs do it on the pavement and it’s against the law not to pick up after your dog.

Horses can crap on bridleways as well but yes it is an offence not to pick up after your dog.

Since the lockdown, dog ownership has skyrocketed (with a mixture of clueless new owners and misbred puppy farm victims) and the amount of poo has multiplied immensely (as well as unwanted dogs in kennels).

In your country. In mine you have to care of your animal poop. Paris is not France, because Paris is the least french place in France. Like New York is not North American, like Mumbai is not India, like Marrakech is not north africa...

Horse poo is good fertiliser, since horses diet is plant based. Dogs diet is meat based, meaning their poo is very different, and can transmit dangerous bacteria.

I saw a warning sign in Whitby, the fine for not cleaning up after your dog was more than £1000! Quite a deterrent I should think.

Horse crap won't blind you or kill you if you fall in it or digest accidentally or something, that's why it is used as compass and dog and cat crap isn't, whole another level of toxic.

Years ago, I was looking at the newspaper pictures in the offices of the Windsor Observer after Prince Philip competed in the local horse and carriage driving competition. 1st one was Prince Philip tacking up his carriage and pair. 2nd was him driving carriage and horses out of Windsor Castle. 3rd was him driving carriage down the High Street. 4th was a street cleaner with a shovel scraping something off the road and obviously mouthing obscenities at the receding Prince!

Horses deposit herbivorous waste, not a risk to health so much. Dogs being carnivorous well, can be very dangerous to health

Risking sounding bleh, the digestive systems of dogs and horses, and the food that they eat, are entirely different. Horses issues, good for the roses. Dogs issues in town, good for illnesses.

Horses in public are usually on the road, whereas dogs tend to poop on pavements. I grew up in the 70s and well remember having to avoid stepping in dog poop which was everywhere, or sometimes not realising until it had been traipsed into the house. I'm really glad that 99.9% of people clean up after their dogs now.

Dog and cat poop is from Meat waste primarily, hence the stickiness and disgust. Horse poop is all grass. It washes away easily and the smell does not linger

Horse poo is easier to spot before you tread in it. When we had horsedrawn vehicles it was not uncommon for there to be a bucket on the back, as horse poo is good for roses, and they could collect it and sell it.

We go to the counter and let them know what is wrong. We very rarely have to ask for it to be corrected as the person behind the counter usually offers to fix it and offer options.

The hot water supply comes from a tank in the loft, which could be contaminated. It was UK law to keep hot and cold separate to keep drinking water (cold) clean. now its just tradition.

It was actually introduced during the war when water could be cut off or there were many shortages. Filling up a bowl uses half the amount of your sink. People just carried on using them as saving water is always a good idea. Remember our tap water is our drinking water too.
