Even though both Europe and the USA belong to the Western World and agree on most fundamental democratic principles, they don't see eye-to-eye on everything. According to a recent study, Americans and Europeans often have different perspectives on the way of life - individualism, the role of government, free expression, religion, and morality.

However, Reddit user IBringTheGinger wanted to know how these differences manifest themselves in everyday life. So they created a post, asking Europeans to list the funny problems that are too American for them to understand. It immediately blew up, and, as of this article, has nearly 64K upvotes and 57,5K comments. Scroll down to read some of the most popular first world problems and let us know if you agree with them!

"Since Reddit is US-centric, I've seen many posts and comments about problems that seemed typically American to me such as being broke because of student debt or postponing going to the doctor because you can't afford it. So I was curious to see if other Europeans like myself ever felt the same way or if they had heard about other 'American problems' that I didn't know about," IBringTheGinger told Bored Panda.

The amount of attention their post got really surprised IBringTheGinger. "From what I've seen on r/AskReddit, how many upvotes you get can be extremely random depending on the day and hour you post at and there's nothing you can do about it. I never managed to get past like 300 upvotes before. Almost 60k comments is just crazy."

Even though they knew a lot of the things that were mentioned in the replies such as problems in the healthcare system or excessive swearing-censoring on the TV, they made IBringTheGinger understand the different culture better. "I learned about others and seeing all those issues combined in one place really made me realize I'd never want to chase the American dream myself. Well, not if I wouldn't be hugely compensated for it at least, like a job offer or something. But I doubt that would ever happen anyway."

The idolization of politicians. They are public servants, similar to a courthouse clerk or a city hall coordinator. They are not rock stars. You don't need to scream their name, buy their merch, fully commit your life to them and believe everything they say. Just... treat them like public servants. Sure, they get power and position but hold them accountable when they abuse it. Don't let corporations and politicians take over, the political system is created by the people, FOR the people. It just... boggles the mind.

And whenever to tell someone that there’s something wrong with how the USA does things, people do one or more of the following: A. Yell at you “if you don’t like it, then leave!” (mindless nationalism, not patriotism)... B.They refuse to believe it’s better anywhere else... C. They tell you that any place with a seemingly better system is still actually worse because it’s “socialism” (and they are fully convinced by obsolete and never correct Cold War propaganda to reject anything that has the scent of “USSR” on it, whether legit or not)... D. They go as far as comparing the USA to some third-world hellhole or theocracy just to make the USA seem better by comparison (sinking to that low a bar is really f*****g revealing!!!).

In the Netherlands we do our annual taxes in an online app where most of the data is already entered. All you need to do is check, enter your deductibles and hit "Send" and you're done. But that isn't possible in the US because some greedy software companies managed to block the IRS from setting up a similar system as a free service.

American attorney here: 1. Waiters are often not underpaid - b/c of tipping some NYC waiters make $100k/yr. (median US income is about $63k). In other markets they often make an above avg. income. So yes, their hourly wage is low, but that's b/c tips often make their jobs very desirable considering that you can get the gig w/ out going to college. Many waiters here say they want it to stay this way. 2. Taxes aren't a guessing game: you can go on TurboTax of FreeTaxUSA.com or a ton of other sites, it says: 'Put this number from Box 7.A. here.'...And on and on like that. You put in numbers, it spits out what you owe or what you're getting refunded. You can also go to many tax prep places that will do it for you. I've done some work in criminal defense here - you would not do time for late taxes or making mistakes on them. At most you'd get fined for that. Doing time on tax fraud means the govt. has to show you significantly and intentionally misled the IRS.

Again, Big Business owns our politicians and have kept the pay for wait-staff artificially low for the last 50 years. It's $2.76 an hour for a back-breaking, thankless job. And the prices at the restaurants have not stayed down. A simple dish of trout with veggies and a drink will run one person $24.00 + tax. I tip 20% on the cost of the meal after tax not because I'm wealthy, but because I know how hard they work and how badly they're paid. Oh, and they must have a food handlers license, that they get to pay for themselves, before they can get hired.

I'm pretty sure the tipping thing was cooked up by another greedy American years ago. I was a waitress and bartender for years in the States. I was paid $1.50 an hour! So your have to make tips in order to make a "living wage". The idea behind it was the waiters would give better service to get a higher tip. But there's no law that makes customers have to tip! So you end up with nothing. The standard now is 20% in most places. However, older customers, typically still tip like it's the 19560's. Then you get cheap people who will claim you didn't give good service, even when you did, just to save a couple of bucks. I like it here better, I live in NZ, and waiters get paid an actual living wage with benefits! If you go above and beyond in your service it's not unheard of to get a tip...I feel that's more honest and it means much more here if you get a tip.

It’s pretty understandable if you are raised here. People are tipped (or not) depending on the type of service the perform and how well. In other words if a waiter brings your meal and continually checks to see if you need anything else, is considered better service rather than a waiter just leaving your food and then ignoring you.

ashleysovig avatar

Tip determination is up to the customer. It’s based on service. Was the service excellent, mediocre, or horrible? Why would one give a 20% tip if the waiter was MIA? If service is superior, tip is higher. Several states don’t HAVE tax. Many waiters/waitresses’ bulk of salary is tips. One doesn’t have to tip everywhere. Even if there’s a “TIP” jar, this doesn’t mean one has to drop in some coins; but it’s intimidating and some customers find it offensive. Tip jars are ubiquitous. Some business have a turntable machine so when one signs their name for credit card they ask you how much do you want to tip, giving the customer choices, but there’s NO CHOICE for “None” so people feel obligated to tip, which many find infuriating.

It’s not That complicated. You pay taxes through your paycheck (Your employer takes out the requisite amount based on what you earn and sends it to the government). Once a year You send a document in Provided by your employer to you as further proof you paid your taxes. If you had more taken out than needed, you get a refunds if you paid less - asked your employer to withhold less so you had more money in your paycheck- you may end up owing $. Of course ever always wants to pay less taxes.... but we also want the goveto pay for it give us tons of stuff. That takes money I,e. Taxes. The sars tax added to purchases made in stores or restaurants Etc is a state tax. Some states have them , some don’t. If your state does you know how much it is and can easily estimate the additional cost. It’s seperate on the bill so you know what you are paying the merchant and what us tax for the government.

For Tip: learn about the place (-s) you visit, get educated on them just like "some" of us do when we visit Europe. For Tax: Since some items are taxed at a different rate and some are not, it's easier to add the tax later than it is to constantly change the price tags. For underpaid waiters: Predatory greed. For doing taxes: There are many software packages and Companies who will do that for you. As an ex-European: As if doing your taxes is "easy" there. I remember doing my taxes myself in the 70's and 80's and by the time I was done, I was glad that I didn't become an alcoholic!

This one is curious. Doing taxes in Australia is quite easy? Few people use accountants unless they want to nickle and dime it (amusingly, since we have no nickles and dimes). There's also an app from the tax office where you can just scan any receipts and order them if they're applicable. But mostly all our insurance, pay etc is automatically calculated by the system.
