When I think of crafts, I picture these weird-looking items floating on Etsy like eternal shipwrecks that rise to the surface every time you genuinely need something. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with pursuing your hobby, but it’s a whole different story if you’re trying to make money out of something you wouldn’t buy yourself. Hence, there’s an entire craft-shaming movement that humorously mocks such instances.

But there’s a whole different side to craftsmanship and here we are talking the perfect fusion of idea, execution, skill, and patience. Mix them together and you see pieces of handmade art that put the mass production industry to shame.

And thanks to the subreddit r/Crafts, we have the most eye-watering collection of crafty objects that prove there’s no limit to human imagination. With a whopping 1.6m contributing to this online community, it’s easy to fall in love with crafts even if you weren’t a big fan of them in the first place.

Puntikva Report

Most people think of crafts as something that only kids do, but this hobby can yield incredible homemade results. Whether making gifts, adding some personal touch to your wardrobe, or improving your home decor, it can be a fun and budget-friendly way to impress others, yourself included. So if you have idle hands and are in the mood for trying to make something by yourself, scroll through this list of creative DIY project ideas.

But crafts are not only for the bored ones of us. A growing body of research has shown incredibly positive impacts making crafts has on dementia and Alzheimer's patients. Although a dementia patient’s ability to reason continues to diminish with progression of the disease, ‘exercising’ their brain can slow that process down.

Not only are crafts beneficial to dementia patients, many experts say they’re essential to their health and well-being. The best crafts for dementia patients are those that offer physical, emotional, and cognitive stimulation. The craft also needs to meet the level of challenge that is right for the person. Some of the easiest crafts are drawing and painting. People at various stages of dementia and with various skill levels can all benefit from these activities.

i something similar with slips and glazes for my pottery. my parent's house was settled on dirt with a high iron oxide content. for my mom's birthday, i threw a canister set for her and made a glaze with the dirt. it turnout out as an oatmeal coloured base with flecks of red and blood-brown. she loved it and dad was amused because he thought the onyl thing that came out of the garden was veggies.

I love the idea of "wild clay" (rather than just "local clay" or "natural clay" which I agree is far too tame).

Someone I know moved to a place in the country when she retired, found coarse "wild clay" on her land, and started using it for pottery. She's been so successful that she now gets so many commissions she can hardly make enough pots for craft shows!

Do you sell these in Brisbane anywhere? I'm local and would love to buy some to put succulents in as the colours would look amazing!
