Hey Pandas, AITA For Saying No To My MIL’s Expensive But Horrifying Home Gifts?

I (28F) celebrate my birthday around the same time as my partner, Alex (31M). Every year, his mom, Carol (55F), usually brings cash or small gifts. We get along fine, but we’re not super close – she’s quirky, fun, and sometimes acts more like a friend than a mother. She also has a habit of collecting strange things, so you never know what she might show up with.
This year, while I was at work, Alex got a surprise visit from her

Later, he told me she left gifts for us, but when I asked what they were, he said, “You’ll see.” I braced myself, knowing Carol’s history of unusual choices.
When I got home, I was led to a room where a giant bag was sitting.
Inside were two enormous taxidermy raccoons wearing tiny top hats and bow ties, and a giant neon-orange lava lamp shaped like a pineapple. Yes, really. I couldn’t stop staring.
For context, we just moved into a new apartment and renovated it fully in a minimalist, Scandinavian, organic style – clean lines, neutral colors, natural materials

These… things? They were the exact opposite of what we wanted. And to make matters worse, the price tags were still attached, totaling over $1,200.
Alex felt awkward in the moment and said, “Wow… we’ll figure out where to put them,” but I was just speechless.
I couldn’t imagine having taxidermy raccoons in our living room or a neon pineapple lava lamp anywhere in sight

The next day, I asked Alex to text his mom to see if it was possible to return them. Surprisingly, she agreed and told us we could drop them off at her work, which we did.
I know some people might say I should have just kept them, but I feel like it’s reasonable to have our space reflect our style – especially for something so expensive.
So, Pandas – AITA for returning these gifts? I just can’t get over how absurd and out-of-place they were, and I feel like it would’ve been a huge waste to keep them.

Share on FacebookSounds to me that momma Carol has a sense of humour and expected them to return the decor! This sh'ts dingo.😂
I feel like the mom just buys this stuff as a joke and to see how much they will take before they actually say something to her. Like others have said, she left the tags on, and that to me says she knew they would ask to return them. It's rather funny.
It is lol names for the raccoons on a postcard plz 😂😂😂oh n send em to me lol cos I’d love em
Load More Replies...You don’t say whether the MIL was bothered about returning the gifts, if she wasn’t bothered then it’s really a non issue, everyone is happy
It didn’t sound like she was bothered lmao so I’m going no , so this is a non story
Load More Replies...She knew they wouldn't be accepted or she would have removed the tags.
The tags wouldn't be on them ifnshe didn't think they'd be returned
Me to lol well maybe not the lamp ,we ain’t in the 1970s now even if I am. 60 lol , that’s ok the raccoons gimme gimme
Load More Replies...People should ask before buying fixtures, fittings and significant decorations for someone else's home. A friend once bought me a plant because I didn't have any in my flat - which was because I didn't *want* any, I didn't have space or inclination.
I had an aunt like this- she always found wacky/unusual/obscure gifts when I was a kid. Luckily we had the same taste and her gifts were always the highlight of birthdays and Christmas! Taxidermy anything is just... Nope. Creepy. But as others have said it feels like MIL was messing with them, especially with the tags left on.
I've never understood why people gift things that are so clearly not appropriate for the recipient! I married into a family that was very much that way, but with a twist. There were 3 daughters and 2 DILs (I'm one). For Christmas, if one daughter collected a particular thing - in one case, it was antique dolls - then we ALL got a doll from her parents. Because that made things "fair" and they got a good price. Dolls weren't identical, so everyone but me gifted their doll to the collector. I donated mine :-) My gift, my choice.
I feel in this case, Carol was trolling them. Why else would she leave the tags on?
Load More Replies...My sister does this. She expects me to hate her gifts, but it’s a joke. She will then bring out the REAL gift.
Those pineapple lamps are about $30 USD. So dead raccoons cost over $500? I'm so mad I scared them away when they were getting to our bird feeders.
if do so hope she never buys you another thing, ungrateful and rude doesn't cover it for me
Erm hmm 🙄😂😂😂😂ok the lamp HELL NO 😂aggadoo is now going around my head 😂but two stuffed trash pandas ok can I have those please ,we don’t got them in uk lol I’d have loved them , this is in fact a non story cos there’s no issue , mil was ok with exchanging em , but maybe just maybe m op needs TO FIND HER SENSE OF HUMOUR !! 😂😂cos I’d have found it funny as hell, n promptly named the raccoons lol ,but no to the lamp
