Colleague Makes Woman Cry By Saying One Of The Office Cats Is Dumb And The Matter Reaches HR

Interview

Concepts like stereotyping and ethnic prejudice are things that are always meant within the context of the human race. But shouldn’t these be broadened to include more than just humans?

An Am I The A-Hole? post has recently raised that question. Sorta.

One Reddit user turned to the AITA community for some answers on whether he’s the bad guy for “perpetuating ethnic stereotypes” about a particular cat that’s taken up residence in his company building.

Oh yeah, you’re in for a treat, dear readers.

More Info: Reddit | Update | Twitter

Meet Jorts and Jean (respectively), two office cats that have been going viral recently because of an argument

Meet u/throwawayorangecat (with whom Bored Panda got in contact) who some days ago came to the Am I The A-Hole community on Reddit with a very peculiar query. While the subreddit is primarily dedicated to figuring out issues in relationships, it’s a fairly unique occurrence to see a post that deals with both animals and stereotyping.

Anyway, the story goes that OP’s workplace has two resident cats: Jorts the ginger tabby and Jean the tortoiseshell. Jean’s been around for a while, and is considered the “smart one,” while Jorts… well, he is explained as “a simple guy.”

This person shared a story of how he was accused of “perpetuating ethnic stereotypes” against Jorts the Orange Tabby

You see, he’s the kind of cat that often gets himself into predicaments where he requires assistance from a human colleague—locks himself in, gets his head stuck in cups, and the like. Jean has no problems with that.

“Jean was a feral rescue from a rescue agency. Jorts just showed up one day behind the dumpster, Jean would sit and watch him through the window when we offered him food,” told OP the history of the office cats. “They got along like they were old friends, as soon as they were carefully introduced after he was cleared by the vet.”

So, one particular employee, Pam, decided to take it upon herself to train Jorts. But OP was of a different, more practical opinion, so he, for the door thing, installed door stoppers. Pam took them away as she had an issue with that—it strips Jorts of a chance to learn to open doors, like Jean can.

Now, as much as OP loves to see Pam teach Jorts, he’s of the opinion that the orange tabby is just too much to teach, so he again came up with a cat cutout door solution. And that upset Pam even more. And then OP came up with a light-hearted joke at Jorts’ expense: “you can’t expect Jean’s tortoiseshell smarts from orange cat Jorts.” And oh boy was Pam furious.

She was so furious, in fact, that she left work early and accused OP of perpetuating ethnic stereotypes by claiming that orange cats, like Jorts, are of questionable intellect. AND, demanding racial sensitivity courses for OP. And this whole situation prompted the question on the subreddit.

Off the bat, people online were on the side of practicality, and said that OP is not the bad guy here. Some thought it’s impossible to be racist against cats because they are cats and they don’t really give a gah-giggity about what people think of them.

Following the success of the original post, OP also provided an update post, explaining how HR got involved and other spectacular details

Others agreed that they haven’t ever met an orange cat that wouldn’t be dumb, so you can’t really insult a cat if it’s the way it is, and Pam is just torturing the little guy with her forced training.

Yet others turned this all into a joke and said that yes, they should go with racial sensitivity training, but make it all about cat breeds. All in all, people sided with OP and Pam got booed.

“The AITA replies did help. Never in a million years did I think any random weird post would connect so hard,” elaborated OP. “I guess as a society we are all just doing our best right now and a story with no a@#holes is actually just what we need.”

But wait, this story ain’t over yet as there’s an update! U/throwawayorangecat gave some more info about the situation as it developed. Long story short, HR was involved, who talked to both Pam and OP. Yes, OP did end up apologizing for all of the comically harmless shaming he did with Jorts and emphasized that bullying a colleague is never cool.

But we also learned that there had to be some line-drawing with Pam. She is not in charge of the cats, never officially was, and OP actually said she shouldn’t be. Mostly because she smothered Jorts in margarine to help him develop a hygiene habit. Yes, you read that correctly. She was allowed to maintain that duty, but not use margarine, but rather actual grooming methods.

Lastly, we asked OP what was Jorts’ take on being stereotyped against, and he had this to say: “neither cat will set foot on the new bed. Jorts always forgives instantly. Jorts is truly like a ray of brave sunshine.”

So, in conclusion, an absolutely bizarre situation of stereotyping cats leads to some very bizarre anger leading to some very bizarre confessions of buttering up cats, with ridiculously exciting tidbits in between.

You can see the two posts in context here and here. Oh, and if you didn’t get your fill of Jorts and Jean, they have a Twitter right here, so go peep it out!

But before you run off like some cats do hectically at 3 in the morning because cats, let us know your thoughts on this whole situation in the comment section below!

Quite the contrary, the workplace is just busy enough to get the job done (my guess) and have some extra time for little distractions so you don't hate going to work every day or burn out. We all need a place of work like this one. On the same note, all micromanagers are not maxed out on work either if they have time going around constantly bullying their staff.

I have never heard about a stereotype that ginger/red/orange cats are intellectually challenged. Cats don't understand bigotry or stereotyping. They can't read, either. Apparently Pam has overdone being "woke."

I've never heard it either, although I have heard that Tortoiseshells are strong-willed, energetic, and sometimes a bit of a problem. But nothing about orange cats, and in fact, my friend's orange cat is so ridiculously smart that I call him "Dr. Evil".

Some cats are dumb lol, doesn't make them less valuable members of the family, but Jorts is likely not going to learn to stop falling into the bin or shutting himself in rooms. I suspect Jorts may have been separated from mum and littermates too early but he could just be a loveable idiot. Pam is way too invested in teaching Jorts to cat. Let Jorts be Jorts!

The best can who ever lived was also the dumbest! My late kitty, Little Miss Perfect, was the sweetest, prettiest, cutest, most adorable, cuddliest, purriest, best behaved, most ladylike yet the most playful cat who ever lived... and she's get lost on her simple 3-platform cat tree because it was too complex for her. I mean, she'd be relaxing on one platform and want to go the the next one up or down... and she'd have trouble figuring out how. And now I have Dumb Bunny, who is almost as adorable and almost as stupid! Dumbass cats are the best!

I am willing to concede that if the cats are employed by the firm and have duties, they do deserve a little more respect than a picture of a sweet potato.

Pam needs some therapy, she's got other things going on here to just burst into tears when someone says a cat is a bit dumber than another cat. Also feeding margerine to a cat will make them very sick, she's shown she's now a danger to others. Pam needs professional assistance and a restraining order from the cats.

A million years ago, I worked for an insurance company that looked to hire the mentally ill. They felt they were helping them out, and they were. However, those of us working with them did not have the educational background to help them transition. And it didn't help that management simply plopped these people in our midst without so much as a heads up. One particular woman would walk past your desk and stare you in the eye the entire time, swiveling her head as necessary to keep that eye contact going as long as she could. At first, it weirded my out, then I found out she had some issues, so I ignored it. Other times she would walk up and ask the most inappropriate personal questions, and if you didn't answer she would start wailing like her foot was caught in a bear trap. Literally toss her head back and screeched. The girls (and I will say girls, because we were all quite immature, and all about 19-20 years old) I worked with and I would just run, if we saw her coming.

I think the fact that Jorts is a dumbass actually helps the office mood. That's the basic reason those cats are there. As long as no one is harming the cats. Like putting margarine on their fur I think it's all good.

Stupid cats are the best! So sweet, so low on trouble and drama, usually very well-behaved... because it'd never occur to them to do anything bad. I constantly thank the Universe for giving me two furry dolts, and yes, if Jorts is there to help morale he's probably doing a fantastic job just the way he is. Especially if he provides the occasional laugh.

I am SO GLAD that Pam was not granted responsibility for the cats. She clearly: (1) does not understand cats in the slightest, (2) does not understand that the cats were not upset or hurt by anything that was said or done, only that SHE was; (3) might have done real harm with her c**k-eyed ides and expectations, and (4) might have turned into an insufferable martinet and jealous about anyone else doing anything for them, up to and including "permission" to pat or play with them, possibly even completely denying access. Pam is lacking in so many ways here. I feel sorry for her. Does she do good work at what she hired for?

I've noticed an uptick in this kind of thing since COVID-19 hit, people are getting messed up by their "Fight or Flight" having been triggered constantly for two years & they're unable to do anything REAL about it. "Transference" has gotten out of hand. Our entire town was out of TP/butter for weeks, my sister came to visit & brought me some from the Capital. I was going from neighbor to neighbor offering to share (even w/o knowing when I'd get more) each even gave me money that I didn't ask for until... Michelle didn't even let me finish speaking & she starts SCREAMING at me for buying so much!?! It was from COSTCO!!! And I was 🤬 SHARING!!! She's screaming at me in the middle of the street, for the whole neighborhood to hear, following me, abusing my generosity!!! AND to this day, she's NEVER apologized in the least but complains to others bc when she comes up talking to me like I'm still her friend; I'm civil, always answer her, then immediately leave & she wants more 😒🙄🤨

Just.....wow! AITA for thinking that this was a great waste of company time and that Pam is a little cray??? I've never seen HR get involved in pussy problems but I guess with people getting so easily "triggered" and want to "cancel" everything and sue they now have to cater to this. Was it right to give two shits because Pam cried over the social treatments of orange tabbies in the workplace or AITA for thinking she should f*ck off?

PS also currently have a tuxedo who consistently gets behind the dryer and can't get out. also have an all black cat who is sweet and smart. so 50% of black cats are dumb in my book lol

Jort's seems to me to be one of those very rare cats who are sent into our lives to teach us some important life lessons about being more caring, considerate, and aware of our surroundings on levels most people aren't consciously aware of most of the time. Pam is apparently one of those hapless people who doesn't have the capability to learn from this feline "teacher", and will continue to stumble blindly through life until, hopefully, some life event will cause an epiphany. She also seems to have been excessively propagandized by "woke" culture. Let's hear it for the Jort's of the world whenever and wherever they manifest!

I've had two male cats in my life (neither was a ginger) and both were dumber than their female companions. Sweet and lovable, but dumb. Most of the male cats owned by friends and relatives were also not too bright. When an animal has no responsibility for raising offspring to maturity, he can afford to forego the costly luxury of brains.

You guys definitely have too much time on your hands but, indeed, red cats have a rough time dealing with prejudice because people measure intelligence in human terms. I'm NOT suggesting you release a bunch of rodent undesirables in your workspace, but.....have you ever watched Jords hunt? Red cats were imported by Vikings for this purpose only and they are absolutely amazing. Selective breeding. Teaching won't do much here.

I have a particularly dumb cat that can open wardrobe doors and drawers. Yet he can't figure out the cat flap door. I've also had a giant dog that couldn't figure out he could bump an open door with his head to enter a room yet the tiny dog could open any cracked door. Hahaha this is brilliant. Look I'm going to be frank. Pets are like people in a way. You can try to teach someone something new all you want, but if they don't get it, they don't get it. Maybe eventually they have an epiphany and bam they get it. Pets are the same. Some have the smarts and some are, let just say, not so blessed.

Where does this stereotyping idea come from. I have never in my life heard that ginger cats, or orange tabbies, or whatever you want to call them are stupid. the colour of a cat does not indicate it's intelligence any more than it does for humans, and nobody, except for Pam it seems, has ever thought it did.

Actually Mona, many people succumb to these fallacies, usually by being "taught" things by TV and movies. Such as giving dogs bones, cats milk and rodents cheese... all are bad and can possibly be deadly.

Pam applied trans fats to a cat to encourage grooming? Last I heard, leaving a stick of margarine outside will not attract insects and birds and rodents, because they can tell it doesn’t have nutritional value. Why would a cat be different? People don’t seem to understand that “animals aren’t intelligent like humans” isn’t the same thing as “animals are like mentally impaired/brain damaged humans.” But leave it to a white American to reduce racism to skin or fur color.

I wonder what kind of business OP works in; if cats are a bonus for customers I guess that’s one thing, but I’d be more concerned about the hygiene as it relates to humans than abut the safety as it relates to animals, which the trash can issue illustrates. I’ve been in spaces run by indiscriminate pet owners, and I was not fond of eating at tables cats had walked on, or stopping to get something off the floor only to have a dog run up and lick my face before I could get away, or or a pot of beer wort or a plate of food within reach of a big unleashed dog whose owner is so used to such chaos that they don’t even notice their dog getting a bite of my dinner or a lick of something that was supposed to ferment for a few weeks. I’m only allergic to cat dander, so if a cat is really well groomed I won’t have a problem, but other people have it much worse and couldn’t stand be in a room with anything an animal might have sloughed off on.

I think Pam needs to seek professional help gor her hypersensitivity and her need to control the orange cat's behavior. Torties are a breed that likes people and learn from observing humans. Orange Tabbys are more cat focused, and more feral, therefore less trainable. This unstable Pam person is trying to apply human issues to felines. This is an unrealistic expectation and she needs to find something healthier to occupy her mind. The Orange cat is not dumb, merely less domesticated. Her trying to force him to change is insulting to his nature.

I've never known a long-haired cat that wasn't a bit dense. Not a specific breed or anything, these were all regular house cats. They were never aggressive with anything, they all tilted their head the same way, liked to sit in kitchen sinks, get their heads stuck in things, didn't quite "get" other cats. "Oh you're growling and hissing at me, do you want headbutts? Why you hit me? You must want more headbutts!"

I have 3 cats. One off them is also really dump. I even went to the vet with it. We think she is just a little mentally challenged. I don't care. She is very sweet and I make sure she can go everywhere and is comfy. I love all 3 the same and maybe because off this we have a special bond. She is my little dump baby and in return I get a lot of very hard headbutts (wich can be very painfull haha). The other cats are nice to her so I believe she has a very good life here. This is a really stupid problem but yes there are dump cats and people. Only dump people can talk.

Sounds as if Pam can't accept Jorts just as he is and her attempts to 'improve' him (shutting him in, putting cup on his head, giving him diarrhoea(?!) are bordering on abuse.

AND to this day, she's NEVER apologized in the least but complains to others bc when she comes up talking to me like I'm still her friend; I'm civil, always answer her, then immediately leave & she wants more 😒🙄🤨

one of my cats a tabby Maine coone called Oscar he is lovely cat quite big as Maines are can open the door but he tends to push open with his face not his head his face its so funny because you can hear him clawing at the bottom of the door to open it then for some reasons pushes it open with his face

i've had an orange cat. he was sweet as a baby, but dumb as a rock. i also currently have a tortie, who is a little less affectionate but very smart. i have also heard numerous stories about cats and the orange ones are super sweet but dumb and torties are a bit stand-offish but smart, typically. pam needs to let the cats be themselves. PS also currently have a tuxedo who consistently gets behind the dryer and can't get out. also have an all black cat who is sweet and smart. so 50% of black cats are dumb in my book lol

If this is real, then I'm absolutely lost for words. I absolutely ADORE cats and have three of my own. But for f**k's sake, THEY'RE CATS!!! What a waste of work and staff time, let alone using the word "racist" in reference to coat colour! I honestly don't understand the world I find myself in sometimes...

My orange boy falls into the category of not terribly bright, but i discovered when my other cat died that Cat #2 stressed him out a lot. When he has time to (slowly) puzzle things out on his own, he has a lot of tenacity and shows more intelligence and capacity to learn than I gave him credit for.

You can tell Pam has never had pets. It's sweet she cares and wants to help but she is causing far more issues for the poor cats. I have a particularly dumb cat that can open wardrobe doors and drawers. Yet he can't figure out the cat flap door. I've also had a giant dog that couldn't figure out he could bump an open door with his head to enter a room yet the tiny dog could open any cracked door. Their just like furry kids, some are clever and some aren't!
