I play on a rec softball league. We recently had our year end tournament that runs all weekend, and they have a small beer garden set up. Cassandra (early 30's) is a bit of a lush. The few games she has shown up to during regular season, she has been half cut, or half cut by the time she leaves, and always ready to go to a bar to continue drinking (we play weeknights so most people just want to go home as they have work in the am). Most people on the team find her annoying. For our tournament we were hanging out at the fields from mid morning until evening (8ish) with a long break in between our 1st and 2nd games, so we did what most people do and sat and enjoyed some drinks in the beer gardens. They league was also giving away prizes and Jackie won a 2'6 bottle of booze, which Cassandra took upon herself to share among the team, and anyone else that would walk by, thoroughly pissing off Jackie as it was rightfully hers. Every time I looked at Cassandra, that bottle was to her lips and by the end of the day there was about 1/4 of the bottle left. We all said it was Cassandra that drank most of it, though she denies it, claiming it was shared with every one, but I honestly didn't see any one else drink from it, maybe a couple sips but it was definitely mostly her. Besides that, she had many other beers through out the day, and apparently she was also doing coke with Mike. She reeked of booze, was a bit wobbly and she had the eyes that said "i am fucked off my ass right now". She was also on call for work, and her line of work requires full attention, and should do random drug testing if they don't already. Mike lives way on the other side of town, a solid 40min drive through city streets, and was offered a ride home by a couple people that lived closer. Cassandra lived in the opposite direction from Mike, but insisted to drive him home. We advised she not drive, that Mike not get in the vehicle with her, but she insisted she was not drunk. So I called the cops on her and reported her vehicle but allowed her to leave, hoping the cops will pull her over. They never found her, and every one made it home safe and sound. The next day, rumour got out that someone from our team called the cops on her and she was pissed to say the least. So was Mike, and he defended Cassandra saying she smelt of booze because it was stuff that has a strong scent (flavor?) and he wouldn't have got in the vehicle with her if he thought she was drunk. They say I (or who ever, as they don't know it was me) is a bad teammate and should never have done it. Cassandra and Mike heard it was Jackie that called it in and were calling her all kinds of names, meanwhile the other guys sitting there (John, Kevin) defended Jackie, saying the stories didn't add up, its all hearsay rumors, yada yada. We would get the subject dropped and then someone else would walk up to Cassandra and say "Hey, I heard..." and set her off on a rant again, acting like a child, giving the guy that started spreading the rumor the finger behind his back and just generally being a child. So the talk of the day was that she had the cops called on her, even tho at the end of it, it was all moot because nothing came of it. Jackie and Kevin knew I was calling the cops and encouraged it, Jackie even took the picture of her licence plate number so I could give to the cops. And Jackie said she would've called it in had I not. And Kevin never said it was me when Cassandra was raging about it. I'm not sure if John knew the truth or not. Jackie wasn't there to defend herself, but we tried to steer the blame away from her and put it all to hearsay rumor. Before everyone was gone, the rumor had shifted that I was the one that called it in, but I denied it.

So, AITA for calling the cops and being a bad teammate?

If you truly felt that she was a danger to herself and others, then no! U r NOT the a**hole. However, where I struggle with, is that u felt very strongly about this, enough to call the cops, but not enough to stand up for what u did. You could have said that “yes, I did it! I was genuinely concerned for the 2 of yours safety, as well as other people on the road. We asked u to not drive, we asked Mike to not get in the car with u. Both of u made those decisions and would have to reap the consequences of them. But what if there had been an accident? What if someone had been killed? What if a baby had died or been seriously injured? And all because no one said anything. At least I tried and did what I could to the general public around u and ur vehicle, who didn’t get a say in the matter, but had to deal with it all the same. If u don’t want to have the cops called on u, don’t drive drunk and/or high!”
I’m also super curious about how they even found out the cops were called, if they never found her.
