This Airline Is Throwing Out Their Heels And Skirt Uniform And Introducing A New ‘Comfort’ Look
People who have never even stepped foot in a plane know how female flight attendants look. We’ve seen it in movies and on social media so we have an understanding of what their image consists of. They are always in a uniform that is a two-piece suit with a tight blazer and a short pencil skirt. They often wear a scarf around their necks and a pilot cap. And for shoes, they have to wear heels.
Flight attendant uniforms are constantly criticized for being uncomfortable, sexualizing and painful. They are not safe to wear in planes having in mind that sometimes accidents do happen and in a case of an emergency, high heels and tight skirts would definitely be an obstacle.
So Ukrainian airlines SkyUp decided they will be the first to update this image and designed a uniform that is still a two-piece suit, but the pencil skirt is substituted by loose pants and the heels are swapped for sneakers.

Being a flight attendant is not an easy job. You have to be on your feet for long hours on a not-so-stable surface as you are in the air. Flight attendants have to deal with emergencies and try to control the passengers in accordance with the safety protocols. For women to have to do that in a tight skirt constricting movement and painful high heels would seem very unreasonable; however, it’s a reality in most airlines.

SkyUp is a young but huge company, so it’s no wonder they are the ones who are initiating the change in the uncomfortable flight attendant attire

But the young budget airline company SkyUp is not afraid to get rid of the classical image of a female flight attendant. In their July news release, the company introduced what the new uniforms symbolize to them: “The uniform embodies the idea of movement. The form is created for active, bold, bright; those who do not like superfluous officialdom, but appreciate style; reacts quickly, acts in a balanced manner, accepts challenges and finds a way out of any situation. These are clothes for those who are open to new things, those who love travel and life.”

The new uniform consists of a bright orange blazer, loose high-waisted pants, Nike sneakers and the iconic flight attentant scarf pinned on the shoulder

Passengers will be met by flight attendants with the new uniform beginning on October 22, 2021. What they will see is a look created by Ukrainian fashion designers. The GUDU brand developed the bright orange suit which reflects the main color of the airline and the GUNIA PROJECT perfected the print for the silk scarf, which is symbolic for flight attendants.
The suit is loose-fitting, the pants are high-waisted, and the sneakers are the Nike Air Max 720, which are known to be comfortable. Also, the flight attendants will not be required to wear tight buns, which, as most of us have experienced, can cause scalp pains, but instead, the company suggests a variety of other hairstyles.

The new uniform represents movement and is created for active and bold people, ditching the sexualized image of a female flight attendant

Marianna Grigorash, Head of SkyUp Airlines Marketing Department, said “Times have changed, women have changed, so in contrast to the conservative classics, heels, red lipstick and a bun, a new, more modern and comfortable image of a ‘champion’ has appeared. Freedom, natural beauty, individuality, no patterns and sneakers in which everyone ‘would like to fly.’”

The new uniform will be launched on October 22 and there are plans to update the men’s uniform too

It is no secret that flight companies benefited from their flight attendants being beautiful and showing off their figure. They often must wear makeup and their hair has to be pristine. But Marianna Grigorash claims, “We realized that our female flight attendants didn’t want to be seen as ‘sexualized and playful.’”
This is a huge change not only in how flight attendants will be viewed from now on, but it is a big shift in mentality as Eastern European countries like Ukraine put a lot of emphasis on women’s appearance and how it should be, so this drastic switch is very impressive.

People who have seen the new uniforms were applauding the airlines for taking care of their female employees; however, not everyone thought that the suit was so stylish. In matters of taste, there can be no disputes, as they say, but what is your verdict? Would you be happy to wear such a uniform and do you think that more companies should follow SkyUp’s example? Let us know in the comments!
People were loving the idea of changing the uniform to a more comfortable one, but not all agreed on if they like the design too much

They already are. Have a look at CEOs. A lot wears expensive sneakers
Load More Replies...This is great! Pencil skirts and heels look so uncomfortable, especially for long hours and being on your feet
That is exactly why I will never ever where high heels! Shoes with an inch or less heel with good arch support are the best so you can RUN if you have to!
Load More Replies...I know people said they look like prison uniforms, but I kind of like the orange
Well usually the uniforms are the same color with the company's colours and actually i like it too!
Load More Replies...The main role of a flight attendant, albeit one they hope they never need to do, is to ensure the safety of passengers in an emergency. This looks like a much easier outfit to do that in. Probably easier to stay on your feet in unexpected turbulence too.
I know one flight attendant, she was complaining about this for years, because heels destroyed her legs.
I hope more will follow! That's a great outfit! It's not only that the previous ones are sexist clothes designed mostly by men but they are also impractical and can be dangerous in an emergency situation! Plane protocols change all the time and I'm surprised that nobody thought that this should be taken under consideration about the attendants' safety!!! I hope they also ban the rule of the stupid hair Ban that gives you headache and the identical make up that makes them all look the same like they are not individuals with different personalities!!!
It’s insane the amount of work flight attendants are expected to do in a skirt and heels. For safety during an emergency at the very least the shoes should have been changed out years ago
I think the person who brought up Mad Men was spot on - flight attendants' uniforms are a relic of an era when flying was very expensive and luxurious. It seems ridiculous to have them observe the same level of formality at a time when flying is cheaper than trains and a mid-flight snack is a sad little sandwich.
Besides it apparently being comfortable (finally) I think it also looks SO good!
To those who hate that it is orange: in case of emergency it is much easier to find a bright orange flight attendant, than a black or blue one :/ Only fashion critics around...
I like it, but a pocket-square option would be good. Also, those sneakers with their elevated soles might not suit every foot, though the idea is good in theory. A choice of more than one kind of white Nike sneaker would make sense. Overall the look is great, and it's nice that it's not sexualized, but still smart-looking.
Was about time... Planes can be uncomfortable and quite chilly, I'd want some comfy pants!
The scarf isn’t a good idea, it could dip into food, get in the way giving first aid etc. The rest looks nice and after the last couple of years I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if they were in jammies and slippers.
There are plenty of flat, comfortable shoes that still look good. White sneakers are not among those.
I like the uniform, I like orange, but I do think it's too much orange. The pants should be a different colour than the top.
It's about time - but the design still seems off. For one, aren't those pointless scarves going to flap around and get in the way?
rana naveed shut the f*****g hell up nobody f*****g cares about you🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
I'm loving the idea. I even like the bright color. But I honestly think scarf will get in the way and possibly end up being more tucked-up.
K but those suits are comfortable and flattering only in girls with a maximum b cup she no thighs. That's probably the point try wasting a c or d cup in that blazer
I first saw the long Scarf I thought for security: Tying someones hands, Gag, etc.
Icelandic airline play had their uniforms out this summer so not the first no, but good to see more airlines taking it up.
LOL, budget airlines have been doing this for years. I've seen plenty of female flight attendants in pants, sneakers and a company polo in the last 10 years.
