The Opposite Of Design Fails: 50 Of The Most Brilliant Design Ideas That People Have Ever Shared In This Online Group (New Pics)
Over the years, we at Bored Panda have released quite a few pieces on subpar design. And while these publications are incredibly fun to prepare and scroll through (just take a look at this one), we need to balance them out a little. After all, not every designer is an incompetent 3-year-old. Some of them are 4... light-years ahead of the competition.
There's a subreddit that features high-quality images of interesting designs, including architectural, graphic, industrial, furniture, and product design, and even though we already covered it once, there are so many gems on it, we need to do a follow-up. From a restaurant half-sunken into the sea to a suitcase that can measure its own weight, continue scrolling and check out the best that human ingenuity has to offer.

We, regular users, usually see just the finished product. But there's so much more that goes into actually creating them. To learn more about design, we contacted Nicole Phillips, who has been working in the design industry since 2005 and has a background in fine arts and advertising. Phillips specializes in logo design, branding, and package design for food & beverage, beauty, health, and interior design clients, and for each project, her work is unique and never linear.
"The design process requires research, experimentation, and even a bit of psychology," Phillips told Bored Panda. "When I feel frustrated with the process, I remind myself to take a step back, have fun and play. It's those moments of play and experimentation that usually create the best results, but it's those hours of research that help build the foundation for the final result."
"My clients are not paying me for my time, they are paying me for my many years of experience, so if I am able to complete the design process in 5 hours rather than 5 weeks, this is a sign of my years of experience and knowledge, this is valuable," she added.

Trying to determine whether or not a particular design is good, many turn to Dieter Rams and his '10 commandments.' According to Rams, good design is innovative, makes a product useful, is aesthetic, makes a product understandable, is unobtrusive, is honest, is long-lasting, is thorough down to the last detail, is environmentally friendly, and involves as little design as possible.
Nicole Phillips agrees with the German design legend.
"Good design includes a good balance of function, form, and fun," Phillips said. "The user shouldn't have to try too hard to get what they need from the design. Good design isn't just aesthetics, it should communicate well and push boundaries a bit. Good design solves problems."
To paraphrase Don Draper from Mad Men, it's simple but significant.

This is a great idea - and Kelvinator (I think) did something similar in the 1950s. The problem is that it takes up a HUGE amount of space in the kitchen. The doors need so much space that it's not very practical.

Good idea but I would install it upside down so water or dirt wont get in as easy.
Good idea, but nothing new: If you are ever in Cochem, Germany, take a tour of the castle. They will show you a door that has something similar already since hundreds of years ago, also for the intoxicated. Could be on many other old castles, but this one I'm sure of.
It was more common as a light at the door was not common. This way it is easier to find the lock in the dark. I'm sure it's not just castles.

This is not new. Existed already in the 16th century. One of the houses in the Vlaaikensgang (Antwerp, Belgium) has a door lock with this system.
Sounds like the designers thought that good idea should be replicated.

I had a friend that wanted to do this with car doors...except he thought a funnel guiding the key into the door would be good. Of course, he was drunk at the time. :)

Why can't we just have a front door that's on the same wavelength as our car doors so that they open if they sense our fob on us? Hands free opening, now that would be nice when our hands are full of groceries!
I hate the term “elderly” it sounds as though they’re decrepit. The word “Elder” is okay but add the LY to it and it changes drastically.
I have a sight challenged neighbor. Her lock plate is scratched up. This is a good fix.

There was a keyhole similar to this on an old monastery near where I used to live. Obviously old style lock and key but it had been there hundreds of years. The Monks liked their homebrew too much haha

Please add - Japanese toilets. The flushing tank has a water spout with a soap dispenser, so people can wash their hands in the toilet stall- and sudsy water flushed the toilet

Theres a faucet at the Cheyenne mountain zoo hippo and penguin exhibit restrooms that are three in one, it's a horizontal faucet, one part dispenses water, the middle part dispenses soap, and the other is air dry
I saw quite a few 2 in 1 recently in the airport, shaped a bit like airplane: middle part provides water, and the side parts work as air dry. There is no rounded plane shapes, simply the style (middle tube, and two tubes to the side from the middle of water one)

Why did jesus supposedly heal some lepers in the stories, but he didn't cure the disease leprosy itself? Some people still suffer with leprosy to this day. Was he incompetent? Evil? Just wants certain people to suffer? Science has largely cured the disease leprosy. Thank scientists! Can you name a disease god has cured? Science has actually cured a number of diseases. Do you have any evidence that any gods even exist? How is jesus god's only son? Aren't we all supposedly created in god's image? Didn't god create Adam and Eve? The bible says pray for anything you want in god's name & god will give it to you. Can you please pray to regrow the limbs of an amputee? Petitionary prayer fails.
