Everybody deserves to be healthy because being full of energy means leading a good life. However, health becomes a real issue if you have to pay your weight in gold whenever you need to go to the hospital.

When US Senator Bernie Sanders asked his Twitter followers what the most absurd medical bill they’ve ever received was, the floodgates opened. The stories were shocking, to say the least. So here is a compilation of the most ridiculous medical bills that Americans were presented with. Get ready for your jaw to drop and your eyes to pop because some of these are unbelievable. Upvote the bills you found the most shocking, leave us a comment and remember to share with your friends.

Some of these bills reached tens-of-thousands and even hundreds-of-thousands of bills. I’ll be honest with you, when I saw them I genuinely thought I was either seeing things or that somebody accidentally added a couple of extra zeroes.

The harsh reality is that healthcare is incredibly expensive in the United States, and plenty of people always wonder: “Why?” Investopedia explains that healthcare in the US is “about twice as expensive as it is in any other developed country.” However, despite the cost, the US healthcare system is only the 37th in quality, according to the World Health Organization.

I hear ya. My bill for a UTI was $6,000. They didn't even diagnose me. I walked and told them what was wrong what antibiotic I needed. What am I paying $6,000 for?

Also had a kidney stone. Went to the emergencyroom of a hospital in Portugal. They drugged me up . Did an ultrasound. Analysed my urine to determine it was a stone indeed (plus a bladder infection). Prescribed painkillers, antibiotics, pills to protect my stomach from the antibiotics and charged me 15 Euros (!) for the drugs. That was it!

Honestly, you should be suing them for failure to diagnose and treat a fairly simple ailment.

I suspected I had kidney stones, went for an echo. They found gallbladder stones and bladder stones and benign prostate hypertrophy. So I had my gallbladder laparoscopically removed, and in a second procedure bladder stones removed and a Thulium laser transurethral prostatectomy. My Hospital bill was : $ 0.00 That is what Dutch Universal Healthcare means!

And you cannot imagine what it's like trying to fight these bills. Once they've charged you, they don't back down. It can take months, years and even then, you are unlikely to win, and if you do, you still have all the surcharges added to the original bill, and your entire credit destroyed because in the meantime, the bill has been sent to a collection agency. It's criminal what they do with healthcare in the USA.

After ~2 years, your credit should be back to normal, and the charge drops off after 7. Idk what happens if the collectors keep selling the debt to other companies, though.

My husband has kidney stones. The first time he passed one he had to have an overnight stay in hospital, and had morphine. Every year he has a scan and/or x-ray. All for free. Thank goodness we live in the UK.

My husband had a kidney stone as big a 22 bullet. The threaded a sonic blaster up thew hi penis and blasted it to pieces and grabbed the larger bit in a little basket and pulled them out, (all while he was sleeping), and he passed the smaller bits. Yes he was still in pain, but it settled after a while. I can't believe the health system over in America. Move to Australia it is free.

joi

hope you didn't use the painkillers, need to learn to drink H2O constantly, asshole, instead of running to the hospital for every little owie. a little education and self reliance will save you $$. or maybe you'll become instantly addicted and need to be acutely hospitalized so they can carefully titrate your meds. It would be a real shame if you felt a twinge of discomfort ~~ you're privileged and have insurance, so aren't you guaranteed a pain-free existence?

This happened to me! But they determined I was having muscle spasms. Drugged me up, sent me home. Then 1 night later my neighbor thought I was being murdered because of the pain of passing a kidney stone.

(1/2) Several years ago, my kidneys shut down on me completely. I was in the ER for hours getting all sorts of tests while they tried to figure out what was going on. I ended up being in the hospital for 19 days. I had three different nephrologists during my stay (they work for a week on, two off) and dozens of nurses. I had a medical social worker come by several times and once saw a psychiatrist. I had dialysis seven and a half times. (That's where they hook you up to a machine that cleans your blood as it passes through the machine. It takes a few hours each time, on a very expensive machine.) The "and a half" comes in because my emergency shunt wore out partway through my stay and favours were traded so that a doctor worked through his lunch break to install a more permanent shunt. I had biopsies, daily checking of vitals, probably a dozen blood tests. I had morphine for much of the first week. I had a catheter so they could monitor my urine. All of this cost me: $0

(2/2) Tell me that I pay in taxes all you like, I don't mind. If I lived in the USA I probably would have delayed going to the hospital until it was too late, and died. Or if not, then I would be saddled with a debt in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. And if this had never happened to me, I would still gladly pay those taxes to prevent others from having to choose between dying or living in poverty. The US government spends 15% of its GDP on healthcare vs 10% in Canada and you still pay twice as much per-capita spending because your system is wildly inefficient. Something needs to change.

Husband's kidney stones were completely cured for under that price. There are these drs called "urologists" who fix kidney stones. He has Anthem through work, total bill was still $4k, which we claimed on our taxes.

Kidney stones has to be removed!! like wtf. In my country nothing like this would ever happen. for those amounts of money you all pay you can get really serious surgeries done and plastic surgeries etc.

No matter the country you are in, small kiddney stones pass by them selves. There is no need for the risk of surgery for it.

Harvard economist David Cutler told Investopedia that the main reason why US healthcare costs are sky-high is this: “The administrative costs of running our healthcare system are astronomical. About one-quarter of healthcare cost is associated with administration, which is far higher than in any other country.”

What’s more, the cost of medical drugs in the United States is far higher than in other developed countries. Meanwhile, American doctors are afraid of litigation, so they practice what’s called ‘defensive medicine’ — they order lots of different tests even when they know what the diagnosis is.

The ambulances in the US are insane. I have flat out refused to get into one when necessary because I couldn't afford the bill. Asked my friend to take me to the hospital from the Urgent Care instead of the ambulance they had "called" for me. Luckily, she is no stranger to the US Healthcare Mafia.

Pharmaceuticals are big business and could care less if your life is at risk because you cannot afford medications. Cost very little to make these treatments compared to the bill you get. They justify this on the bases of "research". This is another vile industry just like insurance. No compassion

Going out-of-network without patient consent and later slamming them with the bill when insurance won't field it is a practice commonly called "balance billing" or "surprise billing". Some states have been taking measures against this. I expect I probably can't paste links, but there are a lot of various initiatives around the US to get laws passed to prevent this. Look for your state and the phrase "balance billing", and if yours has no protections in place, I strongly advise you help petition your lawmakers to rectify it.
