Everybody deserves to be healthy because being full of energy means leading a good life. However, health becomes a real issue if you have to pay your weight in gold whenever you need to go to the hospital.

When US Senator Bernie Sanders asked his Twitter followers what the most absurd medical bill they’ve ever received was, the floodgates opened. The stories were shocking, to say the least. So here is a compilation of the most ridiculous medical bills that Americans were presented with. Get ready for your jaw to drop and your eyes to pop because some of these are unbelievable. Upvote the bills you found the most shocking, leave us a comment and remember to share with your friends.

Again, to say medicare for all or universal healthcare is bad, go swallow a bullet. Good people with decent jobs who have been law abiding citizens their whole lives shouldn't be burdened or forced with things like this.

And people who lose their children but have to pay a fortune should not be burdened with that cost due to privatized insurance and medical.

What ? That's the most disgraceful, humiliating, shameful, insulting, disgusting and shittiest treatment any insurance company can give to any responsible client as regards issues on a stillborn infant. Sure the company is proud to be American. Get what you deserve bunch of financial losers. Shame on you. And you Americans I hope you get the support from Europeans who receive free medical treatments (we pay our taxes though). It's a shame you are sometimes prouder to invest your taxes in killing foreigners abroad rather than taking care of your own citizens. And I apologise if you feel offended.

It is purely POLITICAL. Either there is comprehensive healthcare for all - or there is not. In practically all ways, it seems, are the less financially sound individuals free to be screwed over by Corporate America. That is far removed from being a democracy.

It's sad and it sucks. We're still getting bills 8 months after our baby died in the NICU even though we added her to our policy. I know someone whose insurance wouldn't pay because their baby didn't live past midnight. Like, seriously... where's the love?

Id row

There have been instances where babies were born with health issues and insurance wouldn't pay for their care calling it a 'pre-existing condition'. Until they outlaw legalized bribery, aka lobbying, the healthcare system will never change. All Obamacare did was ensure that people get fined for being too poor to afford their scam insurance, insurance that wanted over 13 grand in deductibles before they'd pay 40%. I got fined $1,800 for not paying for it. It's legalized extortion, plain and simple.

It's horrible. I got a quote, $8000, for a dental implant in Arkansas, I traveled to Albania (Balkan area in EU) and had the same brand of implant plus one filling and cleaning for 200 Euro ($220) in a very clean and modern dental office where the dentist actually had his fellowship in the US. Another story, I need an eye surgery called Cross-linking for my irregular cornea shape, quoted $10,000 in Little Rock, AR, my insurance (blue cross BlueShield that my employer pays $550 monthly for it) covers only $400 of it (out of 10,000). This microsurgery cost $200 in Asia and under $400 in Spain. My third story, I have prescribed a tablet (Xeljanz). In US costs $4800 per pack and I need a few packs for six months, no insurance coverage. I spoke to a friend in Irland, he says the same brand costs $1100 in Irland but insurance will cover $1000 of it. then I called a friend lives in Moscow, Russia, he said it cost under $500 in Moscow and insurance will not cover it here.

The US needs to cut the budget for the military, at least, in half, pull troops out of all of these European countries that get "free" health care and prescriptions. If they want to keep at it, let them do it themselves. The money can be used for the US to get "free" health care, etc........

Monika Soffronow
Community Member
1 year ago (edited)

As usual, things are much more complicated than that. But you are right, the US would do well to cut the budget for the military in half, and think much more before it deploys military in third world countries, causing civilian casualties that far outnumber military ones. The shareholders of the so-called 'Defence Industry' are the only real winners.

Applied for health insurance in October of '04. Coverage was supposed to start in November. We kept calling and asking they said it was " being processed". Long story short, some ninny quit their job and left a bunch of papers in their desk so the coverage didn't start till January. I got pregnant sometime in Jan and the doctors would not accept / company didn't cover and we paid $5000 up front just got pre natal care. Later, some was refunded but it caused so much stress. A baby is not a " condition".!!!

The harsh reality is that healthcare is incredibly expensive in the United States, and plenty of people always wonder: “Why?” Investopedia explains that healthcare in the US is “about twice as expensive as it is in any other developed country.” However, despite the cost, the US healthcare system is only the 37th in quality, according to the World Health Organization.

About one-quarter of healthcare cost is associated with administration, which is far higher than in any other country.”

What’s more, the cost of medical drugs in the United States is far higher than in other developed countries. Meanwhile, American doctors are afraid of litigation, so they practice what’s called ‘defensive medicine’ — they order lots of different tests even when they know what the diagnosis is.

Going out-of-network without patient consent and later slamming them with the bill when insurance won't field it is a practice commonly called "balance billing" or "surprise billing". Some states have been taking measures against this. I expect I probably can't paste links, but there are a lot of various initiatives around the US to get laws passed to prevent this. Look for your state and the phrase "balance billing", and if yours has no protections in place, I strongly advise you help petition your lawmakers to rectify it.
