And you'll notice that the "pull yourselves up by your bootstraps/socialism is evil" crowd don't pay their medical bills out of pocket. They buy into a system where the healthy pay the costs of people who get sick - insurance.

This just makes me feel depressed, the fact that a young man has to file bankruptcy at age 21 because your government blows half a trillion dollars on its military. I am so lucky that In my country I have access to good healthcare that is payed for by the government.

I also broke my neck in a car crash, I also owed an absurd amount for "medical bills" and I also filed for medical bankruptcy before I even finished my first semester in college.

I read recently that around 60% of bankruptcies in the US are the result of medical bills.

In Australia, we pay 1.5% of our income in a medicare levy. It gives you access to all medical procedures in hospitals and most GP bills, tests etc. You may not need it when you are young, except for accidents and maternity, but as you grow older, things change. Medical bankruptcy, unheard of. You can elect to pay for private health, have a reduction in your levy and have access to private hospitals. It is a choice. No one is left behind. We also have subsidised medication via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

All you can do in that situation is to file medical bankruptcy. I has a bill so large once that the hospital actually asked me to file so they wouldn't have to go through the process of trying to bill forever.

That is such a horrible thing. Outrages medical bill and also having to deal with learning with a broken neck. Come live here in Australia you would be a 100% covered, even if you have private medical insurance I am sure you would have to pay a smaller amount than that. I hope you are getting better.

Spouse had infected tooth/facial swelling. We went in telling them we had no insurance at the time, so we needed that to be kept in mind throughout our visit. Many doctors and many tests later, we were debating doctor on his desire for yet a SECOND CT scan before he could prescribe treatment - Husband asked the doctor what the treatment would likely be - Pretty sure it was an infection so antibiotics would likely be the outcome. So we said NO THANK YOU to the 2nd CT scan and asked him to just prescribe the antibiotics. ER said to come back in a couple days but when asked to, DON'T sign anything so we wouldn't be charged - They refused to even let him see the anyone for the follow-up unless we signed the papers so we did ... ER bill was over $5000 which we could not afford to pay, at all - ALL just to be able to get relatively inexpensive prescription for antibiotics.

The US needs to cut the budget for the military, at least, in half, pull troops out of all of these European countries that get "free" health care and prescriptions. If they want to keep at it, let them do it themselves. The money can be used for the US to get "free" health care, etc........

Some of these bills reached tens-of-thousands and even hundreds-of-thousands of bills. I’ll be honest with you, when I saw them I genuinely thought I was either seeing things or that somebody accidentally added a couple of extra zeroes.

The harsh reality is that healthcare is incredibly expensive in the United States, and plenty of people always wonder: “Why?” Investopedia explains that healthcare in the US is “about twice as expensive as it is in any other developed country.” However, despite the cost, the US healthcare system is only the 37th in quality, according to the World Health Organization.

Harvard economist David Cutler told Investopedia that the main reason why US healthcare costs are sky-high is this: “The administrative costs of running our healthcare system are astronomical. About one-quarter of healthcare cost is associated with administration, which is far higher than in any other country.”

What’s more, the cost of medical drugs in the United States is far higher than in other developed countries. Meanwhile, American doctors are afraid of litigation, so they practice what’s called ‘defensive medicine’ — they order lots of different tests even when they know what the diagnosis is.

Aren"t the ER acțions/operation free of change? Or ER is considered as privat hospitals? You are not paying taxes in that country, to have state hospitals? Just wondering... anyway, strange medical system.

The ambulances in the US are insane. I have flat out refused to get into one when necessary because I couldn't afford the bill. Asked my friend to take me to the hospital from the Urgent Care instead of the ambulance they had "called" for me. Luckily, she is no stranger to the US Healthcare Mafia.

Pharmaceuticals are big business and could care less if your life is at risk because you cannot afford medications. Cost very little to make these treatments compared to the bill you get. They justify this on the bases of "research". This is another vile industry just like insurance. No compassion

My wife had endometriosis. Her doctor worked with our insurance to make certain the procedure was covered. We called ourselves early on, and just before going under the knife and was assured we had coverage. We started getting bills in the mail from the doctor asking for the full costs of procedure. We contacted the insurance company and they informed us that there is a process of sending a formal letter with a specific question, and they would answer within so many business days. Their first several replies were 'coverage exhausted' without much else. Every month another letter came asking for payment in full, and every month we got the same short answer from the insurance company. Eventually we learned the policy I was paying into for my family at a steep price every check had an annual total inpatient coverage of $1,500. That's fifteen hundred dollars; which was nowhere near the total cost. The company I worked for was owned by my insurance company.
