This Online Community Is Sharing Pics Of Absolute Units, And It’s Hard To Believe Things Can Get This Big
"Absolute unit" refers to jokes made on the Internet in which people caption images of large objects or beings with a variation on the phrase, "In awe at the size of this lad. Absolute unit." I know, this explanation sounds a bit clunky, but it's the best one I came up with. However, I assure you that the pictures are way better than my description of them. Whether it's a 67lb cabbage or a squirrel who has eaten 3 jack-o'-lanterns, I bet you didn't even know things can get so huge! Eventually, the meme got so popular, it even spawned a subreddit of the same name. And it's an absolute unit. Here are some of its top posts.

The Ardennes Is One Of The Oldest Breeds Of Draft Horse, Dating Back To Ancient Rome
Internet meme database 'Know Your Meme' considers 2017 to be the origin of 'absolute unit'. Then, Twitter user @mrreptoid uploaded a picture of British hotelier David Morgan-Hewitt posing with the Queen of England and captioned it "In awe at the size of this lad. Absolute unit," referring to Morgan-Hewitt. The tweet gained over 3,500 retweets and 13,000 likes but the account it was shared from eventually got suspended for unknown reasons.
This Horse Is An Absolute Unit
The meme really took off on April 9th, 2018, when The Museum of English Rural Life tweeted a photograph of a ram along with the caption "Look at this absolute unit". Within 72 hours, the tweet, which was submitted by the museum's program manager Adam Koszary, accumulated over 98,000 likes and 27,600 retweets.
The following day, the museum posted a follow-up tweet, featuring a photograph of a pink index card containing information about the ram. Then, on April 10th, The Museum of English Rural Life published an article titled "The History Behind an Absolute Unit," which provided additional information about the ram.
His Destiny Was To Become A Unit
A week later, MIT Technology Review tweeted an article about the world's biggest airplane calling it an "absolute unit" and Elon Musk responded by saying, "I'm an absolute unit too" with a picture of the before-mentioned Museum of English Rural Life ram picture. His response gained over 6,000 retweets and 60,400 likes in just a single day, cementing 'absolute unit' in Internet history.
Interestingly, that same day, Twitter user @Bryson_M dared Musk by saying, "Make this your profile pic" and the business magnate almost immediately changed his profile picture to the ram, adding the words "absolūt unit" in his bio. After noticing the change, The Museum of English Rural Life changed their profile picture to Elon Musk and renamed its account to The Muskeum of Elonglish Rural Life. To top it all off, Elon Musk has reportedly hired Koszary, the man responsible for the viral tweet about a giant sheep, to be Tesla’s social media manager.

“Shrek" (1994-2011) Was A Merino Sheep From New Zealand. He Escaped And Avoided Shearing For Six Years By Hiding In A Cave
Where are those people who downvoted me when I said a sheep looks like it will make a great sweater?
Probably off somewhere else telling people that chess is racist, like the cretins they are.
Load More Replies...Wasn't this the same sheep who fended off wolf attacks because they couldn't chew through his wool to get to the meat? :)
There are idiots who think shearing sheep is cruel but if it's left to grow like this it can cause all sorts of dangerous problems. Running away and hiding in a cave for six years is pretty funny though.
IT IS GOOD TO PEEL YOUR SHEEPS. PLEASE PEEL THE SHEEPS.
Load More Replies...So, we are all going to ignore the fact that its name is Shrek?
Also this poor guy was attacked by wolves, but they couldn't penetrate the floof enough to actually hurt him.
I read about this. Wolves tried to attack the sheep but the couldn't get through the giant layer of woll.
No way! There are no wolves in Australia...There are dingoes though.
Load More Replies...@sarah and @k1ddkanuck vegans do not use or consume any animal product. They will not eat meat, dairy, eggs, fish, honey. They will not wear any animal fibers (wool, alpaca, silk, cashmere, camel, mohair) or any product made with an animal hide (leather, suede). And, of course, they don't wear fur. Vegans belief system is animals are "sentient beings" and should not be used for food or otherwise exploited by humans. Personally, I don't believe in wearing fur for the sake of wearing fur--fur farms are horrible. However, fur as a by-product of food? No problem. Inuit people hunt seals for food and use their fur for coats. It's a win-win situation for them. The people walking around NYC in a mink coat? Yeah, I'd like to skin them and turn them into a coat for my dog. But that's just my opinion about it.
I agree with you @Teresa Taylor, fur farms are awful
Load More Replies...It was. It would have died, if it hadn't been found and finally sheared.
Load More Replies...Sheep originally had fleece that would stop growing naturally, apparently, until humans came along and started breeding them for more wool. They've now been bred to the point where they will end up strangled by their own fleece if not sheared periodically, I understand. I'm a knitter and I love a nice merino wool, but I think it's a shame the animals have been so over-bred. Like the smoosh-faced dogs or cats that can hardly breathe, sheep are another creature humans have messed up, heedless of their well-being. And yet they simply HAVE to be sheared today for their own well-being, even though they don't like it (like kids don't like haircuts). As the Yarn Harlot likes to say, "Behind every piece of yarn ever made is a p*ssed-off sheep!"
That’s interesting. Thank you for that information. Of COURSE humans f****d it up. The old ‘man has dominion over every living creature’ thing. Yet another reason the fable book is just a fable.
Load More Replies...Poor guy, however much he hates being sheared, it can't be comfortable to be that woolbound. Hope whoever took this picture managed to get him groomed. And the amount of wool that will come off of him will make quite a few sweaters!
@NomadusAureus thanks!! I stand corrected. Rhino horn is not bone, according to a google search it is keratin, similar to our fingernails. Sadly, poachers still murder these majestic animals just to saw off these horns. You'd think the park rangers would capture and remove the horns on a routine basis to save the animals from poachers. But, what do I know about wildlife conservation? (Not a thing!)
rhinos actually do need their horns, so you can't really remove them
Load More Replies...unless shearing is painful, I'm not sure hiding was in his best interest.
Let's show this picture to those "animal rights protectors" who say shearing is harmful for sheep. It looks like Shrek can barely move at this point.
I don't think that's what they say. Wild sheep obviously don't need shearing. Animals are bred for our consumption. We made them that way. The animal rights protectors would prefer that there were no sheep like this, and that we stop breeding them, not that we stop shearing the ones that are already here.
Load More Replies...Poor thing. Just shows that sheep are not naturally this way. Or it would have fallen off or not grown like that.

I know nothing about sheep but this actually looks kind of painful for him.. hope he's alright now and safe
he was actually suffering carrying around that much wool - too heavy & way too hot. a LOT of wool came off when he was finally sheared
The only reason he survived in the wild that long was because of that wool. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable that sheep was though

I think some of these animals are actually really that big, but yes, overfeeding is a problem. 🙃
Load More Replies...Maybe I'm getting old at 36, but the term "absolute unit" seems pretty stupid to me. I'm over it.
Most of the phrases people love using on the internet are annoying dumb crap.
Load More Replies...I wonder how many of these pictures were 'shopped. Also, clever camera angles can make things look larger than they really are.
In my humble but honest personal opinion, the pic of the grizzly bear in the field in front of the mountain range is entirely computer generated. Nothing about it looks real.

I wondered what the hell this was about because in my country calling someone a unit is saying they are stupid :D
Some of the comments made this the funniest BP article I've ever read. Well done everybody!
I never heard the term "absolute unit" until today. Clearly, the world of slang is leaving me behind; I only recently figured out what "It is what it is" means. I still don't know what a "meme" is. 😢
