Abandoned Dog Gets The Transformation Of A Lifetime When 6 Pounds Of Mats Are Removed
When San Antonio, Texas police officers found Hamish the Cocker Spaniel he was unidentifiable. The crew was first alerted of the spaniel by a call that there was an animal struggling in the middle of the road and were shocked when they came across a dirty, wooly, abandoned creature. Hamish was immediately sent to the San Antonio Animal Care Services to receive medical care.
In September the shelter posted the pup’s story on social media and caught the attention of local rescue group Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin and San Antonio

The neglected pup hiding underneath weighed only 12 – 13lbs, when he should weigh over 20lbs, and was suffering from health problems
Hamish underwent dental surgery to remove any bad teeth and lost most of them. According to the Cocker Spaniel Rescue, an adult dog has up to 42 teeth. The abandoned dog was left with 11 after dental surgery. His lack of teeth led to more problems.
“No doubt about it, his previous humans failed him. He still needs a bit of a touch-up, but you can tell how much better he already feels! He is now a CSRA kid and will be getting the medical care he needs to get him ready to find his new forever home. Welcome to the family, Hamish!”
Hamish needed to gain weight and without the ability to chew well this was a struggle
With a diet of soft food and weight gaining supplements, he is on the way to recovery
Hamish’s low body weight combined with the cool temperatures in Central Texas means lots of sweaters
Hamish – “what is this thing you call grass?”
He even has a baby foster sister who he loves dearly
Having fun on an air mattress at the foster home
Hamish is currently in a foster home but is looking for a permanent family to love him

Share on FacebookPoor little thing, it's great they found him and helped him, though. I'm sure he will find his new family soon, it's hard not to fall in love with this grumpy-looking furry face!
Yes, i really despise the ugly inhabitants of this planet, mankind (ha the irony) really doesn't deserve that name, all i seem to see these days is animal abuse and child abuse stories, my already depleted soul dies a little bit everytime i see a dog liek this.
Load More Replies...The dejected look on his face is heartbreaking. He probably has never had anyone love him or take care of him. I'm glad this became a success story. ❤❤❤❤
What's even sadder is that an adult dog would need to be "taken care of, especially this way. That an animal is bred to such a position that their own hair can kill him is a big part of the problem. Humans breeding dogs into fluffs of adorableness that can't survive without a tremendous amount of physical care is abominable to me. An adult dog should be a partner to be happy, like any adult creature. It's not a baby, nor a child. He should have been taken care of as a puppy. He should have had a good set of humans to live with as an adult, with them caring for him, and hopefully something he can do for them.
Load More Replies...I love cocker spaniels, but I don't have one because I know how much upkeep is required. People really should do their research before getting a dog. It's a huge responsibility not just a cute accessory.
My family always had cocker spaniels when i was growing up, really all they need is a good brush every day and they are fine, regardless of what the article says this would of been years more than months of neglect, the bastards who did this deserve a painful death.
Load More Replies...It's so so sad but also amazing how an animal can go through all that and STILL find it in them to be sweet and loving to humans. I know it's been said millions of times but WE. DO. NOT. DESERVE. DOGS!!!
The real cause of this issue is immoral people who breed dogs for characteristics that make them so utterly dependent on modern human civilization. Who would breed a dog that could become so matted?! Don't buy dog breeds. Buy a mutt for a much higher change of having a healthy and happy dog. A dog breed is nothing more than a collection of inbred traits. On a side note, don't ever say "forever home". It's just annoying to the most people who think.
Oh the bastards who let this dog get in this state, i wish cancer of the eyes on them. It kills me inside when i see dogs left to get like this, they need love and care and this beautiful boy clearly didn't experience any. It hurts me so much to see animals like this, i wish i could rescue every single one. I'm so, so happy he was found and shown love and care and a f****n good haircut. I would adopt him in a heartbeat if i could but i can't sadly. I'm sure he will find the right family and have the life every dog deserves. To all involved in the rescue, you are heroes and angels and i can't thank you enough, i will be donating on payday. I wish i was rich and i could send you a big pile of money.
the poor pups got grumpy looks now :c good thing that it found good people now
That first photo made me do a double take. Poor lil' guy. I'm glad he's safe now.
I never knew Cocker Spaniels could get like this. When I was a child, about 60 years ago, the next door neighbors had a Cocker Spaniel named Buffy. She never went to the groomer and never had a hair cut but looked just like a picture of a Cocker Spaniel in a book. Are Cocker Spaniels different these days?
It's too bad humans don't merit the same sort of care and attention we give to animals.
Poor little goober! He cleaned up nicely, though. His new life starts now.
Once again, I'm disgusted with human beings. I'm happy this poor pup is safe but there are so many other critters out there who end up like he was or worse.
