This Abandoned Dog Was Found Locked In A Cage At A Park, But It’s Not The Worst Part Of Her Story

Exactly a week ago on Friday, May 25th, some people, who were casually strolling around the park in Chillicothe, Ohio, found a locked wire cage with a beautiful white dog inside. But as if that weren’t enough, what they discovered after approaching the puppy was even more shocking – she was covered in hand-scrawled messages that were written all over her white fur in black permanent marker.

One side of her body read “FREE”, and the other said “I am a gift from God”. “Good home only” was written on her forehead. The people who found her didn’t wait long to call the police, and soon she was taken in by Ross County Humane Society who renamed her Marvella (a refference to the French word “merveille” which means “miracle”). They took responsibility to take care of the poor puppy and find her a new, loving home.

“Marvella was given a bath to remove as much of the permanent marker as possible, and spent the day in the office with the shelter staff getting lots of treats and attention,” wrote Ross County Humane Society in a Facebook post. “She has received her first round of vaccines and will be available for adoption later this week.”

Although the pup was really shy at first, she quickly brightened up and started to communicate with other dogs and the shelter staff. Since the story completely thrilled the internet, Marvella received tons of applications from her potential future families. A few days ago, Brittany May, one of the staff members of Ross County Humane Society, updated her Facebook post saying that Marvella has finally been adopted by a beautiful local family. “While this certainly isn’t the worst case we’ve ever seen and are thankful that Marvella was otherwise healthy, we hope that this serves as a reminder that there are always other options before abandonment,” writes May. “Marvella’s story is a happy one but thousands of other dogs across the county don’t have such a happy ending.”

Jeremy Rogers Did you not read the text?! It clearly says: a reference to the French word “merveille” which means “miracle”.

Every time something about an abandoned animal goes viral there's a Feeding Frenzy to adopt that animal while ignoring all the other ones that need good homes. I'm so glad this dog got a safe loving home. But why only the celebrity animals?

Unfortunately, people want to be a part of a story. I've noticed that at the shelter I volunteer at. The sob stories are the ones with interest.

I was coming to say that! I hate it when people make up foreign words just because they think it sounds cool. It's a cute dog, we don't need a fake romantic version of her name.

This isnt the worst thing I've seen done to abandoned dogs, but geesh, writing ON the dog is just weird. Get some cardboard and tape a note to the cage like a normal person would. At the least she looked well fed and cared for, someone just didnt want to go through the proper steps to re-home her :(

Anyone else think that maybe it was stolen/saved from a kill shelter and left in the cage for someone good to find...hence all the weird writing on it like FREE and gift from God...seems like some kind of twisted animal rights activist could have set this up...

Honestly, my first thought was that whoever did this was mentally ill and thought they were doing the right thing, especially since they only wrote nice things on her.

I think this woman should have to endure what this little girl had to!!! My daughter and I adopted 2 dogs from the humane society where we live, and it was totally obvious that the oldest was physically abused---I will never understand how people don't realize animals have the same kind of feelings as we do. They are both 10yrs and 9yrs old, and are large girls. LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!! Pointer mix and border collie/dalmation mix,

I was so happy that she was found, and adopted so quickly. I am an animal lover, and my daughter and I adopted 2 dogs from our humane society here in Waldorf, Md. If I could afford it I would have a houseful of adopted animals. I think the owner who did this horrible deed gets all she deserves. How would she like to be abandoned this way? Donna Newman

How can someone claim she is a gift from God and then abandon that ‘gift’? Doesn’t their God love all his creations? Dogs are intelligent and have emotions. They feel sadness, loneliness, fear, confusion. Having done rescue I know there are so many ways this could have ended tragically. The shelter could have been the kind that only gives strays 5 days, or the ones that euthanize when they run out of space. An even worse fate, she could have been taken by someone to be used as a bait dog to train fighting dogs (it happens more than you want to know. Please be careful when giving away or selling dogs - esp bully breeds). I hope Karma finds the people who left this little pup and kicks their a*s.

LOL No, humans are the only species that ascribe morality to actions, so saying that animals are some how morally superior to humans is hilarious, they don't have a "right" or "wrong" all animals have is survival and instincts. And animals most certainly do kill for fun, have you ever watched a cat toy with a mouse? Even a well-fed cat will kill but not eat an animal, its in their instincts to kill/play with a little life.
