After A Family Abandons Their Cat, He Walks Back 12 Miles Just To Be Rejected Again
Getting a pet is always a lot to consider. It’s a new addition to your family which requires as much attention as anyone else and that‘s not something that everyone can handle. Apparently, this is what happened with this family from North Carolina that decided to give away their 7-year-old cat, Toby.
He originally showed up at their home as a stray cat, and it all began in February when his owners noticed that he was not getting along with their other cats. That is when they decided to find him a new home, and they did – they gave him to another family about 12 miles away from them. Meanwhile, Toby had no idea why his beloved owners made such a decision to get rid of him, so he patiently walked those 12 miles back home… Just to be rejected again.
This time the decision was much more brutal. “The family he thought had loved him took him to a shelter and asked staff to euthanize him,” said The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County in a Facebook post. “The shelter called us at the SPCA to ask if we could take him in and help him find a new family. Of course, we said YES!”
Once this post appeared on social media, the word about Toby spread quickly. This is when Michelle Puckett from Raleigh, North Carolina, accidentally saw it too and left everything to go to the SPCA to meet this adorable cat. And it was the beginning of a new chapter in Toby’s life.
April 13th was this cat’s lucky day when he first met his new, and hopefully, forever family. “He has three new siblings (one feline and two human) and a cat-savvy mom to show him what a loving family is really like,” wrote Wake County SPCA on their Facebook. We couldn’t be happier to hear that Toby is finally happy!

Share on FacebookI never understand why people wants pet, when anytime can change his mind. The animals have rights for living too. I wondering if they have a child with a bad habit or something, they will give her/him in Institution? So sad that it could happened...
Me too... I know I have too many cats in my home. But it is still manageable. I found them in street. But when i heard someone want to adopt them, i always make a reason. I love them, it is like my kids. I just can't give it up.
Load More Replies...My heart hurts from he cruelty this beautiful baby has endured,i hope his life is filled with magic/love and lots and lots of cuddles, wishing the family that abandoned him a life of rejection and hopelessness.
There are so many people grieving and hurting because of lost/deceased animals... This lovely furbaby returns to them and they pay him back sending him to be euthanized... Thankfully he found a loving family!
Load More Replies...I always tell myself not to read such articles on BP, cause I cry like a beaver. I look at my own cats and can't comprehend how people can be so cruel. I'd never, NEVER give them away, no matter how much annoying they are at night running over me, or waking us up, or meowing for attention in the worst possible moment. I drop everything and care for them. I just can't... How can you toss away a friend who trusts you with all his furry heart? ;((
I think the exact same way as you, and that's why I always try to avoid these articles because they make me equal parts mad and sad. There are so many people who do NOT deserve the love of an animal. My husband and I have four cats and we're the type of guardians who can't get up if a cat is on our lap because we don't want to bother him/her.
Load More Replies...Oh that poor baby. And they asked to have him euthanized... This is pure cruelty. I hope he has a purrfect life with his new family.
This post has inspired me to reach out to my local SPCA and leave a message about elder, abandoned cats like Toby and if there are currently any I can adopt. I can't imagine how distressing it would be for a cat to be abandoned in its old age. I hate people like Toby's former owners. I hope the cats they choose to keep have better futures than Toby.
My current cat was 11 when we got him. It was supposed to be only temporary (for few weeks), until his owner - one old lady - comes back from hospital. Well, she didn't. Before she died, she was very worried about her cat, about what would happen to him (she didn't have any family). First weeks when cat was with us were tough - cat, as any animal this old, has already his habits and quirks. To be honest, one year later, he still sometimes acts on my nerves (he is VERY talkative cat - the most talkative cat I ever met, his previous owner must have talk with him very ofter - and he has very weird eating habits) but I'm glad he found new home with us.
Load More Replies...It's unbelievable all that poor Toby had to suffer & endure before he stumbled upon his lucky day. Finally a proper loving & nurturing home full of toys, attention & with lots of petting, cuddles, cozy naps with Mom. Yet even more than all this a real bond of trust & reliability is strongly being shaped very quickly. One can see it in his new pics. at home with the family! Great for all of you, especially dear Toby!
not only what i mentioned above but it also seems very obvious that sweet Toby's health care is being tended to on a very regular basis. Bless his new adoring, very loving & trustworthy family, comfortable safe & stable home. XXOO
Load More Replies...I have a cat who hates being pet, slinks away from you if you walk toward her, doesn't do much besides sleep and occasionally come out to hang with my other cat and eat and I still love her and would never abandon her in a million years, shame on this family for abandoning this beautiful boy, and I hope he can live out the rest of his life with in a loving forever home
That face when the new lady was holding him. He looked so sad, to be rejected again. Poor thing. I can't understand why anyone would do that. Get a pet then dump it/try to put it under. If you can't handle it, don't get the pet and then break its heart. Animals have feelings too, and it's likely Toby will never forget a family that dumped him and then tried to kill him after he walked 12 miles. 12 MILES. to get to them again. It broke MY heart to read this.
oh those f*****g a******s. "oh, an animal loved us enough to walk 12 miles to see us again? BETTER TRY ANd KILL HIM"
Frakin hell :/ I mean, this cat is 7 yo. It's not like you take a kitten and it destroys everything and you loose patience. You have a cat for 7 years and then suddenly what? You wake up one day and just think, oh let's get rid of the cat we had for years and that doesn't know any other life?! Seriously?!
Such a sad story for a beautiful cat who just need a loving home, with a family that he can love, they have so much love to give. With the many similar stories , hopefully there will be enough loving people to help. !
sad story i think we need to arrest that family that gave him away TWICE after the cat walked 12 miles just to get there when i grow up if i see an abandoned cat i will adopt it and love it like my cats i have now this was the most heart warming cat story i heard though if you say the cat got stolen and cut out the end prts
There should be a registry for individuals who should never be able to sustain the privilege to share their lives with an animal.
I couldn't stop crying too,He's such a beautiful little boy,he's blessed now with a loving family, and a curse on the previous owners. :)

Two of my cats don't really get on but we do as much as we can to stop any conflicts, they certainly don't hurt each other. I'd never dream of getting rid of one.
We recently had to put our 18-year old cat to sleep because her little heart finally gave out from old age and she was suffering. It's been well over a month now and we're still grieving every day for her, wishing we could have our sweet girl back. These pieces of trash took care of this animal for years, and when it showed how incredibly devoted he was to them they tried to have him killed. I have no words for their cruelty, selfishness and unworthiness as pet owners and as human beings in general. Whatever other animals they have should be removed from that home, they're not worthy of taking care of them, nor are they worthy of being loved by them.
I hate people who buy a pet thinking its going to be the best. But whens its not they give them away. thanks Michelle Puckett
I wish a do not adopt list existed so people like that were banned from adopting animals. I'm happy that at least this sweet boy's story has a happy ending.
This infuriates me. I am tearing my eyes out! How is this even possible? I could never give up on an animal, even less one that walks miles to be with me and then send him to be euthanized! Hope that when their offspring gets bored of them will send them to be euthanized to...
This is so heartbreaking, i would never even think to cast away my cat, pets are for life, I'm glad Toby have a new loving family.
A local rescue posted this on Facebook: “this 9 year old cat when missing 8 years ago and has now found her way home... the owners got a new cat and the new cat hates her so she will be put down this Saturday please help us find her a home” I was so mad at seeing this stuff...
Aside from the misleading title this is a great piece. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have pets...
Just an update - Toby now has a home with a wonderful family. He was adopted on Friday the 13th.
Some humans really don't deserve animals. It is so sad and frustrating that these type of stories are told every day on social media. It is wonderful that a 'good' human found him but he shouldn't have been just dumped in the first place. It is just b******t that some horrible people think animals are disposable.
“The family he thought had loved him took him to a shelter and asked staff to euthanize him,” I have no words. Who are WE to decide who/what lives or not? im sad and happy at the same time, that poor kitty seems happy on his new home.
I am so goddamn angry. If Toby does ever need a new home, I'll drive there myself and bring him home to North Dakota.
Scum. At least he had a soft landing. In areas with poor quality shelters, it would be a sad ending. Sigh.
Sadly, some people have compassion and responsibility....and others do not. But cats and dogs are amazingly resilient...especially when they are finally in a safe place. My three rescues...all feline...show great gratitude every day...every day. It looks like this beautiful family is a dream come true for this deserving creature.
Moral of the story : The cat lost its slave and then got new slave... dogs are the only pets
Euthanize that family. There are 7 BILLION humans on the planet. We won't miss a few bad ones.
I mean, the first attempt wasn't such a bad idea. If a cat doesn't get along with the other cats in a household, at all, then you need to find a new home for him/her. But, Christ, the second attempt... :-/ What is WRONG with people????? And I bet they are the ones that complain about society having become so selfish and wonder about why their precious off-spring never visits when they're old.
