When we think about the 4th of July one image that comes to mind is that of the Founding Fathers and Continental Congress presenting the first draft of the Declaration of Independence for signing on July 4, 1776 - but this isn't entirely accurate. Famed historian David McCullough wrote, "No such scene, with all the delegates present, ever occurred at Philadelphia." The date of July 4th has been accepted as the day because that's when the document was adopted by the Continental Congress. However, it still had to be signed by various other committees and wasn't officially engrossed (finalized and in larger print) until August 2, 1776.

Today's explosive celebrations aren't much different from the original 4th of July celebrations. After the words of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 were read military personnel and civilians in the Bowling Green section of Manhattan tore down a statue of King George III and had massive bonfires. The following year the Virginia Gazette describes the July 4 celebration in Philadelphia: "The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded with thirteen rockets on the commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated. Everything was conducted with the greatest order and decorum, and the face of joy and gladness was universal."

Well look on the upside, there also are koalas there. And not all the rumours of their wildlife are true, they have a lot of amazing animals that have bad publicity. But basically, yeah.

The wedge tail is a stud and extremely awesome but it's not the largest. Simply putting an asterisk by it doesn't make it true, other than to people on the internet

This. But I'd amend that to "lazy people on the internet." The internet also provides us with this nice list of the largest eagles... https://dinoanimals.com/animals/the-largest-eagles-top-10/ The wedge tailed eagle isn't in the top five by weight. It's only #3 by length. It's only #3 by wingspan. The largest eagle that ever lived wasn't a wedge tailed eagle. So to the person who created the comparison: if you can't take pride in a thing without lying, maybe there's something defective in your sense of pride. Feel free to look into that, offline if you would please.

Don't know why you got downvoted. As a biologist, I approve of your attempt to save the Bald eagle's honor. ;) He can't help being the US symbol.

I'm the last person to get all jingoistic over birds, but bald eagles in the wild are really quite spectacular. They are simply beautiful, especially along the seacoasts of the Northwest. They do have a sweet, high-pitched little cry, though!

The bald eagle is an extremely distinctive animal. As a symbol, it was perfect. Sadly, the Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle, awesome as it might be... almost no one outside of Australia knows about it. They know about the kangaroos this eagle hunts. Feel free to compare the bald eagle vs a kangaroo ;)

Well, yeah, it's from Australia. What else was anyone expecting? Right now I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Quokkas are in fact super aggressive and will swarm and devour you when nobody is watching.

If you are facting (something for grammar nazis), then the facts should always be right. There are couple of eagles bigger than Australian Wedge Tailed eagle. It should say one of the largest or 3rd largest.

I have been fortunate to see 2 Australian wedge tailed eagles on the side of the road eating a kangaroo carcass. And my god they are HUGE. I never knew how big they actually were.

There's no such thing as an "American" bald eagle. It's called a bald eagle, or alternatively a NORTH AMERICAN bald eagle. Bloody Americans...

I'm just back from a bird of prey experience where I got to fly a bald eagle, they are quite big already and HEAVY, I couldn't carry it for longer than a couple of minutes, now I can only imagine the size of the Australian eagle now, must be a magnificent bird

... so, what's your point? It would be silly to make the Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle an American symbol. Why start up with the bald eagle and it's fish eating habits? Does it have to be a super violent bird to be a symbol? I just don't get this post.

Ahhh, poor Bald eagle... they're beautiful birds and didn't ask to ever become the patriotic symbol of the US... :(

And the wedge-tailed eagle is only the largest species of bird of prey in Australia, not the world, and it's barely any larger than the bald eagle, on average (bald: 70-102cm length,1,8-2,3m wingspan, wedge-tailed: 81-106cm length, 1,8-2,3m wingspan...), there are several larger species of eagles in the world (Steller's, Philipine, Harpy...). So don't bash on this pretty one with it's pretty white head. :(

The American bald eagle is majestic and we love it for its beauty. Australia's is a thug.

Now all of America joins together in 4th of July festivities with good food, fireworks, holiday sales, and for the lucky ones, no work - but it wasn't always this way. The first state to recognize this day as an official holiday was Massachusetts on July 3, 1781. It wasn't until June 28, 1870 that Congress decided to start designating federal holidays which included Independence Day as well as New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Eighty-five years before the 4th of July was recognized as a federal holiday, the town of Bristol, Rhode Island were throwing what has been dubbed "America's Oldest Fourth of July Celebration." The patriotic events began after the Revolutionary War and just entered its 234th year. Forget 4th of July weekend - residents of Bristol begin festivities on Flag Day, June 14, and last all the way through to the 2.5-mile July 4th parade.

No matter where you live it is almost impossible to avoid hearing fireworks - even if just from a distance. According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, around 15,000 fireworks displays take place for the Fourth of July holiday every year (even they aren't exactly on July 4th). Prices vary, but most small towns spend anywhere from $8000-$15,000 on their fireworks display, with larger cities going into the millions, like the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular that averages more than $2 million.

I love they went to the trouble of turning some of the diagonal whites on their edge in the UK flag so it has a thin line and fat line. Most people drawing it don't even bother doing that.

That’s how I feel on Australia Day. It seems to be the only time of year Aussies are generally patriotic but I guess it is more to do with an excuse to have another BBQ and a p**s up. I couldn’t care less.
