4-Year-Old Gets Covid And Her Mom Can’t Decide Whether To Go To Disney World Or Not

4-Year-Old Gets Covid And Her Mom Can’t Decide Whether To Go To Disney World Or Not

Countries are locking down tight again and imposing new restrictions left and right as the holidays are approaching. This should give you an indication of just how serious the Covid-19 situation is right now. Unfortunately, it seems like no matter how many people get infected or die (there have been 76.8 million infections and 1.69 million Covid-related deaths worldwide), far from everyone’s taking it seriously.

Take one mother as an example. She knows that her 4-year-old has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. She knows that her child could spread the infection to others. And yet she’s still considering whether to take her and her 6-year-old sibling to Disney World as their Christmas gift. Have a read through the mom’s post yourselves, dear Pandas. And though we get it—nobody wants to see their Christmas plans ruined—it’s people’s lives we’re talking about. 2020 is a real Grinch, but we all have to make small sacrifices so that the next year is better.

Bored Panda wanted to get a professional’s take on the situation, so we reached out to a Covid ICU nurse who goes by the tag The Galactic Gardener on Instagram and who got her first Pfizer Covid-19 vaccination on December 15. “I would urge people to think of the families with loved ones in the hospital and loved ones who have lost their lives and just remember what they are thankful for in this time,” she told Bored Panda that people should think about more than just themselves during these trying times.

Mrs. Claws’ Twitter post went viral and showed that some people still don’t believe the coronavirus is serious business

“As a nurse, I have learned that a holiday is what I make of it. It doesn’t have to be on a certain day, and it definitely doesn’t have to be in person. I think that we all need to work together to get Covid behind us,” the ICU nurse told us that our holidays don’t have to be ‘ruined’ just because our plans change. We can adapt and overcome.

Unfortunately, the nurse isn’t optimistic about what could be said to convince people to stay home during the holidays. “I just hope that people realize that the only way that we can get Covid behind us is to all work together. We can all have different roles and different modes but it has to be a unified front. Some may get the vaccine, others may stay home, and others need to really focus on masking and hand hygiene.”

The nurse also pointed out that there “are still accuracy issues reported” with some Covid tests. “Plenty of people get negative tests before they finally get their positive. And at that point, they thought they were ‘safe’ and ended up infecting multiple people. It really depends on the type and the lab, and how the test was administered.”

Twitter user Mrs. Claws, who shared what the mom sent to the Disney World Junkies Facebook group, got over 193k likes on her thread. Naturally, the thread got a lot of people upset. Because some of us are still far too chill about the global pandemic. We’re just glad that Mrs. Claws blocked out the mother’s name (can you imagine the amount of hate she’d get?).

In case you needed more proof that you should minimize the amount of contact you have with strangers, scientists announced that they discovered a new variant of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. It’s far more infectious. And it’s being taken very seriously.

For example, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and Israel are just some of the countries to block UK flights while trains can no longer leave the UK via the Channel Tunnel.

So, while the Covid-19 vaccines that are being approved and delivered to hospitals are a flash of good news, the situation’s far from over. It’s no time to relax. Unless it’s with a big cup of hot chocolate and the members of your own household. In front of a good Christmas movie. Waiting for Santa.

Here’s how Twitter users reacted to the post. Spoiler alert: they weren’t too happy with the mom

I love that the idea of maybe going to Disney World a month later makes her "**unbelievably** stressed and heartbroken" as if those family members of 1.7 million dead people just could not fathom her struggle.

School principal and child development specialist here... Children are resilient and will remember and respect your decision later in life to put others well being before yourselves. Be honest with them and postpone the trip until everyone is negative. The rule is 14 days quarantine from the positive test or 14 days plus until symptoms are gone. The gravity of spreading Covid to others who may die should be the deciding force here. There will be tears yes, but explain and show your kids the pics of hospitals overloaded and instill now a responsibility to humanity and the greater good. It's a life lesson here for your children. Disney can be postponed.

Well exactly. The idea that this is so 'devastating' and 'heartbreaking' in comparison to people actually dying, people losing their loved ones really does my head in. The word she should be using is disappointing, not devastasting. People really need to get some perspective in life. The children will cope better than the parents I expect. You don't risk other people's lives just so you can have a flipping holiday. Ye gods.

First of all, a vacation should not be considered a Christmas present to small children. Little kids want to be able to unwrap something on Christmas morning and memories of a family vacation is not a Christmas present. Secondly, if you can't decide whether or not to cancel a family trip during this time, you are a major covidiot. Thirdly, nurses and doctors and other essential workers are working too hard to keep having to put up with this virus because morons don't know how to just stay home. Finally, I have been exposed to this crap twice already and I am getting tired of all the complaining about not showing symptoms or having to wear a mask. If people do not start taking this damn virus seriously, we are going to be dealing with it for the next decade. My father should not be confined to his home for the next decade so a bunch of people can do whatever the hell they want.

I just don't understand people. I just wrapped my 3 year old's presents today. Spent less than $15 and she has a bunch of stuff to open. I went to the dollar store. My parents did the same until it was worthwhile to spend money on something I wouldn't break or get bored of immediately. I LOVED THOSE CHEAP PRESENTS!! My kid opened a gift for our cats today, a self scratcher. She had a blast! This is all about the parents and not the kids. I also went to Disney World when I was 8 and it sucked. BECAUSE I WAS TOO SHORT FOR ALL OF THE RIDES! Stupid stupid people.

Here's the thing though, there are so many mixed messages. Disney land shouldn't even be open. Yes this person is being stupid, but with the number of people being stupid I have to blame the lack of leadership and cohesive message.

You are absolutely right. There has been a total lack of leadership and guidance on this issue and that's why we can't get over this. No theme park should be opened right now.

I'm so sick of people not staying home. This s**t will end faster if we all stay home together at the same time. YOU WILL NOT DIE FROM STAYING HOME! I haven't left my house in like 6 or so years (PTSD) and although that definitely is NOT a healthy way to live, my point is, I haven't died from boredom or died from missing out on holidays, etc.

Taking a 4 yo to Disneyland is a waste of time and money anyway, since they are too young to remember anything. But taking a contagious child to a public place is a whole new level of idiocy.

Here in Australia we locked down properly and most people respected the rules. Yesterday there were 2 cases in the state I am in, and 19 Australia wide. Over 38,000 came forward to be tested in one day. I am not entirely sure what is wrong with America right now. Disaster movies make the USA look far better at reacting to pandemics.

@Potatogamers2, you are correct. One can test positive and not be "sick". We call such a person an "asymptomatic spreader". If one tests positive, one should not even THINK about wandering around in public.

Some people are selfish. She cares much more about the trip than health of her daughter and the rest of the family. Does she realize that her symptoms-free daughter could infect other people during their visit to Disneyland and it could have severe effect on their health? She knows well what the situation is in the world and she should not have relied on this trip as the only Christmas gift for her children. Disneyland could have as well closed due to lockdown measures, one never knows when it hits. And besides that, Disney parks will gladly reschedule your tickets and accommodation, so they can plan to go there in 2021. I am sure that she can still buy some nice gifts for her kids. Don´t tell me that they spent every cent on this trip.

I guess thinking about other people and social responsibility is a totally foreign concept. Then again, I'm a foreigner (Canadian), so I don't understand selfishness. We do have selfish a-holes in Canada, too, but our governments have tried to tackle the pandemic and contain it. Thank goodness there are responsible folks in the US - I just wish their prez had set a good example and not validated the anti-maskers/hoax promoters/"my freedom" types, etc.

We had our kids first trip to Disneyland scheduled for last April, they were 5 and 7. We cancelled it in March before they even closed Disneyland. We were disappointed we weren't able to go but Disneyland isn't going anywhere. At this point we will probably not end up going until 2021 but oh well. We also got covid last week even though we have been very safe and cautious-I started homeschooling the kids this year, we wear masks everywhere and have not socialized or celebrated thanksgiving with anyone else. Thankfully we have had minor symptoms but that's how easily this can spread, particularly when others aren't taking it seriously, like this lady.

Disney is open, but under some tight regulations. The restaurants and hotels are closed. Everyone two years old and up has to wear a mask, social distancing is required, and admission tickets have to be reserved. All that, plus a covid positive child. Why is this woman so desperate to go?

This woman doesn't make sense and is being a brat. Disney offers full refunds if a family member is sick/needs medical care. My mum couldn't make a trip to Disney because she had to get cancer treatment...they refunded the trip for our entire family. She also had an ulcerative colitis flare up while there once and they refunded her dining reservation so she could stay in the hotel room to rest even though it was less than the 24 hours cancellation refund rule. Disney is very understanding, they want to keep you happy so you come back to spend money later. Disney has even made changes to make it easier to cancel trips since the pandemic started. Just reschedule!

Why is this even a question in this woman's mind? With covid, STAY HOME, keep ur kids safe, keep yourself and everyone else safe. NOT a time for amusement parks, unless you don't want to be alive to go anywhere later at a safe date. How DARE anyone put so many others at risk, I think its nearly criminal. STAY HOME unless NECESSARY. How hard is that to wrap the mind around?

Unfortunately, this year (among other things) showed us that insane amount of population is in the realms of "wtf" crazy. Sometimes it is hard to grasp that 9 months later, there are still plenty of those who think that pandemic is a word from a fairy tale, that virus is non-existent etc, and are completely oblivious of the situation. We celebrated my youngest's birthday in CoVid+ isolation, but bought present, cake ingredients and balloons prior to it, 'just in case something happens', in the end we had the greatest birthday of all times, because we made the atmosphere for it, and she was thrilled. So the same goes for Christmas at your house, dear lady. It is not for something over the top and at all cost, it is about being together. Can't go to Disneyland? Boo f*hoo. I hope your child has a full recovery.

There is a global pandemic- you can survive without a huge celebration. The pandemic has been going on all year- why plan to go somewhere for Christmas several months before- it won't suddenly go away. Just help by staying at home, wearing a mask and washing your hands.

There are people who have been unemployed for month,(many of which have no job left to return to because of permit closures/gone out of business)can not get their kids anything for Christmas-hell they would not even have food for their kids if not school programs and food shelf. They have no idea where they will get money for rent to put a roof over their kids heads. There are front line works that are so exhausted they will not be able to stay awake to do things with their children on Christmas- that is if they are not working at the time. There are so many people who will not spend christmas ever again with parents, grandparents, ... because they died from covid. All this is because of covid and this person needs to stop evaluate her actions before she takes her daughter to spread and cause more people to be put in before mentioned places! If anyone deserves to be in the before mentioned places it is her and her stupidity! I can not believe that she thinks her and her family is so important that they should be able to put others at great risk to avoid her and her family miss Disneyland. To hell with everyone who can not afford or is dead/or will be from her spreader actions.

From personal experience when our son was that young and when we went with inlaws and their two girls of similar age as the OP, kids that small can't even go on most rides. 4 and 6 year olds are too young for Disney theme parks anyway I've been to both U.S. parks many times and kids that small just don't enjoy it as much as one might think. At least half the time they're sleeping in a stroller mom or dad is pushing all over the park... usually over the heels of adults without small kids. I really wish Disney would ban stroller and stop renting them. A kid who requires a stroller is too small/young to go to a Disney theme park.

But I remember going, riding A small world for the first time, seeing the park before stupid star wars took over (well that's all three times I've been), riding the Carousel. We didn't get to celebrate Christmas, my mother got diagnosed with cancer and we stayed at home to keep her safe (She's living with me). And due to people like the woman wanting to go to Disney, my mom most likely won't have surgery very soon since it's currently not life threatening as the tumor is small and the health care got scaled down to be able to handle Covid patients.

The downside to a democracy is that people have the total freedom to live in epitome of their idiocy. And this election and the year 2020 has shown us that there are an exasperating amount of not only idiots, but selfish idiots, who like sheep led to the slaughter just march to the narcissistic drum of their self-seeking leader idiot. Wow America. Wow.

All i hear from the covidiots is "i have rights" - "I have exemption". No, you don't have rights any longer the very moment your actions infringes the rights to safety of someone else - such as the right to life, as technically, you are a walking death threat to others, without proper precautions. If you for some reason have a "medial exemption", you are in no medical condition to be out and about in a pandemic. Also, heard the idiot comment that "you are wearing a mask, so why should i have to?" - the reality is that my mask protects you from me, but not me from you, and i can reasonably consider you not wearing a mask an attempt to assault me. Make your choice carefully.

Im sick of the entitlement of people in general. Bullshit responses like "well we've followed the rules up till now" and "but the kids have had a hard time and been sooo good". Seriously give your head a wobble, we've been sat terrified that the shopping we get delivered will be contaminated and kill my vulnerable partner, my kids have also been soooo good but they can also continue to do so because it's a f*****g pandemic. It's not like they are 100's of miles away from their parents worried they won't ever see them again because their parents could be bombed at any moment.

Man gets on a plane. Collapses on plane. Given mouth to mouth CPR. He died anyway. He had COVID and got on the plane anyway. Passengers' health were all severely compromised. Those who gave CPR are scared stiff. True news and it happened just a few days ago...United Airlines. Karen, you need an attitude adjustment.

Best comment: “Is she unfamiliar with the concept ‘my child is sick’?” Seriously. Stupid, selfish idea in the first place, but holy cow, the MILLIONS of people who have died, and those who cancelled truly important gatherings, and she’s all “devastated” over postponing a trip to Disney? Not a peep or glimmer of worry over her child having caught this horrific virus.

Let's do a risk/reward analysis. 1. Going to Disneyland and risking spreading COVID to others, in some cases resulting in death or long-term health problems. 2. Missing a trip that you can do later (and with very young children, one of whom is sick and may feel bad). I'd say that's a no-brainer except that so many people with no apparent brains keep picking the wrong one.

The virus has been around pretty much for the entire year. When did she start planning a Disney visit? Why did she not think (sorry, that would require a brain) and just say they'll go next year. Go out and buy some presents; a four year old and a six year old need to open gifts. The four year old will not even remember a visit.

We are never getting out of this. I have a feeling that masks are going to stay for a long time and more and more people are going to die from this. As much as I can't stand human kind because of people like this, I am very happy to see so many people on this thread with a brain at least. I wish there was something that we could do besides wearing masks.

I’m truly convinced that the trip was more for the parents than the kids, they both somehow got the kids to agree to NO presents and instead a trip to Disney. NO AMOUNT OF MONEY OR FANCY TRIPS WILL EVER REPLACE YOUR CHILD’S LIFE. The thought of having anyone’s child in the ICU by themselves with COVID kills me because of the restrictions right now. I’ve always said that not EVERYONE can be parents, just because you can, it doesn’t always mean that you should. This is a no-brainer!!! 🤦🏽‍♀️👎

1. The fact that Disney was open while the US’s per capita daily case numbers are 30-50 times worse than my country’s absolute worst day. 2. The fact that this...individual decided to take her kids there during said severe outbreak. 3. The fact that her kid actually GOT COVID and SHE WAS STILL CONSIDERING GOING ON THE BLOODY TRIP. I can’t. I just can’t. My condolences to everyone sharing a country with people like this.

My earliest memories stem from me being less than 3 years old. Children are wildly underrated and they DO remember early stuff even though a massive re-structuring of the brain at approximately 7 can cause you to forget a lot of what happened before.

NOT a time for amusement parks, unless you don't want to be alive to go anywhere later at a safe date. How DARE anyone put so many others at risk, I think its nearly criminal.

Dumb bitches like this are the reason we're tits deep in COVID-19. The fact that Disney is open doesn't help, but how is this window licking idiot really this unsure about IF she should cancel? FFS!

I hate people like this. Her kid can spread it and why would anyone travel right now especially to Covid central (Florida) and a theme park no less! Her level of selfishness is mind boggling. Stay the **** HOME! She’s a crap human and parent.

Why is this even a question? Also it's not like the kid will remember everything in disneyland when being only 4 years old.

I went the first time when I was four and I remember things from it. Mainly that I was scared to even ride Dumbo and I had to wait outside the Haunted Mansion because I was too scared to go in. But I remember going, riding A small world for the first time, seeing the park before stupid star wars took over (well that's all three times I've been), riding the Carousel. So yes 4 year olds do remember things

She should ask her 4 year old if she's willing to go to Disneyland if the possibility exists she kills all of the characters.

This is why we will be stuck with the stupid virus forever. Chances are.. there will be new viruses soon enough.. new pandemics (Because we travel so much, viruses don't stay where they used to).

I can kind of understand the woman's despair. I hope she gets her money back from the company that told her "no no, it's fine". That is some questionable behavior.

My earliest memories stem from me being less than 3 years old. Children are wildly underrated and they DO remember early stuff even though a massive re-structuring of the brain at approximately 7 can cause you to forget a lot of what happened before.

Simple solution: don't get tested. Kid has a cough, woopty doo. He'll get over it.
