Startup Launches New 3D-Printed Steaks That Are Good For The Environment
Meat production is known to have a negative impact on the environment and the best way to reduce it is to stop consuming animal meat. However, it’s easier said than done, especially for those who can’t live without having a juicy steak or a burger once in a while. That’s why, over the years, the alternative meat market has started booming. With many new technologies invented in an attempt to produce a plant-based meat that tastes just as good as the real thing, people are shifting their preferences for environmentally friendly food.

This Israel-based company is launching the world’s first 3D-printed vegan meat

Recently, one such new technology has intrigued alternative meat lovers. A startup called Redefine Meat introduced its brand new ploy to create 3D-printed meat! The Israel-based startup is planning on launching its new product, Alt-Steak, next year.

The company decided to do something that hasn’t been done before—3d-print vegan meat to mimic the texture, appearance, and flavor of real steaks.

Alt-steaks are designed to perfectly mimic the muscle structure of beef. After working closely with “meat experts” such as chefs, food technologists, and butchers, Redefine Meat digitally mapped more than 70 different sensory factors to create that juicy, tasty steak.

The steaks are made out of soy and pea proteins, coconut fat and sunflower oil, natural colors, and flavors. Being plant-based, they are healthier than the real ones as they don’t have cholesterol and are high in protein.
The beef cuts are soon to be tested in high-end restaurants in Israel and hopefully, they will be available for broader distribution next year.

Share on FacebookWhy do these vegan companies keep trying to make 'plant steak' - look, it's not steak. Just make some plant based food that tastes good and we'll eat it. Stop trying to call it "steak" that just brings on an unfavorable comparison.
Because there are lots of people who like the taste of meat, but hate the thought of killing animals for food. If technology allows those people to have it both ways, who are you to complain?
Load More Replies...This is meant for meat eaters, to convince them to not eat meat. Not for vegans. Vegans already eat vegan, they don’t really need fake meat, although some might like it. Meat eaters need fake meat. Personally, I prefer real meat, this doesn’t look good and I doubt it tastes anything like meat.
They are also for *former* meat eaters who are now vegans.

As a lifelong (since the late 1960s) Trekkie, I have to say I never thought I’d live to see it, but I’m tickled pink that I have. I can now live a part of the Star Trek experience. Wow! (And no, this is not sarcasm; this is sincere excitement!)
one of the nicest reactions i've seen to this idea :)
Load More Replies...As someone who gave up beef and pork, for ethical and environmental reasons, and genuinely misses a nice medium rare steak (just because I think it's wrong doesn't mean it isn't delicious), this very much intrigues me. I've tried several 'fake meats' and none of them come close to 'the real thing' for me. Maybe this will? I'm also intrigued by lab grown meats. Whatever it is, if it puts an end to factory farming, I'm all for it. Seriously. Look up gestation crates. They'll make anyone one with half a heart rethink their bacon.
But do you really think this stuff made of soy, pea proteins etc. has the same taste and consistency as meat?
Load More Replies...To be honest, the photos turned me off. I would probably try it, though
For "good" in "good for the environment", read "differently bad".
how is this 'differently bad' when meat production is one of the the biggest contributors to climate change? reducing meat consumption is a good thing
Load More Replies...No. Only hipster chefs, who will then serve it deconstructed (cripes, a f*****g food puzzle), and on a shovel or in a jar or something else just as ludicrous. Oh, and charge an arm and a leg (pun intended) for it too.
Load More Replies...But why? I thought one of the big parts of being vegan was because of the meat industry in its entirety. I'm only going off of Vegans in my life and those who've I met, almost all of them have a massive issue with the way animals are treated and the meat industry in general. Only a couple did it for health reasons. I mean, yeah I'm glad technology is progressing and this is actually really interesting to me. But Why?
I think (this is my opinion, I don't want to invalidate yours or anyone else's) that if it costs less to 3-D print the steak than to kill a cow, or if the steak is nonperishable in some way, that it might help make food more accessible in impoverished areas, or make it easier to transport to other places. Or, alternatively, I read about a disease carried by ticks that makes people allergic to red meat. Maybe that has something to do with it? Again, I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's opinions.

No, they did that because they were conserving the raw materials the replicators needed. They set up a “farm” on one of the decks to grow food, and traded for food and other stores with the friendliest of the new worlds they encountered along the way.
Load More Replies...I have many food intolerance, I have to read the ingredients of everything I buy, this is exactly the type of over process food with a long list ingredients I try to avoid. Never had this problem with steak.
Sure you never had that problem wit steak, Vic. The ingredients will not list antibiotics and growth hormone fed to the poor cow.

George Foreman is still considering it, Sharper Image is still considering it, SkyMall is still considering it, Hammacher Schlemmer is still considering it. Sears said no.
I guess this is alternative for meat-loving people to eat something else than animals, not for vegans... I can't eat soy so it's a no. I don't eat steaks every day, not even once a month so I won't feel bad.
I don't want to attack you or anything but just because you do something that causes another being harm rarely doesn't mean that it is okay. For example; I don't kick puppies every day, I only do it once a month; I steal things every day, I only do it once a month; I don't support the beef industry every day, I only do it once a month. It's all the same. If you know it is wrong then stop doing it, don't just do it less often.
Load More Replies...Plant based meat is so heavily processed because otherwise, it won't taste even remotely similar to actual meat. It has to be so overtly processed for the taste to be even remotely authentic.
As a vegan I'd be willing to try this. A lot of the food I eat is more soya and pulses based for protein, but I do like fake meat. The idea of simulated blood and muscle is a bit gross though. I've always been vegetarian since my parent is, I switched to vegan at 11 so never liked meat. I hope this will encourage more meat eaters to eat fake meat and save the planet
So what do we do with all the cows and chickens if we don't farm them or eat them? Release them into the wild? And without population control or natural predators, how long till they start dying off on their own?
This cannot really be a question ... they wouldn't even exist if they were not bred to torture them, torture them, torture them and eventually eat them. Without demand, no one would breed them. Simple as that.
Load More Replies...So it would be normal to call steak something made of "soy and pea proteins, coconut fat and sunflower oil, natural colors, and flavors"?
Read the ingredients on a lot of the “food” you eat now, then see if that same question comes to mind again. At least this sounds like it won’t contain all the synthetic preservatives that are in a lot of what we eat now, so may end up being the better alternative after all.
Load More Replies...A lot of vegetarians are repulsed by meat and think it is ethically wrong. Looking at something that looks like meat probably is not something many would do. But also, just because something can be "printed" doesn't mean it should.
it's a good idea to print/grow meat in labs because the meat industry is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. vegetarians and vegans have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than meat eaters. it is definitely a good idea to print meat for the sake of the future climate.
Load More Replies...I'm just going to eat real steak and vegans/vegetarians can continue to eat food they secretly wish was meat.
yeah… and we need to pay 75$ for it i guess? and they'll need more lands for the crops so more deforestation so less land for trees and animal… not really eco-friendly.
What the hell are you talking about Kjorn??? You guess wrong!!! 80 % of all crops grown is used to feed live"stock" - farm animals!! That is the reason for all that deforestation - destruction of wild lands and that is, according to Kjorn, really eco -friendly. And, for your information Beyond Burger, Impossible burger, Gardein products cost from 4 to 9 dollars. If more people will buy them the cost would go down. It amazes me what kind of excuses and "justifications" "good" people come with so they could continue to massacre animals and plunder & destroy our planet..... you are doing good job gentle people.
Load More Replies....... someone invents stuff, stuff actually very much fit to make this world a better one - and the only thing all the Karens have to say is cry about the so-called propaganda of a 1% minority. Now, what does that say about how eating meat affects your brain?
All those Karens and Kens just down-voted DC's comment, because this is how their animal protein effects their brains: The human brain uses a great deal of energy. In a resting individual, the brain accounts for about 20 % of the entire body's energy expenditure, even though it is only about 2 % of the total body mass. Although most cells of the body can use many types of fuel - carbohydrates, fats, proteins - the brain cannot The brain requires the sugar glucose! Everybody knows that our body converts carbohydrates to sugar glucose and that there are two types of carbohydrates - simple carbohydrates - that is refine sugar we put in our coffee and candies and cakes, not a good way to feed the brain, and - complex carbohydrates which comes from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. So, if those meat, dairy, egg eaters stuff their bodies with all that animal protein and reject carbohydrates, then their brains must be starving, hence their ingenious thinking!!!
Load More Replies...If you choose not to eat meat at all, then you should understand that in any form other than natural is full of stuff you should not be eating to start with. Just have the steak and your body will thank you for the protein.
Where did you get that idiocy, Lisa? We do not have health and opioid crises because people do not eat steaks, any meat, dairy, or eggs - that is any animal proteins which flood the human body with animal protein waste products and kidneys must flush this waste into the urine and to do that kidneys use calcium. No vegan has overworked or failed kidneys or is calcium deficient. Protein from plants is a clean protein. P.S. Do not forget antibiotics and all those growth hormones in meat - very "natural". For all that your body will thank you and reward you with painful, chronic inflammations and diseases: arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimers, diabetes, heart diseases - clogged arteries, failed organs - kidneys, liver, and various cancers. Enjoy your retirement!!!
