Dog With Deformed Paws Gets 3D-Printed Prosthetic Legs That Let Him Run
Derby, a Husky mix dog born with severely deformed front paws, can now walk thanks to some of the latest 3D-printing technologies. The U.S.-based 3D Systems company created customized prosthetics for Derby that look like the legs on a rocking chair and finally let him outrun his humans!
It all started when Derby was fostered by Tara Anderson, who works at 3D Systems. He was going to be euthanized until he got picked up by Peace and Paws, a no-kill shelter that gave him a chance. Read more about their story below!

Derby’s front paws were deformed from birth
He could barely walk, and often scraped or cut himself
He was going to be euthanized, but a no-kill shelter decided to save him
And when he got his 3d-printed prosthetic legs, he was off like greased lightning!
It all started with his foster mommy Tara Anderson, who works at 3D Systems
They took CT scans of Derby’s elbows and designed some custom prosthetic legs
The prosthetics will start low and get bigger as Derby gets used to them
Derby now lives with Don and Sherry Portanova
He’s really excited about his new legs – take a look!

It says right in the article "The prosthetics will start low and get bigger as Derby gets used to them"
Totaly beautiful, but the new legs are too small. His back is not in the horizontal axis.
It's explained that the height of the legs increases over time as he gets accustomed to them.
Load More Replies...He looks so happy! :-) But why didn' t they produce them higher - as high as the hind legs are? It doesn't look healthy for the back/spine.

Load More Replies...That is pretty cool! I wonder if they can do that with human prosthetics? Prosthetics are just way overpriced, and they are only good for so
Wonderful story. Way to go Derby. An article recently on the news was talking about the new 3D prosthetics.
Brilliant! Please DO reach out &see if your amazing creative talent can help millions of human amputees; why not try.. http://jaipurfoot.org

It's amazing how 3D constructions could be extremely usable nowadays. It will be a solution for other many problems.
It is a very good idea but Just don't wait too long for the right height. I understand what you are saying we first crawl before we walk...
He's so beautiful and so lucky to have found people who care enough to make the effort to keep him alive, active, and so obviously happy!
They are such wonderful hearted people. God bless their beautiful souls. They surely made him happy and gave him a much better life.(,n_n,)♡

Brilliant, you have a wonderful puppy there, thanks you for taking care of him...
As a Mechanical Engineer, this is type of field I want to get into. I would love to design medical prosthetics. Just look how happy he is
