Someone Peeled Off 30 Years Of Graffiti, And Here’s What They Found Underneath

Ever wondered what hides under that final coat of paint on a wall filled with graffiti? How about a wall that was painted over and over for 30 years? Well, you’re about to get your answer.

Imgur user PaulDeGraaf has uploaded his detailed analysis of a segment he peeled off of a Graffiti Hall of Fame called “Doornroosje” in the city of Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “What started as a 70’s Hippie cult place, became a center of music and art in the early 80’s,” PaulDeGraaf writes. “One of the first places where it was legal to smoke cannabis. It still a Music studio and Graffiti Hall of Fame. The building is surrounded by walls that are all spray painted from top to bottom.”

Scroll below to uncover what does 30 years worth of graffiti looks like when smooshed into a single stack of layers.

This is the Graffiti Hall of Fame called “Doornroosje” in the city of Nijmegen, the Netherlands

Imgur user PaulDeGraaf peeled a fragment of the wall that was painted over and over for 30 years

And that’s what 30 years of graffiti looks like

‘When you take a closer look, you’ll get a layered timeline of 30 years, just like a tree but made out of a spray can paint’

Keep doing this for the next century, and Urban Archaeologists will be having a field day. :D

That's exactly what I was thinking! Fordite is awesome stuff. Too bad this paint is significantly softer.

Tagging over the top of decent graffiti is disgusting. Why ruin such beautiful work with such ugly vandalism? So disrespectful to the artist

im sorry, but i call BS, i dont think its possible for this to be from the brick wall shown as such thick layer would prevent the brick outline to be still this much visible.

It's interesting that a number of artists chose to use brush paint instead of spray paint (the thicker layers)

the artists often use brush paint as base coat to have a unicoloured backround without the "disturbing" piece below .

In Vienna there are some legal walls where graffiti artists have been spraying for decades and the walls already come off at some points through wind, rain etc. I make jewelry out of it... Check out BIRDLY AT if you´re interested ;-)

I'm more concerned to the fact that he peeled it off. Why does he even did that? Looking for attention?

There is actually a "stone" called Fordite that sells for a pretty high price. It's made of layers of paint that have built up over the years in a Ford manufacturing plant!

Have seen a piece with a thickness of several inches once. It was from a spray booth. I'd love to see art made from this. Like bowls or figures.

On the up side, that building will never leak, and the bricks are preserved for eternity.

I think that there are non humans doing this graffiti around the world as a whole but there are some humans as wells there is an agenda to the graffiti I would think that the graffiti writers if they were human would lose interest after all this time and it would go out of style not last for decade after decade.
