2,500 Life Jackets Lay The Parlament Square In London To Represent The Refugees Who Died Trying To Reach Europe
On September 19, 2016, 2,500 life preservers–including 625 that belonged to children– were laid out in London’s Parliament Square to represent the lives taken at sea when refugees struggled to escape their country and find a new home.
According to the UNHCR, 11 men, women, and children across have died every day for the past 12 months trying to make it to Europe. About 6,940 people drowned or went missing between January 2015 and August 2016. These jackets represented those who tried to cross from Turkey to Chios. The display was taken down on Monday, but continues to resonate across Europe.
