With the overwhelming advertising of these products and services, ladies just have to have their eyes and wallets wide open in order to keep up with trends. And men? According to tendencies in the advertising world, they can use one of the multi-purpose products for both hair and body, spray some manly deodorant, and they should be good to go. Seems like back in the day, the media had a particular idea of how a true flamboyant man should look and what necessary tonsorial gadgets they should use to correspond to the standards. From detailed haircut descriptions to men’s hairspray, to mustache shampoo, and combs for every occasion you could imagine – the magazines and newspapers definitely gave men’s appearance the attention it deserves. Extremely thorough adverts were all men needed to follow to blend in with the chic '70s style and fashion scene. Especially when it comes to men hairstyles, and oh boy, were the 1970s hairy!
What were the tendencies of '70s hairstyles for men? What's interesting is that you could see a bit of variation in hair tendencies during this vivid decade, from rebelliously long to sophisticated short, blow-dried and bouffant to even punky spiked and bleached. Seems like at first men could not decide what they wanted but all in all, "overgrown" became the men hairstyle of the decade. Oh, and let's not forget mustaches, mutton chops, and even fake facial hair. After all, it was a hairy decade!

Those vintage ads might look ludicrous to our sophisticated modern eye since the industry has evolved so much, but if you look into this closely… It probably wouldn’t hurt anyone if some of today’s men used the expert advice on hair products and styling. Don't you agree?

I think it's hilarious that they have to mention in the caption "It runs on electricity..." Being that this had to be years before the Clicker (On every 80's teen girl's Christmas list) portable curling iron that ran on propane cartridges.

Ok, Kudos to Brylcreem for the positive remarks to make someone feel confident in their hair through their adverts.
My oldest brother had long hair in the 70s just before he got married. His future father-in-law threatened to cancel the wedding if he didn't cut his hair and he called the bluff by saying "Okay." Needless to say, the wedding wasn't cancelled and big brother got married with long hair. Now he shaves it all off and we can't remember what colour it was.
Brylcreem radio commercials are fun too. My local radio station plays vintage commercials regularly and Brylcreem is one of them that comes on a lot.
Back in those days no amount of product or prep was going to make my hair look anything but dorky, so I finally ended up where I'd been at the start of the 70s - with a very short buzz. For the last 30 years I've rocked a high and tight flat top that laughs at every hair product ever.
I just kept hearing the jingle for soul glow. I know, it’s fake, but that Jheri curl was very real.
Well, it's not different with what happens now with hipsters and their beard...
I always kept my hair short, think Navel Officer short, parted on the left. I'm so glad there are no pics of me like the ones above. The down side of short hair back then was everyone thought I was a narc. Trust me, I wasn't.
Speaking of hair, can you imagine what the bushes on these people looked like?!?!?
news flash: brazilian and other methods of hair removal really didn't come about until at least the 90's and mainstream by the oughts. Most people today probably don't look like modern porn, either, it's a false construct. (hence the rise of viagra due to over use, overly hard handling, and desensitization)
