The 1970s must have taken place on a different planet. These photos of men’s clothing from that decade leave us drowning in astounding mustard knits, loud patterns, high waists, way-too-skimpy briefs, and other men's fashion faux pas that we don't have enough of imagination to describe 40 years later.

As synthetics fell in price, casual men's style garbs were suddenly available to many fashion-forward young men looking to cut loose. Since polyester doesn’t require ironing, the “wash and wear” revolution is in full view of these models with their skin-tight threads and jumpsuits that leave nothing to the imagination. A 70s fashion Travelknit suit jumps out of the suitcase ready to wear, keeping with the decade’s focus on spontaneity and indulgence.

Scroll down for our pick of the worst 70s men's fashion pieces. And as a final note, don’t look at the prices in the funny ads! You’ll only resent H&M even more!

How very forward thinking. An ad that speaks to all races. But ... the high-water bells have got to go. What's with the blonde prince plastic?

This sort of fashion was common enough. Lots of the other things depicted in this article were not something that was seen or popular.

'70s fashions had a way of making the straightest guy look gay. Speaking as a gay guy who remembers the '70s very well, there were some clothes which were so off-the-wall I wouldn't be caught dead wearing them!

Stiffened wounds test their pride Men of five, still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls

I was the first person to wear bell bottoms in my elementary school. We bought them in New Jersey (at Schlesinger's) and I wore them in Des Plaines, Ill.

Does the hanky on the right mean he's gay and available or gay and spoken for?

Lolwut, did they run out of belts for the guy in the white pants? "Ah c**p, well, just grab one of those handkerchiefs then, that'll be good". And I don't believe in my near 4 decades of life as a human on this planet have I ever heard "ring-a-ding" used as a descriptor of variety.

If we weight these knits down with enough rocks we can drown them and no one will ever know!
