The 1970s must have taken place on a different planet. These photos of men’s clothing from that decade leave us drowning in astounding mustard knits, loud patterns, high waists, way-too-skimpy briefs, and other men's fashion faux pas that we don't have enough of imagination to describe 40 years later.

As synthetics fell in price, casual men's style garbs were suddenly available to many fashion-forward young men looking to cut loose. Since polyester doesn’t require ironing, the “wash and wear” revolution is in full view of these models with their skin-tight threads and jumpsuits that leave nothing to the imagination. A 70s fashion Travelknit suit jumps out of the suitcase ready to wear, keeping with the decade’s focus on spontaneity and indulgence.

Scroll down for our pick of the worst 70s men's fashion pieces. And as a final note, don’t look at the prices in the funny ads! You’ll only resent H&M even more!

Boys, take a clue - this is where the waist of your pants belongs, not at your knees like you were it nowadays!

I think that they look like cheesy porn stars from the '70's.

I think they're on their way to a skating party at a gay disco. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The problem isn't being on a different planet. The problem is the decision on all sides, around 1980, to go back to the same old planet, where we remain stuck today. Sometimes norms themselves change, and when you're experimenting, not everything works. But even this would be a price worth paying to have a world that felt freer, where a song like "Frankenstein" can make #1 on the Top 40 chart. (Besides, this isn't even really daily wear for the '70s.) Meanwhile, today's orgy of crewcuts, trilby hats, plaid shirts and shorts--a look about 60 years old--is at least as ridiculous (if for other reasons) and even less justifiable.

Note to you young folks; the photos on the left (A, B, C) are jumpsuits. They are one-piece garments, you step in and then button or zip up. They also came in women's versions. They were a total pain when you had to use the toilet, the garment often dragged on the floor as you sat on the toilet, gathering hair, drips, and crud. True. No, they did not have drop-seats.

I cannot fathom why any designer thought a man would want to wear a leotard. The other guys, particularly the black guy in the left-hand ad, were dressed to disco and boogie down. Though I can't understand why the men in the right-hand ad were in bare feet...?

In the picture on the right, the guy in the middle is Gordon Grant (a pornstar) and on the far right is Bill Cable (aka Stoner) who, according to Wikipedia was "a model, actor and film stuntman". He also posed for physique magazines. He died in 1998 in a motorcycle accident.

It's quite a feat to pull off looking tough in a floral print shirt.

All of the models are saying to themselves "Your not paying me enough to dress this ugly." Aerioudly, everyone wore to-night Levis.
