Skateboarding In 1970s California During The Golden Age Of Skate Culture
Skateboarding culture in California in the 1970s has left an indelible mark on the sport and on America’s cultural identity, and photographer Hugh Holland perfectly captured the spirit of this golden age in his beautiful street photography album – Locals Only: California Skateboarding 1975-1978.
Curiously enough, the drought that hit California in the 1970s played a huge part in skateboarding history. Swimming pools and drainage ditches lay empty and dry, allowing kids to carve them up with their skateboards, some of which were simply coarse wooden boards with wheels – a far cry from today’s laminated creations.
Though Holland wasn’t a skateboarder, he still spent three years following these kids to document their unique 70s style subculture. His vintage photos can be found on Amazon, so if you want a glimpse into this by-gone golden age, check these cool photos out!

"Dogtown and Z-Boys" is the documentary by Stacy Peralta with actual film of the original Zephyr crew. "Lords of Dogtown " was just a Hollywood remake of the story, and is much less interesting.
Thanx 4 the memreeze......2nd part of the 70s,I had a Sunski board with ACS500 trux+red polyurethane wheels,1st in Bondi to own 1.....got to ride it occasionally,cozz everyone else(school+surf M8s)were riding it........lol
No tattoos anywhere to be seen. I never realized how beautiful people are without the ugly stain of tattoos.
wish someone had old photo's of myself and Sam always skating freestyle at the Newport and Huntington Piers back around 1975-76
Santa Monica was the center of the universe back then. Well, if you lived there. Surfing, rollerskating, skateboarding... If you were bored it was your own damn fault.
