1,400-Year-Old Chinese Ginkgo Tree Drops Leaves That Drown Buddhist Temple In A Yellow Ocean
A 1,400-year-old ginkgo tree in China has recently drawn thousands of people from all over the country. Golden leaves have been falling on the ground since mid-November, turning the temple’s ground into a yellow ocean. The ancient tree grows next to the Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple in the Zhongnan Mountains and is a perfect celebration of autumn.
The ginkgo tree, also known as the maidenhair, is sometimes referred to as a “living fossil” because, despite all the drastic climate changes, it has remained unchanged for more than 200 million years. It is a living link to the times when the dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Ever had to rake ginkgo leaves? They're heavy and tough and a pain in the butt. Ginkgos drop their leaves all at once (over 1 or 2 days), which doesn't help. My parents have one in their front yard, and the fallen leaves, if left too long, kill the grass underneath it.
Load More Replies...The species really is that old though? There are fossils of gingko trees that are around 270 million years old. They are like the tree equivalent of crocodiles largely unchanged for millions of years do to just how good they are at surviving.
Load More Replies...I planted a gingko tree from a two inch seedling i found in the grass on a school campus (under a full grown gingko tree). No idea it had such an ancient history. It survived the "transplant" and grew into a fine tree.
So beautiful, this is why j want to travel. To see the most beautiful thing you could imagine. That's the most beautiful tree I have ever.
Type 150 year old wisteria tree Japan into Google.... you're welcome. It's technically not a tree as Wisteria is a vine, but it is stunning.

There is an avenue in Tokyo lined with these trees called Meiji Jingu Gaien. It is one of the most beautiful avenues I have had the pleasure of walking in.
I wonder if that person meant it SMELLS like an explosive septic tank. Ginko seeds have a very bad odor.
