I Am A 11-Year-Old Quadriplegic And These Are Poems About The Hardship Of Being Me
In 2017 I was in a car with my sister, mother and step dad. We were driving along the highway when a truck came along the other side of the side of the road. Because it was raining and the truck was going quite fast they slammed into our car tipping it upside down. I broke my back while luckily my sister, mother and step dad survived with minor injuries. I was rushed to hospital and put in a induced coma for 3 weeks. I became a quadriplegic.
During the 7 months that I was in hospital and then 3 months of in and out check ups and rehab one of the nurses helped me to write poems. I am not prepared to release them all yet but here are a few. I will release more when I am prepared to do so.
In the hospital…

Wow Matilda, that must be so hard. You are soo strong and sound like a fighter, and an amazing young woman. Keep going strong, and show the world your talent in poetry. You go girl!!!!!
Thank you for baring your soul, Tilly! You a very brave, courageous person. Big hugs and lots of love.
Oh, I forgot to include an article about how it's possible to be a quadraplegic coder. Check this out, there are so many computer science careers you could really do well in! https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/techflash/2015/06/one-letter-at-a-time-quadriplegic-coder-looks-back.html
Bless you, Tilly. There are so many ways you can be a biologist. I'm getting my PhD in biology and most of what I do is behind a computer-- looking at data, creating models, etc. A really good way for you to pursue this is to take math courses (especially statistics!). I can't address your other interests, but it is *definitely* possible to be a biologist :) Good luck, and keep your head high!
You write with a simple honesty. Thank you for sharing these. I'd love to read more of your poetry when you're ready!
Keep rocking that courage of yours!!! I don't even come close to what you've overcome. But I understand. I too was in an induced coma after a Grade 5 brain aneurysm in 2015. I do walk with a cane now but life ain't easy when you can't wipe your own a*s. I think it's quite important that you've shared this!
Writing and being able to express your feelings this way will be a great tool for you in life. Good for you!
You are an inspiration. You did not use your injuries as an excuse for helplessness. Keep writing, be inspired both on the negative and positive, be inspired with being brave and a survivor. You can be whatever you want to be. A columnist, a journalist, a novelist, a writer, a laureate, an author of textbooks. The posibilities are endless. Afterall, a national hero said, "The pen is mightier than the sword".
Beautiful and to the point.love your poetry.would love to see you poetry collection published.
Thanks for posting this Tilly! I'm glad you have such supportive friends, family, nurses and doctors. I hope everyone gets to read these--
