I realize these children are taking this seriously but I think the texts are hilarious. In the 50's, when I was 11, there were always children who tried to be grown up enough to "go steady". It was harmless "puppy-love" & this is no different. These children seem perfectly normal to me.

This is pretty much business as usual. My 11 year old daughter is the unofficial psychologist for her friends, and she shares their little manufacturerd dramas with me. They are playing "dress up" for dating... As she jokes, these "dating" couples aren't really going out, they are hanging out in public places and chatting, and making up drama for their preteen amusement. Also, they aren't drinking expresso at Starbucks, but having their pseudo milkshakes, like cotton candy frapuccinos and smoothies, or green tea. And before falling into the cliche of condemning the next generation, they DO read, voraciously, the young adult adventurer novels, which is why they are more into the dramatic relationship department. They all want to be characters in The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars and whatnot. That's a little more sophisticated than playing Barbies in the basement. Different, not the end of civilization.

And let me be the first to say that even if this is par for the course, meaningless pre-teen drama, or innocent puppy love, our younger generations have far greater means than those before us. As one of hefty psychological knowledge, this kid will remember this, and probably used this as a huge fracture that could have torn away a friendship with this boy in the future. It may be normal in modern childhood culture, but that only makes it all the worse.
