When I was a kid in NJ, we kept seeing these weird things (ours were usually a brownish color) going across things like the concrete foundation of the house, or areas of the patio. Sometimes we would find them between stones of the patio, going straight up - like the road to nowhere lol - and then they just stopped, these weird, tiny tubes. Nobody knew what they were until my parents called a pest control guy. Termites do this because they cannot be exposed to light. So, if they need to get from one place to another and there is something they can't chew or burrow through in the way, they bring their environment with them by building these tube-like structures through which they can move. The make them out of various things, I suppose whatever is handy - and stick them together with their saliva, one grain-of-sand sized piece at a time.

Yes I know it because my grandfather was a slave to a British officer and this was his daily job at the British Architect's office in Indian railways. But inspite of being a slave my grandfather was treated nicely and after independence he even got a job in Indian Railways..which eventually my father got because my grandfather died on job...
