We Explore Life On Oil Platforms- Repurposing Natures Most Unlikely Silver Lining

There comes a time when the useful life of an oil rig comes to an end, at least when it comes to drilling for oil, and that’s when we dive in! We are not your typical diving duo. We are marine scientists and co-founders of Blue Latitudes LLC, who dive on active oil rigs to explore the artificial reefs that thrive below the surface.

We are seeking 15k on Indiegogo to preserve and document these unique habitats around the world, and create a documentary on our travels from Scotland, to the Gulf of Mexico and into the cold waters of California. Offshore energy development is a reality, removing these oil and gas structures destroys precious blue water habitats, and creates an enormous carbon footprint as they are towed around the world to be broken down.

This short film will investigate the pros and cons of repurposing abandoned offshore platforms as artificial reefs to enhance biodiversity and fisheries productivity in California. Our purpose in creating this film is to empower the public and policy makers to make informed decisions on Assembly Bill (AB) 2503, the “Rigs-to-Reefs” bill, which is up for legislative debate in California. AB 2503 encompasses 23 of the 27 platforms scheduled to be decommissioned in the next 2-10 years.
