Stop-motion animator Kevin Parry shared a small and clever video illusion titled “Walk in the Woods” has many people scratching their heads. It’s a loop showing Parry walking repeatedly in a mirror in a forest and emerging “other side”.

The video has been seen more than 100,000 times since Parry originally posted it a week ago. While Parry would not disclose the complete description / explanation of how he created the illusion, he shared some of the basic details with us.

“The video is made up of a single shot, duplicated, and I had to make sure my start and end points were aligned when shooting,” Parry tells PetaPixel. “There’s a bit of digital tricks in that I had to bend the ends of the matching clips, but there’s a hard cut in it (with just a few boxes dissolving). But I did not do the green screen or mask anything.

Everything was shot with a Sony a7S II and Zeiss Batis 18mm f / 2.8 lens.

“I often have to scale and transform the footage when editing these types of clips together, so I’m going to use a wide lens and shoot 4K,” says Parry. That gives me a lot of space to play.

“I’ve been wanting to make this illusion for some time, but I waited until I could film it in a place more exciting than my house,” he continues. “I made an early morning trip at 5:30 am in the Oregon Forest with the mirror and filmed before anyone was on the road.”

Take a look and see if you can imagine how the illusion was created (using a minimal digital trick):
