Everyone remembers Laika, the dog the Soviets sent into orbit with no way of bringing her back. But Laika was preceded dozens of canine cosmonauts, nearly half of whom died, and followed into orbit by Belka and Strelka, who became pop stars in the USSR after their victorious landing.
