Towards the end of 2014, we had completed shooting the Time of the Elves, after all the edits where done, we started thinking about what should be our next project. Carri came up with the idea of why don’t we look at England’s pagan past and explore the traditions that make up the holidays that we still celebrate in the 21st century. The Pagan calendar is closely attuned to the natural rhythms and cycles of nature and the passing seasons. As a result, there are 8 points in the year which are seen as having specific significance – and these are the 8 we set our selves the task to capture.

Normally, a large production can take unto 6 months to prepare. For the Pagan Calendar, we had just about 2 months between each set as we wanted to be as true as possible, photographing around the correct time of year. All the research, costume design, props and location scouting had to be fitted in around our 9-5 working week.

So without further ado, Lunaesque is proud to present The Pagan Calender, starting with our latest set – Samhain (31st October-1st November). In the Pagan calendar Samhain marks the Feast of the Dead. A liminal time, when the laws of time and space are temporarily suspended.
