Retezat National Park is a must for passionate hikers and wilderness enthusiasts. It’s a true Carpathian rock fortress with 20 peaks over 2.000 meters and a maximum altitude of 2.509 reached on Peleaga Peak. Hiking here is a one-of-a-kind experience as its trails are bordered by over 80 glacial lakes and tarns, including the largest lake of this kind in Romania, Bucura (8.8 ha) and the deepest, Zanoaga (29 meters).
It’s the place to be for bird watching passionate as half of Romania’s bird species are found here, along with almost 1.200 plant species and a wide variety of endangered plants and spectacular wildlife. This is the first national park of Romania, a UNESCO Reservation of the Biosphere and one of the best conserved wild areas in the Carpathians.
Experiencing intense adventures in Retezat National Park is definitely an attraction point for nature lovers and adventurous hikers. Its biodiversity and numerous trails, bordered by glacial lakes, ascending to its high and rocky peaks make it a great wilderness destination for the holidays.
My first experience in Retezat was in August 2014 in a photo tour. We spent a week in the mountains, full of adventures and memories. Here I saw the first marmots and chamois.
