Maps Reveals Europe’s Most Racist Countries, And You Won’t Like It
As the European migrant crisis surges on, the attitudes of European countries’ citizens toward ethnic minorities continue to shift and evolve. But just how comfortable would they be with their child pursuing a romantic relationship with someone from a different cultural group?
Back in 2015, the European Commission asked people from all 28 EU member states this very question about interracial couples, among several others, and compiled the resulting data to produce a surprisingly damning report on racial discrimination. On August 12th, 2017, a Reddit user named Bezzleford, who is well-known for creating statistical (and sometimes humorous) maps, decided to draft up a visual component to the report in a Europe map – and now it’s going viral, attracting over 18 thousand upvotes after it was re-posted by Latvian user blueeyedblonde69.
Though these shades of red and green highlighting racism in Europe might come as a shock to some, what’s wilder is that they only represent 4 of the questions asked. According to the original EC study, less than half of all respondents stated that they would approve of their children dating a Roma person, or even a transgender person. Though racism clearly remains a widespread social issue in some regions, the majority of respondents also agreed that new measures should be introduced to protect visible minorities, proving that the EU is still an excellent example for the rest of the world on human rights issues.

Д. Н. Альшиц. Начало самодержавия в России. Государство Ивана Грозного. СПб.: Наука, 2019 Кто написал? За без малого век жизни Даниил Натанович Альшиц (1919—2012) очень много успел. Первая публикация — 48-страничная брошюра о Татаро-монгольском нашествии —вышла в 1939 году в «Библиотеке красноармейца». Последняя прижизненная, в 2010 году, — военные воспоминания об обороне Ленинграда. Историк, драматург, сатирик и замечательный источниковед Альщиц испытал на «собственной шкуре» весь ХХ век, включая ленинградскую блокаду, 10 лет в лагерях (отсидел половину) по статье 58-10 («Пропаганда или агитация, содержащие призыв к свержению, подрыву или ослаблению Советской власти или к совершению отдельных контрреволюционных преступлений и т. п.»). А еще 35 лет работы в отделе рукописей Государственной Публичной библиотеки им. М. Е. Салтыкова-Щедрина, преподавание и даже некоторое научное хулиганство — якобы Альшиц нашел в неразобранных архивах 10-ю главу «Евгения Онегина», которую, конечно, написал сам. Книга, как следует из названия, описывает становление самодержавия при Иване Грозном. Этапы этого процесса, его фазы и последствия. Для Даниила Натановича очень важна работа с источниками, документами эпохи. Архивисту исторический документ может рассказать больше, чем раскопки, и он прилежно старается донести «речь» документа до читателя. Зачем читать? «Начало самодержавии в России» — прекрасный пример глубокой книги, написанной просто, но не упрощенно. Книга заставляет голову работать, но не дает «взяток» читателю. Сам жанр книги, к сожалению, достаточно редкий по нынешним временам. Альшиц показывает, что Иван Грозный легитимизировал свою самодержавную власть совершенно обдумано, манипулируя источниками и формируя новую государственную идеологию; как опричнина занимает все большую и большую роль в государстве, прорастая из всего лишь системы управления личных вотчин царя; как Иоанн «задабривает», «подкупает» боярство и чем обернулись эти дары. Фактически до определенного момента Россия — по Альшицу — совмещала в себе два государства, старое боярское и новое, управляемое опричниной самодержавие, и так продолжалось до тех пор, пока молодая система управления не поглотила древнюю. «Одним из важнейших направлений в идеологической борьбе Грозного за установление единовластия было историческое обоснование исконности русского самодержавия. Зачем читать? Ганзейский союз зародился в рассвет Средневековья в XII веке, а окончательно распался лишь в 1669 году — за 34 года до основания Санкт-Петербурга. Страсбургский историк показывает, что коммерческий союз был успешен, союз городов стал необходимостью, а в новое время сетевая структура не справилась с зарождающимся новым, не феодальным порядком. Тем удивительнее, что «аморфное сообщество» (автор считает, что именно так следует называть Ганзу), не имевшее ни армии, ни флота, ни собственной валюты, властвовало 500 лет от Новгорода до Лондона. Доллингер обращает особое внимание на поздний период феномена и подходит к исследованию Ганзейского союза, исходя не из богатства городов, а из их влияния на соседние территории и движения товаров. Так, Лондон и Новгород существенно повлияли на успех Ганзы, но в том числе из-за них же Ганза и закатилась. «Товары с Востока, которые провозили через Зунд в западную Европу, оставались примерно теми же, что были в XIV и XV вв. Юрий Викторович Чайковский (1940) — ученый разносторонний, чаще его считают эволюционистом, хотя Арктика давно входит в сферу его научных интересов. Автор множества статей и книг во многом интересен как тип ученого, которой не скрывается в пыльном кабинете, а «при всем честном народе» умеет ясно и остро сформулировать вопрос и затем продемонстрирует методы, посредством которых он этот вопрос будет решать. О чем книга? Книга состоит из 8 очерков и приложений к ним. Очерки посвящены некоторым «темным местам» в истории освоения Арктики, которые оказались незамеченными или проигнорированными другими исследователями. Например, Чайковский расследует судьбу легендарной дюбель-шлюпки судна «Якутск», на котором плавал Челюскин, обогнувший Таймыр (Дэну Симмонсу при известной сноровке документального материла хватило бы еще на один «Террор»). Издание снабжено картами, что важно, — и большим количеством иллюстраций. Зачем читать? Если бы в книге было не 350 страниц, а автор ограничился бы 5 первыми, где описывает метод, подходы к исследованию, то чтение уже бы вышло душеспасительным. Если бы обложка книги вышла просто как открытка, ее бы уже стоило приобрести. Там красуется карта России с совершенно нехарактерной разверсткой: Северный полюс — слева, и от него разбегаются меридианы; Восток — наверху, а Запад — внизу. В левом нижнем углу примостился норвежский Тромсё, в верхнем левом — Аляска, в верхнем правом — Хоккайдо. Только вот европейская часть России на эту карту не поместилась, и проблема не в ошибке проекции, а только в необычном представлении. Чайковский замечает, что история освоения Арктики в основном пишется полярниками, которые (надо отметить в качестве исключения книгу «Арктические зеркала» Юрия Слезкина) знают Север и его неизбежные лишения, но совершено не способны анализировать исторический контекст, в котором путешествовали их предшественники. В исторических исследованиях освоения Севера и Сибири не учитываются изменения климата и морали, которые произошли за 300 лет. И это тем страннее, если в исследованиях Европы и европейской России эти и множество других факторов игнорировать просто неприлично. Юрий Викторович показывает, что первооткрыватели Русской Арктики, к несчастью, больше терпели лишения и если вступали в противоборство, то чаще с властью и друг другом, чем с природой. Ну а Север часто оставался наблюдателем победивших и проигравших — наблюдателем ледяным, безразличным, жестоким. «Самыми воинственными запомнились русским на севере западносибирской Арктики энцы, почти истребленные в XVII веке, видимо, как раз за это. Но Аника начал освоение севера Сибири именно среди энцев, и о воине с ними ничего при нем не слышно. Нет, он отнюдь не был добр, охотно и умело разорял недавних партнеров, бывал даже жесток. Зато его государство в государстве вело более умную, чем вся Россия, восточную политику — Строгановы понимали, что на вновь занятой земле им придется самим жить. А вот первопроходцы, о ком пишут куда как больше, явно не понимали этого, как не понимали этого и власти: все самозабвенно рушили то, в чем жили. Зоя Владимировна Юркова — архитектор, историк архитектуры, в 1990-х и нулевых работала в Комитете по государственному контролю, использованию и охране памятников истории и культуры, автор книг и множества статей об истории Петербурга. Словом, замечательный исследователь, влюбленный в свой город. О чем книга? Книга рассказывает о совершенно забытом широкой публикой французском архитекторе Антуане Франсуа Модюи, который работал в Санкт-Петербурге при дворе Александра I и серьезнейшим образом повлиял на облик Северной столицы, который мы знаем и любим. Юркова, опираясь на огромный объем документов, исследует архитектурную концепцию столицы империи, сложившуюся вовсе не при Петре, а при Александре I усилиями французского архитектора, совершенно затерявшегося в тени гения Карла Росси. При этом автор усиленно подчеркивает ту важнейшую роль, которую император сыграл в формировании видов города как заказчик. Зачем читать? Город в устье Невы всегда и по праву будут называть Градом Петровым — в честь воли великого царя, заложившего столицу в малопригодных для жизни местах. Великой реализованной утопией. Наверное, еще до пушкинского «Медного всадника» никто не сомневался, чей это город. Однако, когда мы представляем Петербург, мы чаще всего вспоминаем не Трезини, а величественные сооружения другой эпохи — первой трети века XIX. Анализируя архитектуру города, мы видим его единство и монолитность, торжественность. Но ведь это не наследие Петра. Таким город стал по воле и замыслу двух людей — Александра I и архитектора. Несмотря на устойчивый миф — дескать, город строился сразу «вот таким», — именно Модюи, как бы сейчас сказали, внося свои коррективы, сумел добиться уникальной градостроительной целостности. Планы Питера петровского, екатерининского и александровского не были друг другу созвучны и требовали тончайшей настройки. Виды площадей, павильоны, архитектурные рифмы кажутся нам естественными. В этом Зоя Владимировна и видит гений Модюи. Быть может, это слишком живописная метафора, но, наверное, утрата памяти об архитекторе говорит о его органическом, полном вхождении в тело города. Автор научного, но и захватывающего труда возвращает нам имя одного из творцов Петербурга, показывая, каким трудом и искусством достигается «простая» гармония. «В развитии великорусского социума громадная роль принадлежит природно-климатическому и шире — географическому фактору. Поскольку Россия — земледельческая страна с суровым климатом и неплодородными землями, то «весь образ жизни населения исторического ядра территории России был процессом выживания, постоянного создания условий для удовлетворения только самых необходимых, из века в век практически одних и тех же потребностей». В жестких природно-климатических условиях при неплодородных землях и, соответственно, низкой урожайности прежде всего требовалось «договариваться» с местонахождением и природным окружением, которыми человек не мог управлять и к которым он вынужден был приспосабливаться. Отсюда и ментальность поведения — суеверный страх перед непредсказуемыми погодными колебаниями и всем тем, что, по мнению крестьянина, могло повлиять на урожай и, соответственно, на физическое существование его самого и его семьи. Отсюда же нежелание что-либо менять, использовать что-то новое, дабы не нарушить хрупкое равновесие сил, от которых зависела судьба урожая, а значит, и выживание. Поэтому у нас такое множество передающихся из поколения в поколение народных примет о погоде, о видах на урожай. По своей сути русское христианство оставалось языческим — наши православные всегда верили в сглаз и порчу и имели обширный бестиарий, тесно связанный с окружением. Всем известен сон Татьяны Лариной, в котором она видит странные существа и необычных лесных обитателей. В школьной практике он до сих пор трактуется как сатира на провинциальное светское общество и сравнивается с балом у Лариных, куда явилась местная элита. Ajven amen. I'm Italian and while we have TOO MANY mohammedans in our country, our culture, society and government have it well set up to keep them in their place. There is a crucifix in every classroom, mandatory religius instruction and public displays of Catholicism and secularism at every turn. And with the exception of the buffoon Renzi, the government has done a great job of no allowing new mosques. This keeps the numbers of mohammedans low since most mohammedans just don't want to live around such a country.

I'm italian and i'm surely no muslim so that doesn't touch me directly, but that's an incorrect notion, that's from one of the fakes islam's holy books, real Muslims know the difference between the fake islam prophets and the "real" ones, some of their prophets are higly regarded as blatant propagandist so their books are not considered the word of god at all between educated people. Having something against muslims isn't racist, because muslims aren't a race.
Jews can't be a race; they come from all different backgrounds. Ashkenazi may be an ethnicity, but having that ancestry doesn't necessarily mean you are Jewish. I think Jewish is a religious and perhaps cultural destination, and even though many people will disagree with this, I don't that having Ashkenazi ancestry means you are automatically Jewish just because of Nazi ideology and the alt-right political views.

Being Jewish is a race. It's also a religion but it is definitely a race. You can, for example, be a Catholic Jew but you can not be a Jewish Catholic. Catholicism is a religion, but the Jewish people are a race. Hitler put Jewish Catholics, Protestants, Atheists, etc in concentration camps because of their race. It wasn't really about the religious aspects (though that was of course used against them as anything they did was).

Genetic studies suggest that only 35% of women who identify as Jewish, have a DNA marker tying them back to the Israelites. The % is much higher amongst men identifying as Jewish... around 65%. So this means that only about 50% of Jews are genetically Jewish/Semitic. Throughout history, Jews were mostly killed by Christians, not Muslims. And they were killed because of religion and cultural differences. If Jews assimilated into the countries they lived in, converted to Christianity and married gentile women, you wouldn't know they were Jewish. So how can they be a race of people?

Strictly speaking, Judaism isn't quite the same as other religions, we ARE a race as well as a religion (this is causing us problems now); because I am Ashkenazi Jewish, I have a certain genetic profile, I have genetic predispositions toward certain diseases, etc. We are distinct genetic group. So, actually, anti-semitism is a pretty bad example here, since it could very technically be termed racism. That said, bigotry is bigotry, and it's all bad!

After doing work on ancestry.com, I traced my family back to the 1700s and It's likely because of their last names (Levi, Rothschild, Weissglass, Kramer, Katz etc), that they were all Jewish. So I'm most likely genetically Jewish as well. That being said I am tall and very white, and people ask me if I'm German when traveling abroad. So what is "race" really? Everybody in the world has mixed genetics. Race is a myth perpetuated for political and economic reasons.

Not really. If I have something against someone because of their beliefs (like neo-nazis for example) it doesn't make me racist. Racism is about race or colour, yes, but not beliefs. There is probably another word for prejudice against a certain religion, but I don't know what that is.

Sondre-- Except that race does not exist. It's not a category with any basis whatsoever in science. Race is a social construct; the concept of race is only a couple of hundred years old. Muslims can be racialized in the same way that any group (Black, White, Asian, Jews, etc.) is. Racializing is a 3-step process: (1) identify one characteristic of a person, (2) mentally group that person together with everyone who shares that characteristic and draw a line around that group, and (3) define that group based on assumptions and stereotypes in a hierarchy of inferiority or superiority in relation to yourself. That is what racism is. And racism can be targeted toward any group.

Even if "racist" comes from the noun "race", it is not only used for describing hate against races, but different sort of groups: People sharing a certain racial origin, a language, a skin color etc. or another external condition they didn't choose to be born with or to live with. Not true. Most black people in South Africa don't mind a white person marrying into the family. It's "white" people that usually have a problem with "non-white" people marrying into their families. Mostly Afrikaans-speaking white people in South Africa are like that.

My white non-denomination American cousin married a black Muslim man from a west African country. His village and family all came out for their wedding that took place first and my family/her friends have no problems, we welcomed him with open arms for their wedding state side. I know it's only 2 people but my hope is that that counts for something in this world and can be a part of a greater good as this world progresses.
That's rare. Most blacks in the world, not just. Africa, seem to not want their people marrying white people. I'm a half-Irish "half-breed" and I have a worse go of it around black people than around some whites, at least once I have to TELL the whites I'm half "theirs." Like when I'm sitting up at the Irish Embassy I seem to frequent whenever I go anywhere and get my bag stolen or confiscated by authorities because they think the Irish passport is "not mine." Because I don't "look Irish" like my white-redheaded-frecklefaced-FATHER.

Д. Н. Альшиц. Начало самодержавия в России. Государство Ивана Грозного. СПб.: Наука, 2019 Кто написал? За без малого век жизни Даниил Натанович Альшиц (1919—2012) очень много успел. Первая публикация — 48-страничная брошюра о Татаро-монгольском нашествии —вышла в 1939 году в «Библиотеке красноармейца». Последняя прижизненная, в 2010 году, — военные воспоминания об обороне Ленинграда. Историк, драматург, сатирик и замечательный источниковед Альщиц испытал на «собственной шкуре» весь ХХ век, включая ленинградскую блокаду, 10 лет в лагерях (отсидел половину) по статье 58-10 («Пропаганда или агитация, содержащие призыв к свержению, подрыву или ослаблению Советской власти или к совершению отдельных контрреволюционных преступлений и т. п.»). Юрий Викторович Чайковский (1940) — ученый разносторонний, чаще его считают эволюционистом, хотя Арктика давно входит в сферу его научных интересов. Автор множества статей и книг во многом интересен как тип ученого, которой не скрывается в пыльном кабинете, а «при всем честном народе» умеет ясно и остро сформулировать вопрос и затем продемонстрирует методы, посредством которых он этот вопрос будет решать. О чем книга? Книга состоит из 8 очерков и приложений к ним. Очерки посвящены некоторым «темным местам» в истории освоения Арктики, которые оказались незамеченными или проигнорированными другими исследователями. Например, Чайковский расследует судьбу легендарной дюбель-шлюпки судна «Якутск», на котором плавал Челюскин, обогнувший Таймыр (Дэну Симмонсу при известной сноровке документального материла хватило бы еще на один «Террор»). Издание снабжено картами, что важно, — и большим количеством иллюстраций. Зачем читать? Если бы в книге было не 350 страниц, а автор ограничился бы 5 первыми, где описывает метод, подходы к исследованию, то чтение уже бы вышло душеспасительным. Если бы обложка книги вышла просто как открытка, ее бы уже стоило приобрести. Там красуется карта России с совершенно нехарактерной разверсткой: Северный полюс — слева, и от него разбегаются меридианы; Восток — наверху, а Запад — внизу. В левом нижнем углу примостился норвежский Тромсё, в верхнем левом — Аляска, в верхнем правом — Хоккайдо. Только вот европейская часть России на эту карту не поместилась, и проблема не в ошибке проекции, а только в необычном представлении. Чайковский замечает, что история освоения Арктики в основном пишется полярниками, которые (надо отметить в качестве исключения книгу «Арктические зеркала» Юрия Слезкина) знают Север и его неизбежные лишения, но совершено не способны анализировать исторический контекст, в котором путешествовали их предшественники. В исторических исследованиях освоения Севера и Сибири не учитываются изменения климата и морали, которые произошли за 300 лет. Зоя Владимировна Юркова — архитектор, историк архитектуры, в 1990-х и нулевых работала в Комитете по государственному контролю, использованию и охране памятников истории и культуры, автор книг и множества статей об истории Петербурга. Словом, замечательный исследователь, влюбленный в свой город. О чем книга? Книга рассказывает о совершенно забытом широкой публикой французском архитекторе Антуане Франсуа Модюи, который работал в Санкт-Петербурге при дворе Александра I и серьезнейшим образом повлиял на облик Северной столицы, который мы знаем и любим. Юркова, опираясь на огромный объем документов, исследует архитектурную концепцию столицы империи, сложившуюся вовсе не при Петре, а при Александре I усилиями французского архитектора, совершенно затерявшегося в тени гения Карла Росси. При этом автор усиленно подчеркивает ту важнейшую роль, которую император сыграл в формировании видов города как заказчик. Зачем читать? Город в устье Невы всегда и по праву будут называть Градом Петровым — в честь воли великого царя, заложившего столицу в малопригодных для жизни местах. Великой реализованной утопией. Наверное, еще до пушкинского «Медного всадника» никто не сомневался, чей это город. Однако, когда мы представляем Петербург, мы чаще всего вспоминаем не Трезини, а величественные сооружения другой эпохи — первой трети века XIX. Анализируя архитектуру города, мы видим его единство и монолитность, торжественность. Но ведь это не наследие Петра. Таким город стал по воле и замыслу двух людей — Александра I и архитектора. Несмотря на устойчивый миф — дескать, город строился сразу «вот таким», — именно Модюи, как бы сейчас сказали, внося свои коррективы, сумел добиться уникальной градостроительной целостности. Планы Питера петровского, екатерининского и александровского не были друг другу созвучны и требовали тончайшей настройки. Виды площадей, павильоны, архитектурные рифмы кажутся нам естественными. В этом Зоя Владимировна и видит гений Модюи. Быть может, это слишком живописная метафора, но, наверное, утрата памяти об архитекторе говорит о его органическом, полном вхождении в тело города. Автор научного, но и захватывающего труда возвращает нам имя одного из творцов Петербурга, показывая, каким трудом и искусством достигается «простая» гармония. «В развитии великорусского социума громадная роль принадлежит природно-климатическому и шире — географическому фактору. Поскольку Россия — земледельческая страна с суровым климатом и неплодородными землями, то «весь образ жизни населения исторического ядра территории России был процессом выживания, постоянного создания условий для удовлетворения только самых необходимых, из века в век практически одних и тех же потребностей». В жестких природно-климатических условиях при неплодородных землях и, соответственно, низкой урожайности прежде всего требовалось «договариваться» с местонахождением и природным окружением, которыми человек не мог управлять и к которым он вынужден был приспосабливаться. Отсюда и ментальность поведения — суеверный страх перед непредсказуемыми погодными колебаниями и всем тем, что, по мнению крестьянина, могло повлиять на урожай и, соответственно, на физическое существование его самого и его семьи. Отсюда же нежелание что-либо менять, использовать что-то новое, дабы не нарушить хрупкое равновесие сил, от которых зависела судьба урожая, а значит, и выживание. Поэтому у нас такое множество передающихся из поколения в поколение народных примет о погоде, о видах на урожай. По своей сути русское христианство оставалось языческим — наши православные всегда верили в сглаз и порчу и имели обширный бестиарий, тесно связанный с окружением. Всем известен сон Татьяны Лариной, в котором она видит странные существа и необычных лесных обитателей. Ajven amen. I'm Italian and while we have TOO MANY mohammedans in our country, our culture, society and government have it well set up to keep them in their place. There is a crucifix in every classroom, mandatory religius instruction and public displays of Catholicism and secularism at every turn. And with the exception of the buffoon Renzi, the government has done a great job of no allowing new mosques. This keeps the numbers of mohammedans low since most mohammedans just don't want to live around such a country.

Having something against muslims isn't racist, because muslims aren't a race.
Jews can't be a race; they come from all different backgrounds. Ashkenazi may be an ethnicity, but having that ancestry doesn't necessarily mean you are Jewish. I think Jewish is a religious and perhaps cultural destination, and even though many people will disagree with this, I don't that having Ashkenazi ancestry means you are automatically Jewish just because of Nazi ideology and the alt-right political views.

Strictly speaking, Judaism isn't quite the same as other religions, we ARE a race as well as a religion (this is causing us problems now); because I am Ashkenazi Jewish, I have a certain genetic profile, I have genetic predispositions toward certain diseases, etc. We are distinct genetic group. That is what racism is. And racism can be targeted toward any group.

My white non-denomination American cousin married a black Muslim man from a west African country. His village and family all came out for their wedding that took place first and my family/her friends have no problems, we welcomed him with open arms for their wedding state side. I know it's only 2 people but my hope is that that counts for something in this world and can be a part of a greater good as this world progresses.
That's rare. Most blacks in the world, not just. Africa, seem to not want their people marrying white people. I'm a half-Irish "half-breed" and I have a worse go of it around black people than around some whites, at least once I have to TELL the whites I'm half "theirs." Like when I'm sitting up at the Irish Embassy I seem to frequent whenever I go anywhere and get my bag stolen or confiscated by authorities because they think the Irish passport is "not mine." Because I don't "look Irish" like my white-redheaded-frecklefaced-FATHER.

No, it's really that they don't want a white person in their family. Especially if it's their daughter "marrying out." People won't tell me why, they look at me like I'm supposed to know why without being told. I could never explain it to my Russian husband so I just simply told him I was an orphan and that my hundreds of Irish relatives are all over the world anyway so never mind trying to locate them let alone meet any of them.
