According to the website PsychMechanics, there are some basics about the psychology of selfishness that we all should know:

A selfish person is the one who puts his own needs first. He's primarily concerned with himself and seeks out only those activities that fulfill his own desires and wants. Anything wrong with that? I don’t think so.

Going by that definition, we're all selfish in one way or the other. All of us want to do things that are ultimately for our own good and well-being. This type of selfishness is good and desirable.

So far so good. The problem arises when we do things for ourselves and at the same time ignore the needs of those around us or when we fulfill our needs at the expense of others. When you make life difficult for others to meet your own ends, then that kind of selfishness is the selfishness that you’d like to avoid.

They shouldn't be allowed to leave without paying the damage. It is obvious they broke many things. It's the same as eating food from aisles in supermarket, you can't damage it, make it useless then leave.

There are several reasons that could make someone selfish...

A person who holds on to his resources and doesn't give it to the needy can be considered a selfish person and this is the type of selfishness that we commonly refer to when we say that someone is selfish.

When we say that someone is selfish, we usually mean that he doesn't share his resources (money, time, etc.). Now, why won’t a person share his resources, even if it's the best thing to do in a given situation?

The biggest reason is that he thinks he doesn't have enough. A selfish person, therefore, is also likely to be stingy. This insecurity of not having enough motivates a person to hold on to his resources and not share them.

Another reason is a fear of losing control. If someone has many needs and goals, then he overvalues his resources because he thinks that these resources are going to help him reach his goals. If he loses his resources, he loses his goals and if he loses his goals he feels he has lost control over his life.

For example, a student who doesn't share his study notes with others is the one who has high academic goals and sharing notes could mean losing an important resource that could help him reach his goal. And not being able to reach your goals is a perfect recipe for a feeling of loss of control over your life.

In other cases, the way a person was raised can also make him act in selfish ways. The only child or the child whose every demand was met by his parents (spoilt child) learns to take as much as he can and give very little back.

Such children learn to care only for their needs with little empathy or consideration for others. As children, we were all like that to some extent but gradually we began to learn that other people have emotions too and so developed empathy.

Some people never learn empathy and therefore remain selfish, just like when they were kids.

Rainy_Day_May Report

The most important thing to do when dealing with a selfish reason is to figure out the reason for his selfishness and then work on eliminating that reason.

All other methods and efforts of dealing with him are going to be in vain. Ask yourselves questions like...Why is he being selfish? What is he feeling so insecure about? Are you making unrealistic demands of him? Is he really in a position to meet your demands?

We are often too quick to label someone ‘selfish’ instead of admitting that we failed to persuade them or that our demands are unreasonable.

But what if they are really being selfish and you're not just falsely labeling them?

Well then, help them get rid of their insecurity. Show them that they're not going to lose anything by giving you what you want. Or better yet, show them how they may benefit by helping you if there's a possibility of a win-win situation.

It was a protest in San Antonio, Texas. This picture is taken out of context. The company that makes these place 10,000 of them in the city and tourist that use them run red lights and take them on the highway. This was a protest against the company that put them there and it got so bad that the city required them to remove half of them.

Wait, this is in San Antonio, Texas. There was a whole month of news around it. The people doing it are protesting the companies that dump 10,000 of them in an already busy and crowded area. People riding them take them on the highway and run red lights. They also go up to 20 mph and cause many injuries. It got so bad that the city actually required the company that makes them to remove half of them from the city. This was a protest, not people leaving them in the river because they're lazy.

See e.g. Bird Graveyard on Instagram. BUT there's more to this from the other side! There is very angry neighbourhoods where this is a reaction to these big outside companies dumping those scooters nobody asked everywhere. Any car you park gets scratched/dented as they fall over. Paris these days is also littered with these unregulated scooters, it's a plague. They cost so little (need so few rides to repay themselves) that the companies don't care; only when San Francisco started to impound them and charge the companies (Bird, Lime, ... ) they started to take notice.

I’m ok with this. ‘Community” scooters and bikes are NOT for the community. They’re rented, almost always owned by a major corporation, (Citi-bike as in Citibank; Jump is Uber; Lyft has several brands), the rides have no instruction, they’re not indemnified in any way, they’re the sole cause of huge increases in bike/scooter/pedestrian ER visits and they’re often found blocking wheelchair/ADA access. A friend had her car smashed in by a scooter rider bolting out into traffic. Neither were injured, but ZERO car insurance in the US covers this type of auto damage, the rider is absolved from responsibility by their contract with bike/scooter rental company, municipalities that allow them are absolved and the multinational corporations that own them do not insure them. My friend has paid $3000 out of pocket because of a scooter rider. Yes, if you get into an accident with ANY of these community devices, you would have a hell of a time suing the bike/scooter company. These are a menace!

If your city has been plagued by these dumbass dockless scooters, you'll immediately understand why someone did this. They're not "community" scooters, you pay by the minute and they're owned by companies like Uber. They're ruining our sidewalks, hike-and-bike trails, etc. because half the people that use them are drunk a******s who strew them everywhere. They block wheelchair and stroller access. They're an eyesore and a menace. The companies that own them dumped thousands of them into cities with no input from local governments. F**k these scooters. PS. For anyone who wants to f**k with these scooters in a more environmentally friendly way, I heard that blacking out the QR code with a permanent marker does the trick.

because these things are a menace to society. this summer alone, I or my security officers have had to remove around three hundred of these things left on our (private property) sidewalk. People leave them anywhere, Including blocking sidewalks that need to be kept open for handicap access, in the middle of our drive lane, in the middle of the bike lane on the city street. In the middle of the street. These things need to either be made docked or made to go away.

It's in Paris and it's not "community" electric scooters. It's freeloading scooters, often found on the sidewalk, obstructing pedestrians path. Which means obstructing old people with difficulties to wak path, blind people path, wheelchaired people path, kids path. People have enough of this s**t and throw the scooters away. (I disagree with throwing them where they pollute, we have landfill sites that would be way more appropriate). Some people even tape them up together before putting them in the garbage cans. People just want the societies lending these pieces of s**t to sort out their s**t.

I understand how the person/people who threw the scooters into the water feel, but I don't condone it. Denver has a problem with idiots screaming down sidewalks, cross walks, and crowding to the front of traffic -- then running red lights when things look clear. A couple of months ago, a scooter rider hit a guy on crutches. The guy fell and one of his crutches dropped in the path of oncoming scooters, throwing the riders, who broke bones and one had a concussion. Cities haven't figured out how to regulate motorized scooters and it makes life on sidewalks HELL.

This happens a lot around us, but it’s at least partly in retaliation against the company. People drop these things just anywhere, blocking sidewalks and bike lanes, and the company does nothing, even though they can find out who did it by checking credit card records and the locators on the scooters. But people don’t realize that by throwing the scooters in the canal, they are also polluting it with chemicals from the batteries.

I've seen photos of those stupid rental scooters in trash cans, in ponds/canals, and piled-up in impound yards. The scooters being tossed in the canal isn't the selfish, rude behavior. Rather, folks who rented them left them scattered around on sidewalks where they trip pedestrians and bicyclists, wherever they felt like dumping them when their rentals were over. Other folks got annoyed and "disposed" of them in such a way that it would ruin them and hopefully cause the stupid corporations like Bird and Uber to lose money. The best approach is be to coordinate with the city to have them impounded. Tinkerers can buy them for next to nothing from the police impound auctions and get them working like normal scooters by buying cheap replacement consumer-model control boards to replace the locked-down rental control boards. If these companies can't figure out how to clean-up after their customers, they deserve to lose their scooters, one way or another.
