This pair of grade II listed phone boxes make an unusual venue for an art gallery; located in the city of Southampton on the south coast of England they’ve been transformed into a tiny community-run contemporary art space called K6 Gallery.
With only one person being able to squeeze in at a time they bring you up close and personal with the artwork.
Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott the red K6 phone kiosk is an iconic piece of British design. Just as another of his buildings, Bankside Power Station, became the Tate Modern, so these phone boxes have become the K6 Gallery; although these are a more affordable equivalent having been purchased from BT for just £1 each.
The latest exhibition sees 3 photographers; Daniel Cane, Greg Moss and James Newell photograph some of the city’s post-war architecture. Often overlooked, these buildings (selected by writer Owen Hatherley) mark a major point in the region’s modern history and have become some of the city’s better-known landmarks.
