Water Conversation and its Importance

Chand Baori

Centuries earlier water in India was considered sacred as rains were irregular especially in the dry state Rajasthan. For pleasing the rain gods many yagnas and other sacred rituals were performed before the rainy season so that rains could be surplus. Then for conserving the rain water the ruling dynasties applied different approaches like building small water wells, baoris- large water wells with large mouth and steps which helped in collecting the water seeped through porous rocks in the bottom layers of the well. These baoris provided enough water supplies for the residents of the nearby areas for the rest of the year.
One such example of historic baori is Chand Baori located in Abhaneri Village near Jaipur-Agra road, India. This Chand Baori was built by King Chanda of Nikumbha Dynasty in the 8th and 9th century.
The incredible baori’s architecture and detailed craftsmanship in every inch of the baori reflects the true craftsmanship of early medieval Gupta period. This even displays how water was considered precious centuries ago. The Chand Baori has 13 levels with the depth of 20 meters with approximately 3500+ symmetrically designed steps. The details and efforts in the architecture of Chand Baori display’s the significance of water in 8th and 9th century’s. The geometric patterned water well has even attracted tourists and architects from across to the globe to witness this architectural marvel.

Later a stage came water had become more accessible with the discovery of water pumps. These pumps had to be pumped manually for pumping out water which was stored in deep earth’s surface in rainy season. In these days it was routine for every women in a household to travel miles by foot to fetch water from water pumps especially in drought hit areas of Rajasthan, India. Sometimes women even had to follow this routine in extreme weather conditions for their daily water requirements.

Water wastage

With more advancement in modern science and innovation now people are easily able to avail water to through fixed pipelines in their homes. Now people don’t have to travel anywhere to fetch water as water is accessible in every home effortlessly through taps. Currently we are the privileged one’s as we don’t have to go through any hardships for availing water. Is it? Really, are we really appreciating the value of water or utilizing this luxury of availability of water 24×7?

Is every one of us making an effort to fix the leakage from water taps or using methods to recycle or reduce the consumption of water. No!
As we are advancing in terms of technology, life science or innovation in our day to day life we are exhausting our natural resources importantly “Water”. Although the mother earth is covered by 75% water but the salty sea water is unfit for human consumptions. We are in times where groundbreaking scientific research are being made by scientists about having found life on mars, reality behind Big Bang theory and traveling to moon. But why has no scientists ever claimed to create water which is scientifically called H2O by combining simple molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. This scientific miracle of creating water cannot be possible easily without an explosion.

Don’t let this be the future reality of water. According to water conversation organization about 1 billion people are facing water scarcity and 40% demand of fresh water supply has increased. This is the reason why wise men have quoted “Every Drop of Water Makes a Mighty Ocean” as every drop of water saved is counted. Reuse, conserve, stop water pollution and use water carefully for saving water for future human generation, animals and trees as well. As not only we humans but animals, trees and other living organisms even have the equal right on fresh water as even they cannot survive without water.
Don’t make water a thing of the past. Use water wisely!
