After taking a photograph of the Milky Way Galaxy reflecting in my Car, I decided to come back to the same location another night and do a time-lapse instead.

The location was the South Coast of Wellington, New Zealand, not far from Wellington’s city centre. The area is relatively free from light pollution, so the Milky Way can be viewed with the naked eye.

It was a perfectly clear night with not a breath of wind, so I drove out along the off road track to the same location where I had shot my photo a couple of weeks earlier. I had the photo for reference, so tried to get similar framing for the time-lapse. The bright galactic centre of the Milky Way was going to rise above the horizon to the east around 11pm, so at 10.30pm I set my camera up with a exposure of 30 seconds and an interval of 6 seconds, and began to shoot the 400 odd frames over 4 hours for the time-lapse.

During this time, I jumped into the back of the car to get some sleep while the time-lapse was going. I woke up again around 3am to check the finished time-lapse, and was amazed by the images I captured on camera. The Milky Way looked incredible as the reflection moved across my car’s hood and windscreen, with the passing boats and planes also adding to the reflection. It was a relatively cold night that night, and right at the end of the time-lapse, you can even see frost starting to form on the hood of my car.
