New Film Documents Jenny Lewis’ One Day Young Project And Its Journey From London To Malawi
After having two children of her own, established portrait photographer Jenny Lewis decided to start a project that reflects the empowerment of giving birth. Sticking to her strict 24-hour rule she photographed mothers and their babies at their homes in Hackney, London the day they were born.

Lewis wanted to produce a series of images that changed the perception of childbirth from something that produced fear and anxiety to one that would strengthen and inspire women. The project, titled “One Day Young”, ultimately became a book containing an edit of 40 portraits published by Hoxton Mini Press.
In 2015 Lewis was invited by WaterAid to take the project to Malawi to look at the challenges mothers there faced with maternal health, such as the health centres not having any water.“I don’t think that’s the end of the journey for One Day Young. I don’t know what is next, but I’m sure there’ll be another moment to explore.”- Jenny Lewis.
