I probably hadn’t thought about model trains in over ten years until my boyfriend, Garland, came along. Model trains are his hobby and as our relationship progressed, so did my knowledge of them. As a way to bond we decided to make a layout together, and I got to decide on the design. It was a way to incorporate different interests of ours. We decided to make a little n-scale fairy themed layout. As a child I loved fairies so it was just like being a kid again. While we were making it I couldn’t help thinking about how much I would have loved this as a little girl.
“It’s the only one of its kind that I’ve ever seen,” Garland said. He and I had a great time making this cute layout with sparkly flowers, and bright red mushrooms. Many hours were spent out in the hot garage as it slowly came together. I loved adding all the little details in, especially the miniature ladybugs scattered around the layout.
The layout received a lot of attention at the train show we took it to, and we hope to bring it to more. I learned that there was a lot more to model railroading than I ever thought!

The hunt for the perfect accessories was part of the fun.
Each train car was filled with a different “fairy” item – flowers, gems, and pinecones.
Many hours were spent out in the hot garage as it slowly came together.
We even created a little garden for the fairies.
We hope other people will see the layout and it will inspire them to go create something new.
